Address
Neighborhood: Nove Mesto (New Town)
Nearly 700 hundred meters long, Wenceslas Square represents the most frequent and buzzing crossroads of the city. The National Museum in the upper part of the square watches over your spending spree in countless shops and retail stores lining the entire square, which ends at Na Příkopě, the most famous shopping street. When tired or broke, you can explore the city's underpasses, which can take you to the Old Town or to the courtyards of art nouveau houses with secret gems of greenery, white benches and rose bushes that provide unexpected peace in the midst of the city. Be sure to pay a visit to the traditional cafés, classic Czech pubs, cinemas and theaters. National Theater near the river has a lot to offer to foreigners. Go to the river bank and enjoy live music and drinks while watching a sunset behind Prague Castle.

moving pictures to move people: be sure to stop by!
we found this place while strolling through the wonderful franciscan garden (which has one of the most beautiful statues I have ever seen), while looking for a place to have a post-lunch coffee. as cinema lovers who firmly believe each of us has creative and learning potential that can be nurtured and blossomed, we were immediately drawn to the sign that says "everyone can be kubrick!". we decided to come back to visit the museum some days later and were truly struck by its beautiful amalgamation of scientific information, historical information, exemplars (e.g., movies, images, maquetes?, audio-poems) , and interactive diy more time everyone can be kubrik
Thank you so much! For us was not exist another choice where to open the museum when we had the opportunity to move into Mozarteum building. The garden is really a gem! And we are so glad that you appreciated the layers of our exhibition - playful interaction, diy approach, researched background and engaging learning!

    Fantastic and interesting visit
Last minute decision to visit on last day of trip looking for another interesting Museum. Staff were incredibly welcoming and appeared genuinely friendly and interested in us. Couldn't be more helpful, explaining (in fantastic English) about all exhibits. Really interactic and engaging. The VR experience is well worth the small extra charge. Fantastic visit. Would recommend to anyone.
Thank you very much for the review. We are so glad that NaFilm became your last minute target in Prague and that the experience was so captivating for you. Greetings from NaFilM!

    A brilliant place
Many thanks for a great day visiting your museum yesterday. It was brilliant. I particularly loved all the carefully crafted and imaginative interactive elements. This is clearly a place that pleases young people (and not so young people) and you don't have to be particularly into film to appreciate it. I loved the comparison of the contemporary VR experience with that of the earliest films for their audiences - and your modern VR film was very compelling. The highlight for me, however, was your exhibition about animation. It was truly beautiful and revelatory to see these wonderful classic films. All your staff were knowledgeable, multilingual and on hand to help with any element. My visit was a highlight of my trip to Prague. May you continue your excellent work for a long time. Thank you!

    That's how Netflix was born...
An excellent experience created by the team of highly dedicated film fans. It makes you realise how difficult it was to trick people to see the movement instead of still pictures. It is explained here starting almost from the Adam and Eve :-) There is also a lot about how to add ANY sound to any pictures. Everything here is designed to be interactive. There are quite a lot of movies lasting from 25 sec to 15 min so reserve yourself even 3 hours if you want to see all of them. Please note that the movie about an elefant can be too drastic to animal lovers or small kids. The complete staff is very friendly and helpful. I am impressed by this place.
Dear Andrej, thank you very much for the kind review! We are happy that you had a pleasant time in our museum and you enjoyed interaction not only with our exhibits but also with our enthusiastic staff :) Best regards from NaFilM!

    Fun, inspiration, support
I was in this museum with my class: children from 8 to 11 years of freedom primary school. It was amazing, entertaining, inspirational. We will come back as two hours are simply not enough. The tour guide was friendly and supportive. Thank you very much all of you for what you created for us. It was lots of fun.
Thank you very much for the review, we are so happy that your pupils had a nice and enriching time in our museum. We look forward to the next opportunity to invite your class in the NaFilM museum.

    Interactive and fun
I was there with my children 10 and 12 years old. Great experience, especially Ruchárna where they could make their own dabing. They also enjoyed making animation with flexible figures and much more. Friendly people and cosy café.

    Best interactive museum
A fun, interactive museum experience which gives you a great understanding of early filmmaking. Staff was amazing at guiding me through the different interactive exhibitions. I unfortunately came an hour become closing, and it wasn't enough to explore everything so plan for at least 1,5 hours.

Very interactive and fun history of early film
Very enjoyable museum. A lot of interactive activities. Learnt a lot about the history of early film. Also paid extra for the VR film, which was interesting for the VR experience, but I didn't think the film itself was too great. The staff were also very nice, friendly and helpful from start to finish. Highly recommended.
Thank you very much for you review and appreciation of our interactive stuff and way how we present the history of early cinema. It's pity that the VR movie did not appeal to you as much as the exhibition, it is the Czech VR achievement in this field and debut work with small production, however the use of VR principles for therapeutical impact is the most stimulating part of experience . Best regards from NaFilM!

