Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

I had no idea who Tomas Garrique Masaryk was. Our tour guide may have mentioned his significance, but I did not remember, and only when going through the pictures I had taken did I research him and ultimately learned a lot, so I guess the statue earned its worth right there. If you are visiting Prague Castle, you almost can't miss the statue, so I guess you should do what I did and enhance your knowledge of Czech history.

This monument stands in tribute to Tomas Garrique Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia following the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire following World War One.
This monument is a bronze sculpture of Masaryk dressed in a suit standing straight up with a rather stern face. The sculpture stands in a plinth with a plaque that does not refer to Masaryk by name, only his initials of TGM. Odd, but that’s what it shows. The statue stands opposite the Matthais Gate with sculptures of wrestling Titans. Aesthetically, the monument is okay. I wouldn’t go out of the way to see it though unless he is a hero to you, or you happen to be visiting Prague Castle.

Tomas Garrique Masaryk was the much beloved first president of the newly formed Czechoslovakia in 1918. He married an american wife and took her last name for his middle name. He was a three term president and died not long before the start of World War II.
Admired and loved by many, he governed over a very prosperous country. People of that generation loved to remember the good times and prosperity before the war, the good times of living in the "First Republic".
He died in 1937 two years after he left the office.
The imposing bronze statue on Hradcanske square, directly across from the Castle's gate, was unveiled on the 150 year anniversary of his birth. There are always flowers there, and a group of accomplished musicians performs there.
I always stop and reflect on the history and listen to the Castle band playing old czech songs of my youth.

My husband and I spend considerable amount of time in the Hradcany area in July.
We strolled around in no hurry, taking in the much familiar views.
The statue of Tomas Garrique is one of them.
During this visit, I was also hoping to see and hear the band, that provided traditional entertainment always from the same spot, at the foot of the statue.
They played old Czech songs. A nice performance...
Sadly, they were not there. I hope they return...

On our last trip to Prague I was surprised to see a row of wooden structures on the street just below the presiden'ts statue.
There used to be a small band playing old Czech song at different times and I was always happy to see them perform there.
This time the new ugly brown wooden structures - stores perhaps, selling cheap stuff, souvenirs. Next to the president's statue ! Really?
What a pity! It considerably cheapens the beautiful spot ...

Ironically, on the steps overlooking the Matthias Gate is a monument to Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the founder of the Czechoslovakia republic after the abolishment of monarchy in the Austrian-Hungary empire. A symbol of democracy steps away from the symbol of an empire. I wonder if the monument has been placed exactly on the spot looking on the Castle for a reason.
Before you head in the Castle, take a moment on the square and enjoy the view overlooking the city. This is one of the many beautiful vantage points in the Hradčany District but can be the most busy during peak summer months. I was lucky enough to arrived in the evening when the space is far quieter.

The statue stands tall in the castle district looking down upon the city of Prague. Apart from a very revered and loved man, he also was reputed to be a great administrator.
The statue is well maintained. Great photo opportunity and also offers a phenomenal view of the city below.

We stumble upon this statue of one of the Czech Republic's President. The statue is beautiful and stands tall in the middle of the square. Nice place to relax away from the city buzz.

Referred to simply as TGM on the plaque, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was the first President of Czechoslovakia after its forming post WW1.
Unless he's of some relevance to you, I wouldn't go out of your way to see this statue but you may well passit if you visit Prague Castle anyway.

This is a big statue in a cool square outside the castle. The guide said it was the first president of the country. It’s interesting. Not worth going out of the way for but it’s right by the castle.
