The area

Neighborhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

Our family visited the National Gallery Prague - Convent of St. Agnes. The entrance cost is 250 CZK for adult, and 140 CZK for student. There is a combo tickets that cover all National Galleries for 7 days at 680 CZK, but we don’t think that is worthwhile.
The museum itself has a limited collection, and without noteworthy art and/or sculpture. The museum also does not offer good audio tour option. We found that the museum is of limited interest. There is a attached convent that is on exhibit which is free of charge. It has some interesting play and may be entertaining for a hot day.

While sailing on the Vltava in the evening, I was made curious by a beautifully illuminated monastery complex on the right bank of the river... the St. Agnes Monastery. Founded in 1231 by Princess Agnes of Bohemia (1211-1282), daughter of King Ottokar I of Bohemia. As a sought-after marriage partner, she was engaged to various European princes at an early age, but none of the intended marriages came to fruition. Agnes withdrew from the marriage market and chose a religious life. For all her religious good works she was canonized, albeit only in 1989 (!). The Poor Clare Monastery, which she founded and named after her, in which she is also buried, is a beautiful example of the architectural style of the early Bohemian Gothic in terms of architectural style, especially visible in the monastery chapel. The monastery was abandoned around 1780 and fell into disrepair. In 1963, the complex became the property of the National Gallery Prague, which, after extensive restoration, established a museum of medieval art, mainly 14th, 15th and 16th century religious sculpture and painting. The major restoration in the 1960s means that the monastery complex is unfortunately no longer very interesting for architecture enthusiasts. Old and new building parts are difficult to distinguish and place in time. The very complicated floor plans do not help. But, let's be honest, the monastery chapel with its sloping roof with dormer windows is very beautiful!! The museum collection is fantastic and completely makes up for the disappointment with the monastery complex. What a wonderful collection of medieval religious art this is!! So definitely worth a visit.

We had some time to spend before an organized tour and decided to see the Convent of St.Agnes and found it to be a worthwhile stop just to see the beauty of this restored convent. The building and garden is peaceful and you can feel the history of the convent. The internal rooms of the convent is beautifully restored with minimum items to see. The building/rooms are the focal point to walk thru.

The Monastery of St. Agnes of the Czech Republic includes medieval art from Bohemia and central Europe. It is in fact one of the buildings besides the Schwarzenberg Palace, the Salmo Palace, the Sternburk Palace, the Exhibition Palace, the Kinski Palace, the Waldstein Manege, housing the National Gallery of Prague, a public organization that manages the largest collections of fine and applied arts in the Czech Republic. Each of the buildings is dedicated to different art forms, eras, and even countries.
I can no longer remember if there is a common ticket to visit all these sites, but in any case, I am afraid that such visits will take a lot of time, although they are worth it.
The majestic medieval monastery, laid out by Anezka Przemyslavna and her brother King Wenceslaus I in 1231-1234 on the site of the old hospital, is located in the north-eastern part of Prague's Stare Mesto historical district. The convent complex includes the convent church of St. Francis, the building of the Minority Convention, the square cloiter, the large convent wing, the convent kitchen, the building of the women's church, the chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, the church of the Holy Savior, the chapel of St. Barbara, the convent walls and the house of the abbess.
The architecture of the complex is Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance.
During our time, it was strangely quiet (except for one annoying and unpleasant-smelling tourist who bound up with me and went from exhibit to exhibit).. it was possible to move freely from one hall to another, looking at everything and taking pictures, only without flashing - as in many other museums, galleries.
This place is undoubtedly one of the best for a close look at the art and visual history of the Middle Ages in Europe.

Very pleasant welcome at the cloakroom and ticket office

I walk towards two people responsible for checking tickets
Immediately the man starts barking. I understand that I upset him but why? I show my bag, my jacket, my bottle. He barks more and more, as if howling could teach a language...
A slightly older lady intervenes, gentleness and kindness personified: you must tie your jacket around your waist and carry your bag at arm's length. Either.

The room supervisors are like their male colleagues: they don't say hello to every visitor, okay, even if there isn't a crowd. That they don't even respond to a greeting, it's incorrect and unprofessional

The collection is certainly immense and beautifully displayed. But it's really too repetitive. At the end of the 50th Virgo, we saturate.
I expected, in addition to paintings and sculptures, pieces of goldwork, reliquaries, priestly vestments, etc. Nothing of that.

Excellent medieval art collection. The deconsecrated cloisters are somehow disappointing, utterly empty and our of context. Some of the exhibit staff is very rude. They rudely scolded me just for explaining the work of art to my kids.

A little quiet in this big city feels good. A garden with a shaded and pleasant park. The convent is free and exhibitions are paid for. It is not a must but if you have time it is to be seen. Count 20 minutes. The dining room is very nice

Beautiful impressive place, with beautiful art and history in every corner. In the garden you will find both ancient statues and modern art. In the monastery itself you get away from all the hustle and bustle of Prague and are simply overwhelmed by the grandeur, tranquility and tombs. Definitely also stop by if you do not wish to go to the exhibitions.

Mostly medieval and religious art. The museum building is impressive itself close to old town in Prague 🇨🇿. Main room has all walls painted in black. Would have appreciated a different choice of background for the paintings, completely black wall behind each painting in the main rooms just took away from the immersive colorful experience that these works have to offer.
