The spa facilities are gorgeous... one of the most beautiful spas I have ever been in. The pool is amazing and they do a Vegas style light and sound show that is spectacular.
But the treatments, staff, and strict guidelines did not meet our expectations.
A previous reviewer mentioned “East meets West.” His review is spot on. Westerners who are accustomed to being pampered in a spa setting will have a bit of culture shock.
It is also important to note that the majority of the tourists visiting Karlovy Vary are Russians. Therefore signs, restaurant menus and practically everything else in this town are written in Russian and Czech.
In order to even spend a day visiting the spa, you are required to book one of their packages which include some ridiculous treatments you may not even want. I agree with some of the other reviewers about some of the treatments being “torture.” I expected the gum irrigation to be like a water pic treatment and it consisted of inserting a mouthpiece which squirted mineral water into your mouth for 15 minutes! After one minute it was enough for me! I shudder to think of the nasal inhalation treatments! The problem is that you don’t have much choice. They don’t offer facials or body wraps or any of the regular spa procedures that are normally offered by spas worldwide.
Everything is strictly regimented so the programs only allow you to spend a pre-established time within the spa facilities. It seems like they want to get you in and out on a schedule and you are not allowed to lounge around too much. So if you book a program lasting 3 hours, you are expected to leave the facility after that time and the fine print on your printed “spa schedule” states that they will charge you extra in 15 min increments if you stay longer. A huge difference from any other spa I have ever visited where you can lounge around the entire day if you wish after booking a treatment or two.
The spa staff is accustomed to ordering their guests around. I don’t believe that they are intending to be rude; it’s just a cultural difference. For example, I protested when one of the staff members insisted that I had to “report” for an Oxygen treatment about 30 minutes earlier than it was scheduled on my print out sheet. I wanted to enjoy lounging by the beautiful pool for those 30 minutes. My assertiveness paid off and she backed down. But most guests sheepishly follow orders. A spa guest shouldn’t have to go through that nonsense when you pay for a relaxation experience. Btw, I even got a couple of the very serious spa attendants to crack a smile and chill out a bit. I will give credit to the very nice booking clerk who was patent answering my questions and the receptionists at the front desk who greeted us with a friendly and professional demeanor.
One of the biggest disappointments was the fact that I was expecting some really hot water. The springs of Karlovy Vary are renowned for their hot temperatures. They did not have a Jacuzzi or whirlpool. For the Hydrotherapy mineral bath treatment, they set the water to a lukewarm temperature. They claim that it is 38C (around 100F) but it didn’t feel that warm. When the spa attendant left the room and I turned on the hot water tap to heat the water up they freaked out and ran into my treatment room to turn it off.
My massage was also a bit disappointing. They never asked me if I preferred a male or female therapist. I’m an experienced spa goer and too old to blush so I was okay with a male therapist. However a female customer should be given a choice so as not to feel uncomfortable. A language barrier existed with the massage therapist so I couldn’t communicate to him the areas I needed him to focus on. He seemed to have his own technique and wasn’t receptive to my attempts to communicate about the pressure and modality. Overall, the massage experience was mediocre.
As far as the cost, I paid about $120.00 for the 4 hr. treatment package which is less than many Western resort spas so I didn’t feel totally ripped off and am chalking it up to a cultural difference and expectations.

For some reason Tripadvisor has the chateau spa and the castle spa listed separately. They are one and the same.
The hotel romance puskin offers a discount on several of the packages there. It literally is right across the street so very convenient. We booked our 3-4 hour spa packages for the Castle spa when we arrived at the hotel for that afternoon. I got the super aroma package which had four treatments: 50 minute aromatherapy massage, 15 minute alternating cold/hot water therapy for feet/lower legs, pearl bath for 15 minutes (alternating power jets of water while you lay in bathtub) and 30 minutes oxygenoherapy. About $100. Puskin also has their own massage therapy including the lymphatic drainage and slimming massage but I was told you need perhaps 4 treatments to see an effect. They were fully booked so couldn't try it. They did book me into the Elizabeth spa for another aromatherapy massage (about $50 for 50 minutes). Not as nice a facility as the Castle spa, have to bring your own towel (whereas our package at Castle spa included towels and robes). Of the two, I think the massage was better at Castle spa, but, my husband didn't think his massage (male masseus) was very good at Castle spa--he would have preferred a firmer massage. I don't think he communicated this to the masseus (my husband doesn't have a whole lot of experience with spas or masseus). If there are specific spa services that you want, would suggest you book in advance. I did check out the prices next door at the Promenada hotel but they were more expensive and they note that the services are really “cosmetic.”
Upside of castle baths are that they are clean, quiet, not crowded, and just across the street from our hotel. Downside is that they require your purchase a package so you can not be more selective about your treatments.

