Prague – In just 2 - 3 days:
What to see – What to do – What to avoid

Prague is the home of “The Infant of Prague”, Franz Kafka, The birth of Art Nouveau (Mucha: Pronounce Mookhaar) after the artist Alphonse Mucha, Stunning Bohemian glass and really good beers
.
Choose a hotel in Mala Strana near to the river or quiet cul de sacs near the Charles Bridge (“Lesser Town”) – Praha 1 district its quiet and this area is the real Prague. Avoid hotels in the centre of the Old Town and Wenceslas Sq – these areas are busy and crowded.

Eating / Drinking out as above – in Mala Strana are the real Czech restaurants and Cafes where the locals eat and drink for 150 - 180 cK will get you a hearty 2 course meal complete with a beer (that’s about £5 - £6) …. That’s really good value and proper Czech food – Try Goulash and dumplings or Stroganoff with rice and duck dishes are plentiful ……. Avoid the famous pork knuckle (knee) a. its way too big, b. its way too salty and c. its impossible to dissect. Cheaper still are the many Chinese restaurants throughout Prague – dishes average around 80 cK (£2.50) to eat in! Best places to eat there are many just try the Mala Stranska Sq and Nerudova for the real thing. Avoid those restaurants that have menu touts ora sales person trying to persuade you to come in with offers and deals.
.
A must also is to try the local cylindrical dough pastry snack rolled in walnut called Trdelnik from a bakery or Trdelnik stand. Try this with coffee for an afternoon snack - delicious

All the thousands of tourists / day trippers navigate to 4 main places:- The Charles Bridge (heaving under the hordes), The Old Town Square with its Astronomical Clock (9am – 9pm), Prague Castle and the pedestrian only shopping route with its many glass and souvenir shops winding its way along from Karlova > Old Town Sq > Celetna > Orocny trh > Na Prikope to Wenceslas Sq with its 5 story Bata shoe store. There are also some 40 museums covering as many different subjects but all charge at least £5 entrance
.
Whilst the discerning visitor will wish to incorporate the above sights, to lighten the effect of swimming against the tide of thousands of tourists then walk across the Charles Bridge early – after breakfast and before 10am when it is relatively quiet and before the day trippers arrive or savour late at night on the way back the hotel. The Karlova Street is always teeming and busy and there is no answer to avoiding the crowds leading up to the hourly Astronomical Clock display (hang on to your bags).

Tips on how to really enjoy Prague: Wonder off the main trails by just a few seconds and the rewards are rich indeed. In Mala Strana meander onto Kampa Island for the Na Kampe and the quiet promenade gardens with their panoramic views, sculptures and atmospheric quaint side streets with beautiful old buildings and the tucked away colourful John Lennon Wall with its poetic and philosophical graffiti. Two minutes from the Charles Bridge and close to Franz Kafka’s house in Cihelna Steet (you may be its only visitor as it’s not on many an itinerary), shop and museum you will find “hidden” a tranquil public garden - Vojanovy Sady with its peacocks and fruit trees
.
The Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral are best visited first thing – go straight after an early breakfast before the coach party rush hour arrives. The walk is steep any way but relatively short if you take the tucked away Zamecke schody (steps) and don’t use the Nerudova route that 99% of people seem to do. A Prague Castle combined ticket costs around 450 cK. But to be honest you can see most of it for free by wandering around the lanes and courtyards and St. Vitus Cathedral has free admittance enough for you to see. From the castle stroll to the Loreto Convent and peaceful Strahov Monastery to relax. From the Strahov Monastery you will discover a fantastic and stunning panoramic view over Prague and walk back down via Uvoz and Nerudova.

Must See in Prague are three Churches: Our Lady of Victories in Karmelitska which is home to the world famous shrine of the Infant of Prague and is open free all day. You will find an interesting museum here, shop and Sacristy. Mass is celebrated at 9am and 6pm on weekdays with Mass at different times on Sundays in different languages. The Old Town twin spire Church of Our Lady before the Tyn with is stunning Baroque Interior. Mass is celebrated at around 12 noon. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows at Jungmannovo náměstí with it peaceful Franciscan gardens.
There are also many parish churches that you will come across but recommended is the San Salvatore opposite the Charles Bridge (Old Town end) …. Where you can drop in and sit quietly away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds outside.

If you have time then take the Funicular up Petrin Hill (for the cost of a tram fare only). On week days its very quiet with no queues especially if you go up late afternoon then stroll back down through the Seminary Gardens or via the Strahov Monastery.

For a feel of artistic Prague then a visit to the Franz Kafka house, museum and shop and the Mucha Museum are well worth it.

Beer: Price ranges from 29 cK – 80 cK (330ml – 1 lit) but basically £1 a drink so its good value for good beer. The 2 famous brands – Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar are popular ….. but try the Prague Staropramen beer and the Krusovice beer as these are cheaper and really good also try the famous dark beer versions which are excellent. When you are visiting the Strahov Monastery go to their own brewery and try their range of three famous St. Norbert’s Beers – Strong Light Beer IPA, Amber Beer and the incredible Dark Beer and during summer their unfiltered stunning Wheat Beer flavoured with cloves.

