The theater is surprisingly huge and beautiful. It's not as incredible as the National theatre but still very impressive. The theater is obvisouly taken care of and so are the plays. The actors are one of the best and most famous actors/singers in Czechia and they are all very talented in both acting and singing. The choreographies are all really good as well. The scenes are thought of and beautiful to look at - it was a shame we didn't sit closer to the stage to see everything in its detail. Music for the musicals is live and of a great quality - you can watch the orchestra play if you sit on the highest balcony. The seats are also very comfortable and have a great view but a couple of seats on the highest balcony (I don't know about the lower one), the ones in the first row on the sides of the balcony have a high railing in front of the seats and it gets in the view. The rest of the theater is less formal. There are two bars (we haven't tried them though) and you can buy cheap beautiful programme books and other memorabilia here. The halls are quite narrow for this amount of people though and there are lots of stairs. The foyer gets really crowded and you have to wait in a line to enter the theater, then again to get to the cloackroom - which is obligatory as it is the rule of the theatre to not bring any layers into the auditorium. Another long queue awaits if you decide to go to the bathrooms - the staff adviced us to use the toilets on another floor but the ones we found on our floor had no lightning and there were no switches to turn it on. Other than that it's an incredible theatre and the musicals are sold out. Tourists can go see a play here as well because the musicals are subtitled.

We heard Dvorák's opera "Rusalka" in this theatre while the State Opera was under refurbishment.
Beautiful theatre with modern hall, lift, bar etc.

I have always wanted to see an opera, so when I knew that I would be travelling to Prague, a city which is famed for its classical performances at considerably less cost than at home in London, I went online to see what was available. There were several operas showing during my stay, but I chose Rigoletto at the Karlin Theatre as it was just a short walk from where I was staying.

I admit I was a little reticent about going on my own in a strange city and unsure as to what I should wear. In the end I chose a pair of black velvet trousers with a cream sleeveless blouse and black high heeled sandals, which were not out of place at all. While there were some who came dressed in jeans and T shirts, others dressed far more elaborately than I.

The theatre is very easy to find, just five minutes walk from Florenc metro, and when inside every bit as glorious as I anticipated. The seats are arranged in a horseshoe shape both upstairs and down. I was lucky enough to be seated in the third row downstairs, almost right in front of the orchestra pit. While I could have had a much cheaper seat, I am glad I didn't, as to see an opera such as this for the first time, with such a good seat and good view definitely added to the experience. Now that I have seen one, I am hooked and this will definitely form part of my repertoire when travelling to other Eastern European cities in the future.

Oh why, oh why did we tear these lovely venues down in America??? You can't go wrong at this theater, every seat is a good one. The acoustics are so good. Prague cultural scene is not to be missed. You can see something every night and we tried.

We saw an Opera in Karlin Musical Theatre. It was a weekday and the theatre did not have any rush. The advantage was we got upgraded to better seats. It was the first time that we saw the Opera. It was captivating, but somewhat long for us. There were subtitles available in English. A nice experience, especially for those who have never seen one.

We booked out tickets online the day before to watch Romeo and Juliet as an opera. The opera was in French but there were subtitles in English and Czech above the stage, so no problems in understanding it. The story is well known of course.
The building is stunning with a mix of modern reception and bar arears and the classical opera interior. Prices were very reasonable considering you are watching live opera in a European capital city.
It's easy to get to, only a five minute drive from the old town. No problem getting a taxi back to our hotel.
The quality of the performance was very good. Both the singing and the acting enthralled us. The set was unique and set the story in the 1950's. This gave an interesting take on the story and added to the experience.

In summary we had a lovely family night out, enjoyed the beautiful story which was well presented both artistically and musically.

The quality of shows in Prague is just fantastic. We caught an opera here. My kids were not thrilled at the prospect and once they entered this ornate theater they were in awe. They loved the opera and talked about it the rest of the trip. Make sure you dress up. This is not a casual experience. The locals take theater seriously and dress accordingly. Stockings are a must. I tore mine and went without and got a few hard looks. The coat check is shockingly efficient. I would rank the National Theater just above this one if you only have time for one.

This theater is located quite far from the center, in the area with active construction and highways. We tried to walk here from the center but it is close to 40 mins walk, and we had to walk under highways, railways and in dimly lit suburban quarters. When we arrived we got the news that the play we expected to see was changed for Rusalka. We decided to try it, some voices were Ok (Rusalka and the Witch), and some scenic ideas like film projection as part of the decoration was interesting, and ballet scenes were Ok. However overall it felt mediocre, due to weak lead cast (the stout prince and princess), so-so music and too intensive usage of the black hole in the floor as a way for the characters to disappear from the stage (used probably 10 times). The opera hall is nice, but the rest of the theater is very plain, and there was nothing to see or do during the (two) breaks.

Beautiful building to stage the opera (Rusalka by Dvorak). It's the second largest theatre in Prague and as we were staying in Karlin, and as this opera looked the most interesting thing on while we were in Prague, we got tickets for it. The performance was excellent. Worth noting, coats have to be given to the cloakroom so allow a bit of time at the end to collect them.

One of the most beautiful theatres in Prague. Very nice renewed after Florida in 2002. Very spacious, comfortable, clean a modern. Great for musicals or operetta.
