About
This monumental entrance by which the coronation processions of Czech kings entered the Old Town is one of the most significant monuments of Late Gothic Prague. Completed in 1475, the Powder Gate Tower, which formerly served as a gunpowder store, is still the starting point for the Coronation or Royal Route to Prague Castle. The viewing gallery is located at a height of 44 m.

The area
Neighborhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

- RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11,735 contributionsInteresting historyThe most interesting attraction between our hotel and Old Town Square was the Powder Gate. It is one of the original 13 city gates in Old Town, Prague. Its construction began in 1475 but not actually completed until the late 1800s. The tower was intended to be an attractive entrance into the city, instead of a defensive tower. The gate was used to store gunpowder in the 17th century, hence the name Powder Tower or Powder Gate. The gate suffered considerable damage during the Battle of Prague. The sculptures on the tower were replaced in 1876.Visited December 2022Written January 14, 2023
- Travel529New York City, New York279 contributionsPowder GateDecent tower with basic city views. You have to take 100s of steps as there is no lift. If you have been to pisa tower top (Italy) then you will find similar steps here. From top there are decent but no extraordinary views. You have to pay to go to top. If you visit castle then you may consider skipping it.Visited January 2023Written February 24, 2023
- Ginges_revengeBrisbane, Australia4,699 contributionsLovely gothic old tower that still is that starting point for the coronation route into old town Prague to Prague CastleA lovely tower originally used to store Gun Powder hence the name, Powder tower. As in most reviews you'll hear it was begun in 1475 but not finished until late 1800's. The gate has traffic going through it / underneath it and it is very blackened on the outside. A shame as its its built of sandstone. The tower is 65 meters tall and its all stairs to the top of the 44m viewing platform if you decide to climb it. The stairs are a little uneven in some places but its not a hard climb. The pricing is reasonable and if you go in the 1st hour after opening, its half price. A good option, gets the legs and heart pumping 1st up after breakfast. The views are somewhat limited but i still really enjoyed this tower as I thought it was quite beautiful. It is still the starting point for the coronation procession of kings to enter the Old town of Prague to get to Prague castle.Visited February 2023Written March 27, 2023

- Johnny TrekkieSan Diego, California9,263 contributionsBetter from the outsideVery impressive and intimidating looking tower. Reminded me from something from the Lord of the Rings movies. Great photo opportunities, but as for the 190K/$8.25 to go up to the top of the tower...it wasn't worth it the time, effort, and money. While I do love a good European tower with 100s of steps, this interiors of each floor weren't too exciting, and the views from the top weren't all that exciting. If you're limited on time, you can skip going up there, and just admire the architecture from the outside.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten November 21, 2023

The Powder Gate is located in Republic Square, right next to the Municipal House. The entrance to the tower is small, easy to overlook. The ascent is quite challenging, because the stairs are narrow and spiral, but the view from the top of the tower of Prague is beautiful.
Inside there is a small exhibition that describes the history of this tower.
Various inscriptions from tourists are engraved in the stones on the observation deck. The oldest message I found there was from 1927.

The Powder Tower is one of the ancient gates of Prague, and it is now on the boundaries of the old town. It used to be the storage for gunpowder, this is where its name comes from. I had no chance to climb up to its top, but I guess you can see wonderful views of the city from up there. I loved its presence, in the middle of the city, it still looks like a gate both to the old town and to the past.

Powder Gate (Prašná brána) is a wonderful medieval tower and gate. Construction started in 1483, but builders lost interest and the gate was not completed until the late 1800s (that’s some lack of interest!). The 65-meter tower was used as a wharehouse for gunpowder in the 1800s, giving rise to the nickname “Dusty”.

An old tower with beautiful architecture (there is another tower with similar architecture in Prague, the Old Town Bridge Tower). The gate at its base was one of the entry points to the medieval city. The facade is very beautifully decorated. The ascent to the observation platform is quite difficult, on some narrow spiral stairs. But the view makes it worth the effort. The entrance ticket can be paid with the card. When you climb to the observation deck, at an intermediate level, is a small exhibition that gives you details about the history of the tower.
The stone from which it is built has acquired an almost black color over the time, giving the impression that the tower is smoked by a fire.
Right next to it is Obecní dům / Municipal House, a very beautiful building.

We passed this giant gate a couple of time while walking around Prague. It is quite close to the Old Town area and right beside the theatre. It was quite nice to walk beside the tower just to see the details on it. It looks quite nice both during the day and at night. It is one of the many towers that you could pass while walking around the city.

I must have walked by thousands of times in the years past.
Some things never change. It was always a good meeting place, everybody knew how to get there.
With the large influx of tourists, they opened it up to the public . For an entrance fee you can climb the steps to the top.
I must admit I have never climbed the steps here , other towers yes, but not here. Actually I did not even know it was possible.
Climb or not , It is quite a landmark , impossible to miss ...

This is the Czech name for the Powder Gate which is also a 200 foot tower. It was one of 13 gates into the old town. There is an observation deck on the top for tourists to see both the old and new town portion. There is no fee to climb to the observation deck.

No it's on the first level, up a spiral staircase and quite tight for space. Hope this helps.

Hello all,
Thank you for your time to read my questions.
Is it necessary to purchase tickets in advance? Also, where can one purchase tickets? ..is the wait to go to the top a long wait?
Thanks!

Tickets are easily bought at the base of the tower. No worries. Only go up if you have a clear day with great visibility.