    Wonderful interactive museum
We had a wonderful experience and learned a lot about the history of film. There are several interactive exhibits that we enjoyed as a family - how to add sounds on film the way it was done in early stages, how you can make your own stop motion animation, and a VR exhibition. Staff were also so very kind and ready to answer our questions. Really a hidden gem and a must-do in Prague.
Thank you very much for your review, we are so glad that you spent wonderful time in our museum! Best regards from NaFilM team.

Good place to learn about film history and production
I got caught out by the opening hours, I knew it was closed on Mondays but hadn't looked closely at the times and arrived around 10am to find it closed. The hours are currently 13:00 to 19:00. I swapped my morning and afternoon activities and it all worked out ok. A second surprise was no card payments. That's really rare nowadays and I think that needs to change to avoid turning away too many cash-less visitors. I managed 4 days in Prague without any CZK, I had some EUR notes in my wallet, they accepted those. The museum has two floors dedicated to a hands-on experience of motion pictures showing the evolution from still images. There's quite a lot on the lower level about animation and a desk showing rotoscoping. There are guides in the museum to explain and demonstrate things. The hand cranked 35mm projector is interesting. I didn't initially realise you could turn it yourself, nor that it has an optical sound head on it. If you look closely between the sprockets you can see it's a modern film print with Dolby Digital data lurking between the sprockets. There was an editing room which wasn't finished when I was there. Editing on film is more intuitive than the digital world but far harder, it'll be interesting to see how that's presented in the future. The short VR film shown on a cheap smartphone-based headset might be interesting if you've not seen one before. I think this would be better if it showed the evolution of headsets with the second part of the film on a more modern/expensive headset. I can't remember now if they emphasise the significance of the development of flexible film by Eastman/Goodwin as a medium that enabled projection of films longer than a few seconds. Photography in the 19th century was on glass plates and that's a far from ideal medium for projection of multiple images. I think one of the film format posters from the International Moving Image Society would be a useful addition too.

We had a lovely experience at the NAFilm museum. They do a great job at making film technique and history accessible, fun and exciting. There’s a lot of activities you can do yourself and the staff help explain the context and idea behind it. You can feel that they’re incredibly passionate about what they’re doing. Would recommend for everybody who are film interested and/or like interactive museums.

I highly recommend this Museum for anyone who is interested in films. The staff is very helpful and explains alot, but also leaves enough space to discover the Museum in your own pace. There are many experiments which you can do by yourself.

This NaFilM: National film museum is a great secret find! It's small, but it's packed with interactive exhibits that make it a lot of fun to explore. The staff are super friendly and the shop is lovely. You can easily spend an hour or two here, but it's better to go when there are fewer people around so you can really take your time. It's an amazing experience that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in film or movies, or whoever likes to play around, really! 5/5 stars.

This interactive museum let's you explore first-hand how film developed, and what discoveries had to first be made about our eyes and brain. You can play around with sound and even make your own soundtrack to movies. At the end, you can make your own animation and learn how much work goes into it! Highly recommend, for adults and kids!

The museum is quite small but definitely worth a visit! The staff is also super helpful. My favorite part was the sound recording studio where we could create our own foley effects. I recommend to actually try everything that the museum has to offer, and not just speed-walk through the rooms, to get the full experience. This could be a fun place to visit with a small friend group.

An amazing little museum and a great way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy day! Very reasonable price for entry (we paid 160czk each) and all staff were lovely throughout our visit and very helpful explaining the details of the exhibits to us. Even as 4 adults we had so much fun with all the interactive exhibits, especially creating our own soundtrack to a film clip. Very detailed information on the film making process as well as a bit of silliness. Would definitely recommend to anybody as a must see in Prague!

This little museum offers a peculiar variety of activities related to the moving image, to better understand the basics of cinema, ranging from the magic lantern to virtual reality. Loved the sound cabin where you can score scenes from great movies.

While Prague is popular for its delicious beer and amazing castles, one must not overlook its museums. Me and my girlfriend stumbled upon the National Film Museum one sunny day as we were strolling through the Franciscan Garden in Prague 1. As we are both movie enthusiasts we decided to go in and were not disappointed.

On the contrary, the museum is one of Prague's hidden gems. Due to the fact that more than half of the exhibits are interactive, visiting the film museum makes for a fun and educational experience, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about how movies were made back in the days. For instance, you can create your own movie soundtrack - this was also our favourite part.

Although it's not very popular amongst tourists, maybe because of its location (it's enclosed in the Franciscan Garden) or the lack of promo, make time for a visit here next time you come to Prague.

An excellent guided tour with many interactive activities, suitable for kids as well as adults. The museum gives you an overall idea of the origins of film and enables you to try different visual experiments from basic ones to virtual reality. You can also try to be a foley artist and to make a simple cartoon. Highly recommended!
