The area
Neighborhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

I've been travelling to Prague for close to 30 years and if there's one pub I know I'm going to visit on any holiday I take to this beautiful Bohemian city it's U Zlateho Tygra ,the most authentic pub in the Old Town.
I love the look of this pub ,the interior is as traditional as it gets ,curved walls ,a small serving bar, minimalist decor and furnishings ,photos adorn the walls and there's quite a few seating options, mostly bench seating ,if you want to be seated while drinking here get here at 3pm when the pub opens as this pub is normally full by 1 minute past 3pm such is it's popularity ,it's just a great pub.
My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Thursday night, pub was as expected packed,no need to check the beer range as they only serve beers from Pilsner Urquell Brewery ,amazingly a group were leaving the pub as we entered so we were squeezed onto a table were two pints landed on our table ,these beers were served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling and with the distinctive foamy head so characteristic of the way Czech beer is poured and served ,we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great pub we were in.
Make no mistake this pub is one of the most famous pubs in Prague ,frequented by many famous people over the many years it's been open none more so than U.S President Bill Clinton,it's an institution in Prague.
My beer was really good,a light, hoppy and unpretentious lager style beer ,so tasty ,so refreshing and very easy to drink ,it's one of the best lager style beers I've ever tasted .
We really enjoyed our beers in here and the great vibe so much so that we ended up staying for another beer each before we moved and as on every other visit to U Zlateho Tygra we had a great drinking experience .
U Zlateho Tygra is easy to locate along Husova ,a street and area teeming with pubs, bars and restaurants and some amazing architecture and a major tourist destination.
Opening hours are;
Monday to Sunday,3pm till 11pm.
A great beer destination ,a pub I highly recommend you check out if you're in the Old Town.

Several locals told us we had to visit here to experience a classic beer hall with the freshest beer. Well the locals did not stear us wrong. Be sure to arrive at opening time in order to get a table which will likely shared with a local. Sit down and expect a fresh pilsner will be served shortly along with your beer marker paper. The place reeks of history all the way from the stuff on the wall to the men in control of the beer service. Be prepared that as soon as you finish your first beer a second will arrive without asking. This was quite an experience to say the least!

Since I´m living about 300 metres from this pub and I visit it regulary (usualy every 2nd day) I felt to be useful to give away some information which would be usuful for a tourists (especialy first time visitors)

1) Don´t go there if u have kids, dogs or any other animals traveling with you
2) Don´t go there if you are planning to order something alse than a pint of beer (even 0.3l)
3) Don´t go there after 6 o'clock - there is no place to sit (it opens at 3)
4) Don´t go there if you don´t like smoke (a lot of) in a restaurant

If you positively passed all 4 you may procced:

1) always say "Hello" or better "Dobry den" after entering the pub
2) ask the waiter for a place to sit
3) always follow waiters orders in regard a place to sit
4) don´t order a beer. It has been already ordered - this is also a case of ordering 2nd, 3rd etc.
5) If you want to order a meal, order it by the man with a white shirt (not with a green one)

If you follow these basic rules, you should be OK and have a chance to taste one of the best tapped beers in the world and enjoy to atmosphere of a real local pub in Prague. For a meal I would recommend a beer cheese "pivni syr" which you have to mix together with other ingrediences given and put it on the bread.

So I walk in with my girlfriend - we had been recommended this place by a friend, and it's packed! There is a curtain as we walk in and people standing there drinking. All the tables seem full, so I walk to the bar to check if we can still get a beer, but the bartender looks at me, then at the punters drinking by the curtain and starts to laugh, so do they, he then throws a tea towel over his head and turns towards me, making the punters laugh even more. Bemused, I say, "what's so funny?" but again I'm ignored by all who are laughing, and I'm then shoved out the way by a barman returning a tray to the bar. That's fine, he's working and it's busy and I'm in his way, so I walk to the side where the punters are still laughing at me, so again I say "what's so funny?" Again I'm ignored, the bartender finally looks at me so walk over and say, "can we get a beer? He replies "we're full, no reservations" I say ok, we leave feeling absolutely humiliated, horrible experience, will never go there again.

