About
The Cimrman Theater celebrates its 50th season in 2016. Now you have the unique opportunity to experience his work in English. Many Czechs consider his plays untranslatable but our productions prove all the nay sayers wrong. Despite the fact that Jára Cimrman is a fictitious character, in 2005 a majority of Czechs named him the Greatest Czech in a nation-wide poll. Our performances take place in the Cimrman Theater with the original set and costumes. The cast is composed exclusively of professional, native-English speaking actors. Like Monty Python is for English-speakers, any Czech can quote Jára Cirman, so learn some of his catch phrases too!

I’ve now seen Cimrman plays in both Czech and English and I was having great time regardless to the language. Recommended for English tourists in Prague and for whoever likes Jára Cimrman. To people with average English I advise seeing the same play in Czech first.

I have been twice to this theatre and thoroughly enjoyed both visits. The 4 plays so far translated into English 'by Cimrman' are all very funny, although I recommend 'The Stand In' & 'Conquest of the North Pole' as the best.
To fully appreciate the humour I'd suggest finding out about one of the most famous Czechs ever 'Jára Cimrman' in Wikipedia before going, to really appreciate the layers of Czech humour in the plays.
There is a nice little bar at the venue & the venue itself is very quaint. Tip- it can be a bit warm in the auditorium so wear layers.
Can't wait to go again and will be very sad when I have seen all the English translations.

The company has done a great job translating famous Czech plays of Divadlo Járy Cimrmana. It works surprisingly well in English. And the actors are fantastic. Great job. Great fun. Must see when you visit Prague.

I'm a Czech and know the original almost by heart, so I was curious how the translation works. It was great!!! They've found an adequate equivalent for almost every joke, both the script and the actors were excellent. I went to see The Act and would love to see some of the other plays as well.

Foreigners should be aware of one thing. By seeing a show by Cimrman English Theatre they take the exam from being Czech, and by enjoying it they become Czech. Or, at least, as Czech as possible. Specific Cimrman humour is very simple, bitter-sweet, touching, childish yet clever. Phrases from Cimrman plays go with many of us - Czechs - for whole our lives, they keep us relaxed in all possible situations (or even eras - like during socialism). Generally, we have never thought Cimrman jokes are transferable to other languages. What a great surprise it works.

It's truly remarkable what these guys are doing. Cimrman is the quintessential Czech comedy, a really interesting phenomenon. And it has long been considered "untranslatable", due to how intrinsically Czech it is. "It would make no sense in English!", my Czech friends would say! "How would you translate the puns?"
Well, they are translating it, and it works! Ive seen 2 plays: The Stand-in and The Conquest of the North Pole. Both were awesome!! Half the theater was expats like myself, the other half skeptical Czechs curious to see how these foreigners were desecrating their holiest character. And by the end we were all united in our standing ovation!
Thanks guys for helping me understand this country I now call home a bit better!!

Pub in the Glade. Completely stupid, completely barking mad, brilliantly acted and so much the better for it. Totally unexpected. Very enjoyable. Tickets already purchased for next month’s The Act. Top.

My husband and I were recommended to see this show, and we were blown away! It was absolutely hilarious - I haven't laughed that much in a long time. Not only are you going to enjoy this show, but you will also experience and learn about Czech culture.

Hi there, I'm in Prague from 19 to 24 Aug, 2018 and would love to take in a Cimrman English Theatre play. However, I cannot seem to find any performance dates for the period. Will you be staging any plays then? If yes, where can I get tickets? Thanks.

Hi Jotanyp,
Zael is right, the theatre takes a break during the summer, it is common among Czech theatres. Our first performace in the next season will be 14th September 2018. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter to be up to date with our events.
If you'd like to see some theatre in English during your stay, I can recommend Measure for measure by Shakespeare at Prague Castle. It will be performed in the open air 22nd August 2018. You can get your tickets on GoOut.
Hopefully see you next time.
Best regards,
Vendula
