Thank You America Memorial (Diky Ameriko) is an memorial dedicated to soldiers of 16th armored division that liberated Plzen in World War 2. It is located couple of minutes walk from city center, and just down the street from Great Synagogue, so its worth a visit.

For years, the liberation of Pilsen has been lying. Until 1989, residents of Pilsen can say thanks to America. The memorial burst and the city is preparing its reconstruction.

We stopped here for photos while in town. It was great to see that the people of Pilsner appreciated what our servicemen did during World War II. The memorial is beautiful and makes for a great photo.

We have visited today and the monument is gone. There is a note both in Czech and English about some structural problem with the monument which is being repaired at the moment. The new one will be made out of granite from France apparently. Considering the monument was built only in 1995 it must have been done pretty poorly.

Salutes US Army's role in liberating this region. Quick, easy to view. Fun to visit during Liberation Anniversary celebrations in early May. Many mi uments throughout this region for the role of US Army and General Patton.

So being American, we were quite surprised to read Pilsen had a "Thank you, America" memorial. We made sure to check it out. Thankfully we went in the daytime. It was populated by a large group of unkempt homeless, begging for beer money. The posts had been taken down so all we got a picture of was a couple of plaques and dirty homeless. Steer clear!

To understand the poor rating of this "landmark"monument, you´d have to know a little more about the history of WWII, and the terrible crimes committed by both sides of the conflict. In any case, the fact is that Plzen was liberated by the U.S. Army and hence the powers-that-be decided on this particular manner of commemoration.

It was very heartwarming to see the "Thank You America" Memorial while visiting a foreign country. During World War 2 it was the United States who liberated Pilsen and to this day they celebrate it every year at the liberation festival which is held in May.

Also there is a memorial to the 2nd Infantry Division on another street. Sorry, but I forgot to write down the location. I've included some photos.

Nice to see it. On "Amerika" street. I guess someone was grateful enough to put this up. If your choice is going to get a great beer somewhere or see this? get the beer. this is literally a 2 minute stop. good for taking a picture...
