About
I am offering a unique first-hand experience of a mesmerising 170-years-old photographic technique called wet plate collodion. No digital camera hidden inside a decrepit bellows - this is the real deal, 100% handmade original photographs on tin plates that will last for many generations (and perhaps confuse a future archeologist or two). By booking with me you will not only get an everlasting memory of you time spent in Prague, but also experience the magic of 19th century photography in real life and gain an understanding of how difficult yet rewarding photography was back then. I am an experienced portrait and documentary photographer with a small studio at Malá Strana, the Lesser Side, in the very heart of old Prague. I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of clients from all over the world. My works was awarded with several prizes including two 1st place awards at Czech Press Photo (Portrait, Arts).

Neighborhood: Malá Strana (Little Quarter)
Malá Strana is one of the oldest and the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city. Nestled underneath Prague Castle it was once a part of the Kings route taken by future kings on their way to coronation - originating in the Old Town, crossing Charles Bridge and leading to Saint Vitus Cathedral. Cobblestone streets are lined with picturesque medieval houses, remarkable palaces, churches, kitsch shops and restaurants. Do not hesitate to turn a corner into any narrow street. You will suddenly find yourself in a calm and charming neighborhood full of hidden gardens, parks with peacocks, fruit trees and ponds. As the neighborhood is a home to Czech Parliament and many ministries, you can also run into well-dressed officials. If you are thirsty or hungry, it is the right place to be. Restaurants offer delicious traditional food and of course, the best Czech beers.

    Memory to cherish forever!
Amazing experience, would 100% recommend! Honza is a true master of his craft. Honza will guide you through each step of the process, and explain how it all works. This is a great way to support a Prague based artist and to have a unique and special momento from Prague! My girlfriend and I did a couples photo together and we will cherish the portrait forever!

    Couple Photo
A fun experience & a photo that we will cherish forever. We stumbled across this studio next to our hotel and are so glad that we did! It was also really fun to learn about the Victorian camera and get to watch our photo develop before our eyes! Highly recommend!

    A dive into the past
We discovered Honza’s studio from the internet and we happened to get there during our trip in Prague. His lab was very authentic and he was able to made us partecipate in the whole process of printing photos on a metal surface. Honza’s lab is an unconventional place where you can dive into the past.

    Great experience with beautiful picture
With us, 20 selfies fail, Honza can create a beautiful photowork of art with 1 click with a 200 years old camera. Honza takes plenty of time to take a good photo. He explains the entire process to you and takes the time to highlight the details. We are amazed by the details, patience and work of Honza. It's definitely worth your money! We are happy with our photoplate and prints. Highly recommended!

This was easily one of the highlights of my trip to Prague! Honza is incredibly passionate about his craft and personally for me, to watch an artist who cares so much about his work at play, is such a treat! He's also a great guy. He introduces you to the process of wet plate photography - chemicals, lights, development - everything. Everything is so precise. A window into a time long gone by. Such a unique experience! I bet nothing else comes close in that regard.

This was a gift to my girlfriend on her birthday. I can't think of a better way to remember, what was already a special day and an even more special holiday. The photograph is in her room. Thank you Honza! :)

Whilst visiting Prague, we quite spontaneously decided to have an old-fashioned family portrait taken in this cute little studio in Prague's Lesser Town. Honza, the photographer, is very nice and patient (also with a 4-year old ;) ) and answers any questions you might have. Speaks perfect English, too. He has these big 19th century camera's, complete with black cloth and all, I had no idea that still existed outside museums :) So it's quite an interesting experience and the result is just unique - in every sense of the word. The best place to be for a truly original portrait!

Having seen Honza Sakar's portrait work previously, it was a real treat to have my and my daughter's portraits taken by him. Honza's artwork is made by using wet plate collodion, a 19-century process that gives you not only beautiful tangible photos but it also stands out from any other photo technique. The studio itself is set in a lovely street in Prague centre and to me, having observed Honza's mastery with all sorts of material and chemicals involved in the process of crafting a collodion portrait, made me think he must be an alchemist! He is also a master of improvisation and having seen that my 2-year old was not quite in the mood of staying still for any period of time, has asked his partner and a puppy to help with putting my daughter at ease. She loved the whole experience and had a great time in the studio! It was truly magical to see portraits emerge from the solution. An excitement from being able to observe the process and being able to have something unique, timeless and tangible in the end is something that can't easily be beaten. We are already looking forward to having more portraits taken in this studio next time we are in Prague!

If you are reading this you are probably thinking of booking Honza for a session.

Well, Pictures are amazing, his stories are interesting, the process is fascinating and the thing I took back with us the most is the surprising experience of knocking at 1850's window. So should you be there in front of his window, exactly like us at one point, trying to understand what he does and whether or not it's worthy to contact him, just knock at his window, and enjoy your session!

Very intimate and unique experience. Honza is a true creative and will always go the extra mile to make sure the craft is up to his personal standards. Learning the process from beginning to end and being able to ask questions makes it more of a workshop. its not your old fashion portrait studio and he is up for getting creative and will accept a challenge.

My wife and I were there between Christmas and New Years, it was cold and we didn't put too much planning into the trip. When we passed the studio we saw Honza in action at 10pm I knew we needed to look into it. Went home sent an email and by midnight we had a time booked the next day to come in. Best part of the trip really we ended up spending a half day hanging out in the studio. Highly recommned

Okay, I found this place incidentally when taking a walk in Prague. I was astonished by the works in the window and left a short notice in the facebook asking about a time slot.

Honza — the owner of the place — is very nice and polite guy, who made everything by himself, and offered explanations in a lab of how the entire process is done. And it’s done in an old fashioned way all the way: the difference is chemicals (no Pb anymore and you don’t want to, really), light (electrical flash instead of chemical) and metal plate instead of glass one.

The photo you will gain won’t be perfect due to chemistry and fully manual processing. If you want a perfect photo, you got to go digital. But at the same time it’s going to be unique.

The photographer catches your character and tries to represent it. The photo becomes very vivid and deep. Definitely go and make it once again.

Please note, that a person expects you to answer “no” if you initially asked about the price and then rejected the idea. Politeness and everything.

(There is a pretty winery just behind the corner — use it while you are waiting for your photo).

Best experience I’ve had in a very long time! Honza is so talented and he walked me through the process with so much new information I never knew about! He is so knowledgeable and love what he does! Also was so easy to set up appointment and he was very accommodating. The final results for the portrait were literally amazing! I literally can’t wait to do this again