Exceptionally beautiful spa in the centre of town. Expensive by Czech but not by Western standards with a menu of services and packages, however you are limited by time, and the changing rooms are tiny, especially in the height of winter when you have layers of clothes. The service is still old Eastern European, very strict and regimented, but the pool and surrounding relaxation area is divine. Worth a visit even if your hotel has an in-house spa.

We knew if was expensive for the 2 hour wellness programme (even with a slight discount from booking with our hotel opposite). So very disappointed by facilities and staff as expected more for the price. The swimming pool was not very warm considering its in a themal town. The mineral pool was not open due to carbon dioxide and the kneipp pool was not open for the first half hour. The website describes '2 types of sauna, an infrared sauna' giving the impression there are 3 saunas but there is only a dry one and the infrared one and the steam room took ages to get steamy. The floors are dangerously slippy - but you are not given shoes or towels in the entrance fee. Staff did not show us around so left to find out out how to use everything which meant i did not use the inhalation thingy. All in all a very disappointing and expensive 2 hours, which was meant to be the highlight of my trip to Karlovy Vary.

Dear Marie S,
I find your review somewhat unjust and confusing. It would seem that you neglected to do at least a little research into our establishment before your visit. Your dissatisfaction therefore is the result of incompatible expectation. Let me explain, our relaxation pool does indeed contain 40% thermal mineral water and is maintained at a temperature of approx. 32%. This is the recommended temperature because it allows everyone, regardless of physical condition, to use the pool. You mentioned something about carbon dioxide, I could not find any indication of what this might mean. There are three saunas at the Castle Spa, located one beside the other, a Turkish steam sauna, a Finnish dry sauna and an infrared sauna. I can assure you all the floor surfaces fulfill the necessary safety standards required for such an establishment. We offer a range of apparel at main reception i.e. towels etc., available to every visitor for a small fee. Finally it is necessary to announce your presence at the pool reception, as indicated, on arrival in the spa area, allowing our professional staff to assist you and explain the many features of the Castle Spa. Everything about the features of our establishment, and much more, that I have written above are available from a number of sources, allowing our valued visitors ample opportunity in advance to determine whether to visit our fine and unique spa.
With the above information I sincerely hope to have alleviated any doubts you may retain.

We went in at 2pm for the "wellness family program". 2 hours was enough time, but we easily could have stayed longer. The staff was friendly, professional and helpful. The spa is exactly like the photos on their website, with beautiful natural rock walls, marble everywhere and super clean. The infinity mineral pool was fabulous.
Bring flip flops and rent the towel, sheet and robe. I wasn't really sure what the sheet was for, I used it to sit on in the sauna and lounge chairs. The change rooms are co-ed, which is ok because everyone gets their own cubicle with a locked door and electronic key fob. The showers are separate women and men, and then you meet up again in the pool area. They also have mini personal safes for valuables.
I recommend you take your time, pre-book a treatment or two, relax in the lounge chairs and soak in the healing waters. We left relaxed and refreshed, a great way to experience a real European spa. Thank-you Zamecke Lazne.

