About
The first step towards the founding of Ethnographic Museum was the Ethnographic Exhibition of Pilsen in 1912. The objects from this exhibition became the basis of the collection which was transported to the historical Gerlach’s House in Drevena Street, where the museum was opened to the public for the first time in 1915. The main initiator was Ladislav Labek, collector and the ethnographer, who also became the first manager of the museum. Due to the growing collection, more room was afforded to the museum in the house of the former Chotesov Monastery in the main square during the 1930s. In 1948, the museum became part of the West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen. In March 2000, a new exhibition was opened, that presents municipal interiors from the Gothic period to the beginning of the 20th century. The second part is dealing with the life in the country, presents rural chambers or an original „black kitchen“ from the beginning of the 19th centrury. The exhibition is rounded off with folk costumes and customary objects from West Bohemia. A unique element of the exhibition is an antique apothecary shop.

Housed in house “U Zlatého růžence” which was built in 1897 according plans of then Director Josef Škorpila. On display are amongst others, Nature: Zoology, paleontology, Botany. History: prehistory, middle ages, modern times, archaeology. Ethnography: + 76,000 cultural, historical and ethnographic objects. Art: Oriental objects, antiquities, paintings and grafica, glass, sculptures and woodcutting, textiles and embroidery, Noble metals, porcelain and ceramics. At the large central staircase a relief on themes of Czech stories about Ctiradovi and Šárce (Vojtěch Šaff). At the ground floor a conference room and library (more than 90,000 volumes, amongst these: artistic, ethnographic and scientific literature, heraldry, numismatics, Bohemian history, archaeology). The first floor is monumental Exhibition Hall illuminated by a glass ceiling. Second floor: Jubilee room, dedicated to Emperor Franz Joseph I which is decorated with lunettes (Augustin Němejc), armory, 1363: firearms and armours late 14th to half 17th century, muskets from the 30-years war.

This nice museum is located in two Renaissance buildings in the Republic Square in the centre of town. Tour with a guide takes approximately one hour. You can see there a lot of interesting exhibits like old furniture, clothes or national costumes. We got many interesting information about how people lived in Pilsen region from our guide. Some of them were really new to me. Because they showed the exhibits on two floors, there were a lot of stairs during tour.
Takeing pictures without flash was alowed. Entrance fee was 60,-CZK per adult. The museum is worth visiting.

We went as a tour, the guide had a good understanding of english, were she explained the meaning and symbols of certain items she explained the periods of the furniture and the use for particular rooms. It was very interesting, I would recommend it.

This museum is such a gem....it's in a large old house and has tremendous offerings of artifacts, furniture, textiles, stoneware, and art. You need a guide (you'd get lost, it's like a labyrinth!) but if the guide does not speak your language, the museum has binders with explanations of each item in great detail. Lovely, would recommend!

A small museum telling the history of the town. You will get a guided tour for the prize of the entrance ticket. Really worth the visit.

This museum should on the list of Prague visit. It gives a peek into Czech culture and everyday life. We were only few people visiting this museum.
