The Old Town Hall is one of the most significant monuments in the Czech Republic. It was established in 1338 as the administrative seat for Prague's Old Town. Now, it is mainly used for the ceremonial purposes of the capital city, Prague. The historical town hall consists of a set of five medieval houses, the corner of which is adorned with a historical astronomical clock, a gothic oriel window and a massive rectangular tower. The lookout gallery on the town hall tower offers the most beautiful view of Prague. A tour of the historical halls in the Old Town Hall is a unique experience. The expensively decorated rooms date from various periods and are examples of the remarkable development of the town hall complex. The guided tours in various languages are organised in half-hourly intervals.

This was one of the main attractions we wanted to visit but we were concerned about the hike up. Fortunately they had lifts all the way up the tower. It was very clean, well organised, and informative. The view of the city is lovely even if it was a little crowded at the top.

By all accounts a mechanical clock of this age is a wonder to behold but the hourly chimes no longer hold the fascination of a 21st century traveller. Great to see if you are in the area but don't lose sleep if you miss the hourly chimes.

A display is put on for the huge swarm of tourists that flock to see the clock in all its glory. The clock dials are supposedly representative of the position of both the moon and sun in the sky at that time. As the clock has working parts older than the USA, it makes for a very intriguing show. The clock is of course one of those must sees but the hourly walk of the apostles might not be worth the wait. Very crowded.

The astronomical clock is beautiful. The old town hall together with the clock make a really nice composition.

The town square is touristic but nice. The astronomical clock, however, does not live up to its hype. At all.

This a marvellous timepiece and worth getting to just before each hour strikes for the mechanical performance. It can be very crowded. You will get the best view in the morning when the clock face/s are lit up by the sun.

Don't blink, you'll miss everything and we were there at 12 noon. Be sure and stand a little ways back - you'll be able to see the figures move better. Fun, but not the Glockenspeil in Munich!

Buzzy area , packed with tourists day and night. Sip wine and cappuccinos in one of the cafes in the square and you will surprised by two or three weddings in the old church nearby. Try eat local fare ie goulash and dumplings and will check weight after the holidays

This is obviously one of the jewels in Prague's tourist crown. It's quite nice, the view is spectacular, but my goodness are there a lot of tourists.

Staying in Stare Mesto (Old Town)

Neighborhood Profile
Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.
