Loved, loved, loved

I took my 17 year old to see his first Opera, La Traviata. He was completely blown away by the experience. Both the beautiful location and the opera. He can't wait to go again.

Romeo and Juliet
Apr 2019 • Couples
We saw an Opera in Karlin Musical Theatre. It was a weekday and the theatre did not have any rush. The advantage was we got upgraded to better seats. It was the first time that we saw the Opera. It was captivating, but somewhat long for us. There were subtitles available in English. A nice experience, especially for those who have never seen one.

A great family night out in a beautiful setting.
Oct 2018 • Family
We booked out tickets online the day before to watch Romeo and Juliet as an opera. The opera was in French but there were subtitles in English and Czech above the stage, so no problems in understanding it. The story is well known of course.
The building is stunning with a mix of modern reception and bar arears and the classical opera interior. Prices were very reasonable considering you are watching live opera in a European capital city.
It's easy to get to, only a five minute drive from the old town. No problem getting a taxi back to our hotel.
The quality of the performance was very good. Both the singing and the acting enthralled us. The set was unique and set the story in the 1950's. This gave an interesting take on the story and added to the experience.

In summary we had a lovely family night out, enjoyed the beautiful story which was well presented both artistically and musically.

Fabulous Opera: Hansel and Gretel
May 2018 • Family
We had a wonderful time at the Hansel and Gretel Opera. It was beautifully done. I think it only occurs a couple of times a month. The actors did a fantastic job. We got our tickets a few weeks in advance. The operatic performance was great! Our family felt it was well worth it. The location is a comfortable walk from Old town (the theatre is in Karlin).

Pretty Weird and Very Expensive
May 2018
Not worth the money - this is basically an average musical theatre. It was not even a third full and tickets are very expensive; for the money there is much better live music and art across the city elsewhere.

Buy the tickets and go

The quality of shows in Prague is just fantastic. We caught an opera here. My kids were not thrilled at the prospect and once they entered this ornate theater they were in awe. They loved the opera and talked about it the rest of the trip. Make sure you dress up. This is not a casual experience. The locals take theater seriously and dress accordingly. Stockings are a must. I tore mine and went without and got a few hard looks. The coat check is shockingly efficient. I would rank the National Theater just above this one if you only have time for one.

Expected much more
Feb 2018 • Family
This theater is located quite far from the center, in the area with active construction and highways. We tried to walk here from the center but it is close to 40 mins walk, and we had to walk under highways, railways and in dimly lit suburban quarters. When we arrived we got the news that the play we expected to see was changed for Rusalka. We decided to try it, some voices were Ok (Rusalka and the Witch), and some scenic ideas like film projection as part of the decoration was interesting, and ballet scenes were Ok. However overall it felt mediocre, due to weak lead cast (the stout prince and princess), so-so music and too intensive usage of the black hole in the floor as a way for the characters to disappear from the stage (used probably 10 times). The opera hall is nice, but the rest of the theater is very plain, and there was nothing to see or do during the (two) breaks.

Hansel und Gretel
Dec 2017 • Couples
A wonderful night at the theatre. I had ordered my tickets a month in advance and had them shipped to me in the US and there was a mix-up getting them to me. After checking with the box office they informed me it would be no problem and to check in at the box office. They were very pleasant to work with and quickly printed my tickets off on site. The staff even helped us get to our seats. We loved Hansel und Gretel and the time flew by before the show came to an end. What a fantastic way to spend an evening! I would absolutely return again.

The Barber of Seville

Fantastic performance and setting. We were seated in row 9 and had a fantastic view. Started going to Operas and Ballets on our trips to Prague and have enjoyed them all

I saw The Barber of Seville here in September, I'd never been to an opera before but it so good. Beautiful theatre, comfy seats, I sat in row 9 seat 29, a cheaper seat but the view was perfectly fine