All in all Prague is simply a perfect destination.

Every minute of every hour of every day, a city to explore. Medieval palaces, a bustling commercial area, or a quiet pub. You won’t find as many architectural monuments, galleries, concerts, nature preserves, or as much entertainment and relaxation in one small space anywhere else on earth.

Prague is all I expected and more. I think I fell in love with this city during the very first day. Medieval architecture, opera, history, red rooftops, narrow cobblestone streets and passageways, castles, fountains, statues, quaint shops, great restaurants, lively pubs, and possibly the friendliest people on the planet. What's not to love?
Don't miss the many sights in and around Old Town Square: the churches, shops, astronmical clock, and medieval architecture are awe-inspiring. Saint Nicholas Church hosts classical music concerts most evenings. The square is a great place to mingle with other tourists as well as locals... they're very friendly. There are more winding paths than you'll ever have time to explore.

The Prague Castle and surrounding village are charming and picturesque. Plan to spend a full day or longer exploring this area. There's an awful lot of eye candy here as well as a lot of history. You can ride the funicular up the hill to the Petrin tower for an awesome view of the city.

This has to be the cleaneast city I've ever experienced. The Charles Bridge is the best way to get between Lesser Town and Old Town. Walking across the bridge is an interesting experience in itself--musicians, artisans and gypsies abound. Both sides of the bridge are lined with interesting statues--each with its own story to tell.

From the other reviews I thought Eva from tours@sightseeing-prague.com would be a good choice. She was responsive and helpful in emails BUT she never showed up. I confirmed about 2 weeks prior, she gave me her phone contact and when I called from our hotel she did not understand?? and didn't seem to recollect any such confirmation. Luckily our hotel helped out for the following day with a wonderful guide (at twice the cost). Be cautious.

We had a great two days with Eva on the Kutna Hora Trip and the One Day in Prague Tour. She had impressive knowledge of the area and interesting insights into growing up before and after the Velvet Revolution. We never felt rushed and in fact, our Prague Tour lasted nearly 9-1/2 hours. Eva easily adapted the tour plans on the fly to our requests. She had initially planned to go to the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle first, but once we said we wanted to see a few David Cerny sculptures, the entire plan changed. A couple other sites that we enjoyed that were not on our original plan were the Dripstone Wall and the paternoster in the New City Hall.

She took time to see more than just the main highlights. For example, on the Kutna Hora Trip, in addition to St Barbara Cathedra;, Ossuary (Bone Church), and silver mine, we saw the Italian Court and took a leisurely walk around the old town. Tip: wear the hard hats on the silver mine tour - they are more than just cosmetic. It was also nice when she talked with the driver in Czech that afterwards she would tell us what they were talking about.

I would like to recommend Ms.Eva Bartuskova for the future Prague visitors. We had very specific demands and they were all met according to our wishes. Ms.Eva is flexible and patient (our bus from Brno was delayed-2hrs almost), she was still waiting for us and adjusted our tour. Ms.Eva has a deep knowledge not only of history, but culture, customs etc., in short you can talk and ask her for everything and she always has an answer. Her tour was interesting not only for the Prague 'newcomers ',but also for me as a Czech person not coming from Prague. Thank you once again and wishing you for the future lots of satisfied customers as we were. Iva, Marc and Nick

We toured Prague with Pavel and really enjoyed every moment. Pavel was professional, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. From warning us to hang onto our bags as we watched the Astronomical clock to gearing our tour to our love of churches to showing us the best place for a beer afterward, Pavel made us feel like he was showing friends his beautiful city. We also ran into Eva at St Vitus and although we had never met, it felt like bumping into an old friend. You will NOT find a better tour company. I just wish we had been there long enough to take advantage of another one or two of the tours!!! Thank you so much, Pavel and Eva!!!

We were in this city for a five day stay at the end of September 2015 and had already booked this four hour tour with Eva before we departed for Prague. She met us at our apartment promptly at 9.30am. She briefly gave us her idea for an itinerary and explained that she would commence at the furthest point which was Prague Castle and work back towards the Old Town Square near to where our apartment was.

Eva was an extremely competent and friendly guide. Her English was excellent and also her knowledge of the city and its history. She also enjoyed answering questions that we put to her and helped us with recommendations for places to visit, eat, public transport and boat trips etc.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with her which we did on our first full day which helped us to acquaint ourselves with this beautiful city.

We would certainly like to recommend her as a guide - excellent value too. Enjoyed our day immensely!

Prior to arriving in Prague, I had an opportunity to communicate with Eva electronically. From here prompt response to my questions and requests, I knew I had a person who would provide an expert tour for our group. There were four couples traveling from the USA and we had scheduled three nights in Prague and were able to arrange two half day tours which worked well and allowed for a bit of jet lag.

Eva was extremely accommodating, professional, knowledgeable, and well educated about her country and it's history. We were memorized with the stories she shared that made the history come alive. We explored both sides of the river and one day visited the Prague Castle and the Castle District and the other day spent time on the Charles Bridge, Old Town, New Town and the Jewish Quarter. We experienced the best of Prague with a well informed and expert guide who taught us what it was like to discover the best of Prague.
