About
I am offering a unique first-hand experience of a mesmerising 170-years-old photographic technique called wet plate collodion. No digital camera hidden inside a decrepit bellows - this is the real deal, 100% handmade original photographs on tin plates that will last for many generations (and perhaps confuse a future archeologist or two). By booking with me you will not only get an everlasting memory of you time spent in Prague, but also experience the magic of 19th century photography in real life and gain an understanding of how difficult yet rewarding photography was back then. I am an experienced portrait and documentary photographer with a small studio at Malá Strana, the Lesser Side, in the very heart of old Prague. I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of clients from all over the world. My works was awarded with several prizes including two 1st place awards at Czech Press Photo (Portrait, Arts).

Neighborhood: Malá Strana (Little Quarter)
Malá Strana is one of the oldest and the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city. Nestled underneath Prague Castle it was once a part of the Kings route taken by future kings on their way to coronation - originating in the Old Town, crossing Charles Bridge and leading to Saint Vitus Cathedral. Cobblestone streets are lined with picturesque medieval houses, remarkable palaces, churches, kitsch shops and restaurants. Do not hesitate to turn a corner into any narrow street. You will suddenly find yourself in a calm and charming neighborhood full of hidden gardens, parks with peacocks, fruit trees and ponds. As the neighborhood is a home to Czech Parliament and many ministries, you can also run into well-dressed officials. If you are thirsty or hungry, it is the right place to be. Restaurants offer delicious traditional food and of course, the best Czech beers.

An amazing experience of tintype photography with Honza
Sep 2021
On our trip to Prague, we were lucky to meet Honza in his photo studio. It was an amazing experience and beautiful tintype pictures at the end. Honza is a true artist. With a lot of passion and love for photography, he showed us all the steps of making our portrait plates with a technique that is more than a hundred years old. We experienced the whole process from the beginning to the magic moment. And Honza takes his time to get to know us. So that in the end something special emerges. Thank you Honza for this great day in Prague.

Must have experience
Dec 2020 • Friends
Saki (as old friends call him) has not changed since we met on highschool 25 years ago. Buddy with specific skills, interests and opinions able to be absolutely focused on what is he doing.

It was really pleasure spent some time in Saki’s atelier with my kids and got amazingly looking photo produced by photographic process from the 1850s called wet plate collodion.

If you are still looking for any xmas presents, stop doing that and visit studio located in the historic centre of Prague (Malá Strana). You will take away an unforgettable experience and stunning metal sheet.

Much more than a portrait session
Jul 2020 • Solo
This is my first review on Trip Advisor, and it is with deep gratitude that I am writing these lines. I found Honzas studio by chance while getting lost in Prague on a sunny day and something in the beauty of his photographs displayed in the windows struck me. It was this pure rawness and authenticity he was able to catch in people I hadn't seen before often; and after spending hours of talking in his studio and listening to the stories behind his captures, I can absolutely understand why that is. In all honesty: I have rarely met such a kind, genuine, positive and curious person like Honza! It starts with his beautifully located, almost hidden studio that gave me a sense of comfort and familiarity. With his dog as a company (I became a big fan, even as a cat person), Honza took me through the whole process, from preparing the plate for the shooting itself to its development in his charming small darkroom. As a person who considers herself to be rather unphotogenic (and therefore sometimes feels a bit weird in front of a camera), this most definitely wasn't the case with Honza. I felt very comfortable and at ease with him, with a stunning portrait of myself as a result. But this photo is so much more than that, it is a symbol of an experience and story that came with its creation – and ultimately, of my favorite memory of Prague.

Thank you so much Honza. I can't wait for my next portrait with you.

An unforgetable and special experience in Prague
Feb 2020
It was totally unplanned for when I stumbled onto Honza's portrait session on tripadvisor. It got me very curious to read all these wonderful reviews about the session that I have decided to book one during our trip in Prague. Surely, we were not disappointed! We were fortunate to meet Honza and visited his workshop at the end of February, which was filled with many of his fascinating art work. We came in with two young kids (age 3 and 5), and my kids were not the quiet type and they definitely couldn't keep their hands still, however Honza was very patient and kind throughout the whole process. He explained the whole process, showed us all the steps in his dark room, and was very detailed and friendly in explaining everything. The most worth noting part was that my daughter closed her eyes when the photo was taken! (while so much work has went into preparing this ONE single photo, and it was a big deal!), Honza immediately offered to retake the photo again, which was totally out of our expectation! I still remembered he said that "we are here to take good photos, not just a photo"!
I could see the true artist and perfectionist in him, an awesome photographer and person throughout! This photo was the best souvenir of any kind that we have brought back from our trip, and I would definitely recommend Honza's workshop at any time!

Honza is such an impressive photographer, a true artist and a super kind and fun person. You can see immediately that he puts his whole heart in his work. His technique is unique and the pictures are just magic! They look even more impressive in real life! We had a great evening with Honza and could follow his steps as he prepared and later developped the photographs. This was such a great experience, and now we are very happy with the pictures and treasure them alot! :) We will be happy to be back one day! If you are gonna have even just one portrait taken in your life, make sure it‘s gonna be at Honza‘s studio!

My partner and I visited Honza's studio during a trip to Prague for a portrait and had a fantastic experience. We were able to participate in Honza's fascinating process of creating a tintype photograph from start to finish, and left with an invaluable souvenir of our trip, as well as some stunning prints. Honza is a true artist and master of his craft and it was a pleasure to visit his studio and gain insight into his operation. A truly irreplaceable experience and a must for anyone visiting the city.

A wonderful gift!
Dec 2019
This was easily one of the highlights of my trip to Prague! Honza is incredibly passionate about his craft and personally for me, to watch an artist who cares so much about his work at play, is such a treat! He's also a great guy. He introduces you to the process of wet plate photography - chemicals, lights, development - everything. Everything is so precise. A window into a time long gone by. Such a unique experience! I bet nothing else comes close in that regard.

This was a gift to my girlfriend on her birthday. I can't think of a better way to remember, what was already a special day and an even more special holiday. The photograph is in her room. Thank you Honza! :)

Unique experience and extraordinary result
Feb 2020 • Family
Whilst visiting Prague, we quite spontaneously decided to have an old-fashioned family portrait taken in this cute little studio in Prague's Lesser Town. Honza, the photographer, is very nice and patient (also with a 4-year old ;) ) and answers any questions you might have. Speaks perfect English, too. He has these big 19th century camera's, complete with black cloth and all, I had no idea that still existed outside museums :) So it's quite an interesting experience and the result is just unique - in every sense of the word. The best place to be for a truly original portrait!

Timeless and well-crafted portraits
Nov 2019
Having seen Honza Sakar's portrait work previously, it was a real treat to have my and my daughter's portraits taken by him. Honza's artwork is made by using wet plate collodion, a 19-century process that gives you not only beautiful tangible photos but it also stands out from any other photo technique. The studio itself is set in a lovely street in Prague centre and to me, having observed Honza's mastery with all sorts of material and chemicals involved in the process of crafting a collodion portrait, made me think he must be an alchemist! He is also a master of improvisation and having seen that my 2-year old was not quite in the mood of staying still for any period of time, has asked his partner and a puppy to help with putting my daughter at ease. She loved the whole experience and had a great time in the studio! It was truly magical to see portraits emerge from the solution. An excitement from being able to observe the process and being able to have something unique, timeless and tangible in the end is something that can't easily be beaten. We are already looking forward to having more portraits taken in this studio next time we are in Prague!
