Nearly 700 hundred meters long, Wenceslas Square represents the most frequent and buzzing crossroads of the city. The National Museum in the upper part of the square watches over your spending spree in countless shops and retail stores lining the entire square, which ends at Na Příkopě, the most famous shopping street. When tired or broke, you can explore the city's underpasses, which can take you to the Old Town or to the courtyards of art nouveau houses with secret gems of greenery, white benches and rose bushes that provide unexpected peace in the midst of the city. Be sure to pay a visit to the traditional cafés, classic Czech pubs, cinemas and theaters. National Theater near the river has a lot to offer to foreigners. - Emily S1 contributionBest hidden family experience in Prague! We visited as a family, and it was a fantastic experience with kids. It was so interactive, and we especially loved the VR film and learning how to synchronize sound with a movie. A highlight was the downstair animated Czech films that we got such a kick out of. The workers were extremely attentive and willing to show us the musuem and answer all of our questions. It is tucked away behind a park, with a cute cafe and playground right next door, so it is can be a part of a perfect afternoon for the family in Prague. I highly recommend it!Thank you very much for your kind review and the appreciation of interactive parts of our exhibition and also of our unique surroundings. - CraigSheffield, United Kingdom4 contributionsA great experience for film loversA fantastic museum in which to spend an hour or two while you're in Prague. I hold a PhD in film and found plenty to enjoy and lots I didn't know! The top floor is dedicated to the early history and technology of cinema (magic lanterns, phantasmagoria, projectors, foley, etc.) while the lower floor is dedicated to more culturally specific subjects – at the time of our visit, there were exhibits on Czech avantgarde and animation. A highlight of my trip was watching a selection of Czech animated shorts in one of the screening rooms (none of which I had seen before). A trip here pairs really well with a visit to the Karel Zeman Museum, which isn't too far away – very easy to do both in a day. There is also an extra VR experience that we didn't pay extra for, not because we weren't interested but because both my partner and myself are horrendously short sighted and VR tends not to work very well! Highly recommended. We're really glad that the exposition worked so well in combination with your PhD degree :) Film history is full of surprises that we are still discovering and transforming into new ideas. We were pleased to see that you appreciated the animated films you chose, which we find essential, but which are not very well known in the Czech Republic either. Thank you very much for your nice review and I send my regards on behalf of the whole NaFilM team.Written May 16, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2024

The staff were absolutely brilliant: engaged, and engaging, and had great English. They really make this museum what it is. We saw the optional extra VR film Darkening, which was like nothing I'd ever experienced. Beautiful and moving. Wonderful.Thank you very much for appreciating the concept of our exhibition and the work of our staff. We are also very happy that the VR film had such a strong effect on you. - Filip H1 contributionA truly interactive museumA really fun and interactive little museum. I went with 2 boys (9 and 11 years) and we all had fun dubbing movies, using the movie projector, experiencing a little VR experience, animating a short film, and everything in between. (Except for the movie screenings, which looked fun but for which we didn't have the patience as this wasn't our only stop that day.) The staff was friendly and it felt like they actually care about movies and the tech behind them. Also, the stop-motion animations that you get to make in the museum, you later get via email. We are so glad you enjoyed all the interactions with your sons at the museum, including the film screenings would have been a visit for the whole afternoon. Lot's of fun, even for those who "know the stuff".
I went with my 19 yo daughter, and we mostly enjoyed the time when we recorded our own soundtrack to an old "horror" movie, as well as when we shot our [very] short stop-motion animation.
Exhibits are all working, even when they are quite complicated.
Very friendly stuff!

Thank you, it's good to hear that even for an audience like yourselves the museum offers a great experience! You are right indeed, interactive museums struggle sometimes with having everything in shape, so we really love the fact you appreciate everything works and is taken care of by friendly staff (we're going to pass that on!.).

The museum is small but definitely worth a visit if you have an hour or so to spare and are interested in the history of filming. We loved that it is so interactive and you can try so many things out. In especially the bit where you can do your own sound with a selection of tools like coconut shells etc. the staff members were really friendly and helpful as well.

we found this place while strolling through the wonderful franciscan garden (which has one of the most beautiful statues I have ever seen), while looking for a place to have a post-lunch coffee. as cinema lovers who firmly believe each of us has creative and learning potential that can be nurtured and blossomed, we were immediately drawn to the sign that says "everyone can be kubrick!". we decided to come back to visit the museum some days later and were truly struck by its beautiful amalgamation of scientific information, historical information, exemplars (e.g., movies, images, maquetes?, audio-poems) , and interactive diy

Thank you so much! For us was not exist another choice where to open the museum when we had the opportunity to move into Mozarteum building. The garden is really a gem! And we are so glad that you appreciated the layers of our exhibition - playful interaction, diy approach, researched background and engaging learning!

Excellent initiative this Cinema Museum. A real surprise. The young leaders are very welcoming and attentive, they will guide you through the various interactive exercises.
Add sound to your film, build your own animation after watching the meticulous work of the animators at Disney,
Take your time, look carefully at each room, and don't miss seeing the wonderful animations in the projection room. A marvel in the pure tradition of Czech animation which has always been a pioneer in the field.
A museum not to be missed!

I got caught out by the opening hours, I knew it was closed on Mondays but hadn't looked closely at the times and arrived around 10am to find it closed. The hours are currently 13:00 to 19:00. I swapped my morning and afternoon activities and it all worked out ok.
A second surprise was no card payments. That's really rare nowadays and I think that needs to change to avoid turning away too many cash-less visitors. I managed 4 days in Prague without any CZK, I had some EUR notes in my wallet, they accepted those.
The museum has two floors dedicated to a hands-on experience of motion pictures showing the evolution from still images. There's quite a lot on the lower level about animation and a desk showing rotoscoping. There are guides in the museum to explain and demonstrate things.
The hand cranked 35mm projector is interesting. I didn't initially realise you could turn it yourself, nor that it has an optical sound head on it. If you look closely between the sprockets you can see it's a modern film print with Dolby Digital data lurking between the sprockets.
There was an editing room which wasn't finished when I was there. Editing on film is more intuitive than the digital world but far harder, it'll be interesting to see how that's presented in the future.
The short VR film shown on a cheap smartphone-based headset might be interesting if you've not seen one before. I think this would be better if it showed the evolution of headsets with the second part of the film on a more modern/expensive headset.
I can't remember now if they emphasise the significance of the development of flexible film by Eastman/Goodwin as a medium that enabled projection of films longer than a few seconds. Photography in the 19th century was on glass plates and that's a far from ideal medium for projection of multiple images. I think one of the film format posters from the International Moving Image Society would be a useful addition too.

A very well-equipped museum located in the very center of Prague. First, I appreciate the helpful and nice staff that was ready to help any time we needed. Second, it was very enjoyable to explore all the interactive staff (virtual reality, creating our own sounds for a movie, creating our own animated movie that you get by email later...) - it was fun for both me and the children. Third, you can also have a coffee, sit down, relax and possibly leave a note on the wall. Fourth, the museum has been awarded by Czech Lion movie award.

Written February 19, 2019
Hello, I'm sorry for my a bit belated answer! It is possible to walk around the museum with the stick, although the museum is not fully obstacle free: there are about 6 steps down that lead to the cashier and the first floor of the museum and stairs to the lower floor. Unfortunately there are no disabled toilets... The reduced price (students, seniors over 60 years old) is 120 czk, you don't need a passport to get the reduction. For disabled visitors we offer reduced price 70 czk. Hope it answers all your questions, let us know if you have any additional ones. All the best from Prague!