We had a table for 2, and directly got a beer. So far everything was good.
But suddenly they came and told us we had to leave in 10mns because the table was reserved...
So we had to pay, and we paid more than others.
Our friends paid 200CZK for 5 beers and we paid 100 for 2...
Expensive to speak English only!

I've visited U Zlatého tygra a few times over the last couple of years. The first time I was absolutely bowled over by the quality of the Pilsner Urquell beer which is served here unpasteurised using using the superior tank system. This preserves more of the complex flavours and makes for an altogether more satisfying drink. Return visits have confirmed that the beer here is in a class of it's own.

Better yet the prices are a bargain for this part of town and you will not find a pub with faster service.

Again I must stress the beer here is quite unlike anything you will taste anywhere else in the world. Even the same beer served directly at source at the Pilsner Urquell brewery in Plzeň tastes inferior to what they they turn out at U Zlatého tygra. How do they do that? This place is to beer what Vivoli in Florence is to ice cream.

OK on the down side, it can be smoky but I have never found it unfriendly. Just treat the locals with respect and don't insult the staff by ordering anything other than the beer. That's the reason for coming here after all.

I am 54 and I can categorically say this is the best beer I have ever drunk. I went alone and after standing by the bar for five minutes the barman looked at me - after establishing he couldn't speak english I ordered a beer. After five or six I spoke to a local who said it was the best beer in Prague. I left a 100 crown note for the barman and waiter for a drink and the non-english speaking barman said "thank you sir!". Ah well, you can understand them being annoyed by tourists - during the hour or so I was there two obvious tourist types came in, took a photo of the picture on the wall when Bill Clinton visited and left, no beer, no acknowledgement to the staff, nothing. Are they [--] off with tourists ? too right. It's their pub so treat it and the locals with due respect and you will reap the rewards. Best pub I've ever been in ? not far off. Best beer? absolutely without question.

I think we did everything right and were ok, but you really should not have to jump through hoops, follow guidelines or fit a criteria to stop someone taking delight in being rude to you, and they are rude to people coming in, and you can tell they enjoy it. We have driven 4000 miles through Europe and many countries, drinking in cities and small towns, sharing tables with people we cannot speak to and been met with good manners and smiles, this is one of the worst pubs I have ever been in any country in my life.

I got my pint quickly, But regretted I had to stay there long enough to drink it.

I'd rather eat glass than go there again.

For this restaurant/bar/beer hall you have to have an open mind. It is very very Czech! So if you don't enjoy a loud and full energy atmosphere then I wouldn't recommend it.

We were a little nervous having read the reviews but this place gave us the best evening we had in Prague.

The waiters do not speak much English and so you can understand why some reviews describe them as rude.

It is great to experience the culture fully. We were recommended by a Czech local and it did not disappoint.

We ate the pork in cheese sauce and a Wiener schnitzel. Both were incredible and the cheese sauce was to die for! Again the food is very Czech.

Sharing the table was great as well. We met a Hungarian son and mother, who I'm still in contact with about our travels.

Great beer, great food, great company and an overall incredible experience.

We had 4 beers and 2 meals plus tip for 700CZK.

U zlatého tygra - Braved the wikitravel warnings of "mean-looking Czechs that look like they would rather shake you than share a table" for the Pilsen 12° - to say Na zdravi where Václav Havel (he would know his Pilsner, having worked in a brewery after the Prague Spring) introduced Bill Clinton to Bohumil Hrabal at the latter's favourite watering hole. (Note to self - Extend familiarity with Czech authors beyond Kafka.)

We sat and before we could fumble translating our order - two large mugs of Plzeňský Prazdroj 12° beer were brought... when they were three fourth done - two more were brought... in a couple of hours, we were desperately looking for the bohemian words for "please stop, we've drunk enough" - but apparently they don't exist - it's just called sunrise.

A tip the others have omitted in the justified praise of the beer - once you get around to interacting with the staff, do get some grub (my recommendation is the gastronomically delightful combination with Spicy meat mix - PIKANTNÍ MASOVÁ SMĚS (ROŠTĚNEC, KARÉ) on the Czech menu).
