The area

Neighborhood: Malá Strana (Little Quarter)
Malá Strana is one of the oldest and the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city. Nestled underneath Prague Castle it was once a part of the Kings route taken by future kings on their way to coronation - originating in the Old Town, crossing Charles Bridge and leading to Saint Vitus Cathedral. Cobblestone streets are lined with picturesque medieval houses, remarkable palaces, churches, kitsch shops and restaurants. Do not hesitate to turn a corner into any narrow street. You will suddenly find yourself in a calm and charming neighborhood full of hidden gardens, parks with peacocks, fruit trees and ponds. As the neighborhood is a home to Czech Parliament and many ministries, you can also run into well-dressed officials. If you are thirsty or hungry, it is the right place to be. Restaurants offer delicious traditional food and of course, the best Czech beers.

You can find this sculpture of Trabant car with four legs in the garden of the German Embassy.

It symbolises events of summer 1989 when thousands of East German citizens arrived in Prague in their Trabant cars, left them behind, and asked for the asylum in the embassy of Western Germany.

You can find the original piece in the David Cerny Musoleum.

After you have seen this there is a path up into the gardens.

Location: Embassy of Germany, Vlašská 19, you need to go around the embassy to the backside with garden

I went on a quest to see all of David Černý's public artwork in Prague, and this was the last stop on my agenda! It was tricky to find, considering you have to walk down a street and then turn into a children's park and look through the fence to see the artwork. I wish it were more "public"! But it was funny and I got a definite kick out of it. Plus this is a pretty cool area of Prague to just walk around in--near some parks and cool buildings. I went on a Sunday morning and really enjoyed having the streets mostly to myself while sipping a coffee and looking at some cool nearby street art on the walls coming down the nearby park on Petřín hill.

Garden with some nice pieces of art like car with legs. Peaceful area anyway and worth of visit. Not easy to find a way inside.

I don't know if the garden is normally open for the public, but when I visited the area and wanted to see this statue, the gates were closed and you could hardly see the statue at all. It was also extremely difficult to find and far from public transportation. To find it, you need to walk the street almost all the way up, and turn left to a playground and then to the hiking trail behind the park. I wouldn't recommend exploring the area simply to see Quo Vadis. Disappointing.

David Cerny, a controversial but interesting Czech sculptor, has many pieces around Prague. We visited the usual ones, but this is probably his least visited and yet most meaningful. A golden Trabant car on four legs in tribute to 4000 East Germans who occupied the garden of the West Germany embassy before being granted political asylum.

It's easy to miss this as it is actually in the 'back garden' of the current German Embassy and only visible through gaps in the fence. A children's playground is just behind an entrance through a wall which leads to the path behind the embassy. It's also opposite a hospital. Walk up the path and past by the playground (you don't need to go in). Just beyond the playground, the path continues up into the woods of Petrin Park or you can turn left onto a track. Follow this track for 100 metres or so and it's on your left - remember it is an embassy with guards, so be sensitive to this.

An interesting piece of art and history all rolled into one with the extra bonus of seeing inside the embassy gardens. They were having a fancy garden party when we there!