If you get fascinated by the repressed Communist-like service, (where the client means nothing) Zamecke Lazne is the right place for you!
The 'great' treatment starts at the entrance, with bored receptionists who treat visitors like they are not welcome.
After getting changed you enter the pool area with a second reception, where you are supposed to show the treatments you will be doing to another even more bored member of the staff who the only thing is thinking is "when will I manage to get home?"
Let's not even talk about treatments, or better 'tortures'. As we only had 2 hours time we could choose only 2 treatments: a 15' massage (??) and a oxygen treatment, a sort of inhalation. I got a on-the-way-to-retirement woman who could barely stand on her feet but at least my boyfriend got a man, who could use pressure while massaging. My 'therapist' did not even feel where she was going with the hands, her gestures where so automatic that I felt she was baking bread on me.
After the 2 treatments - oh did I mention that the oxygen inhalation included some intaking of vitamins that they dont even tell you about? they just give you 3 pills and a glass of water, without informing you what you are swallowing. So after these two great experiences we had more than 1h left that we HAD TO spend in the one and only swimming pool as the staff already switched off all the other amenities such ad the sort of 'sauna' room and all the rest. So after 30' the staff was standing in front of us, staring at us and shutting down even the whirpool AND the lights in the swimming pool. Let's say that it must have been a very special evening for all of them in order to kick out clients half an hour before the closing time.
We travel a lot and we love going to spas. This was by so far, the worst experience I have ever had. I never felt so unwelcome before.
Don't go to the Zamecke Lasne spa, it will make you feel bad about yourself.

We took a 2-hour access to the SPA with 2 treatments (Kneipp hydrotherapy & Partial massage) for 56€ per pers. Partial massage only last for 12 min and the Kneipp hydrotherapy is some kind of a torture where you have to keep your feet for 1 min in cold water 15C and then for 1 min in hot water 60C.. we found it impossible even for a couple of sec.. The only sauna available was a infra red cabine - a box for 2 pers, constantly occupied by other people.. So the only thing we could do was swim in the pool. An expensive swim was that..

My friend and I were visiting Karlovy Vary for about two days or so and booked the trip on short notice, so we understood that our options were limited of where we could get treatments. Our hotel recommended this place. The treatments looked interesting. We signed up each for a 50-minute aromatherapy massage and one adjoining procedure (we did hydrotherapy, it was the only appealing thing on the list). We arrived and the reception lady was nice. When we went upstairs, those ladies were rather pleasant too. We speak English and they managed to speak enough for us to understand them. What really makes us not like this place was the fact that our 50-min messages ended up being up 20 minutes each. The lady I had was rather nice, but my friend had a male masseur. She has had plenty of men masseur before and has never felt so uncomfortable in her entire life compared to this guy. The room where they give you the massages are brightly lit and with a completely inappropriate atmosphere if you want a relaxing massage. Also, because we were there until about 30 mins before they were set to close, we felt that they were trying to rush us out of the spa.
This place was absolutely not worth my 90 bucks.

We booked a four hour package costing around £70 each. We were really looking forward to it; what a let down.
The pool is very small and outside the treatments there is very little to do: for example; limited relaxing areas, no sauna's or steam rooms apart from a small wooden box that can seat two people.
We had a massage which at best was ok but the room was very bright and they played regular radio pop music and not relaxing music, the phone kept ringing as well; hardly relaxing!
We were due to leave at 3pm and came out of our massages at 2.45 very thristy and wanted to have a quick 5 minute drink of tea before leaving the spa area to get changed. What happened next was unbeliveable.
We started to pour the tea and they stopped us and said we had to leave now. We tried to point out that there was 15 minutes left but they then shoved a piece of paper in our faces pointing to the time. We tried to explain there was time and we would be less that 5 minutes but no one could speak English. Frankly they had our money by then and didn't seem to care. What a shame, even if we were 1 minute over which we were't we could have been allowed to have our drink surely.
As it worked out we were dressed and outside the building with 6 minutes to spare.
The whole point of going to the Spa in the first place was undone and made us very angry. The place is too clinical, has limited falcilites and they need to train their staff with a liitle customer service after all it was not a BMW production line!
We stayed in the Hotel Romance across the road which was lovely, and which is why we chose the Castle Spa. We would return to the hotel but find differant Spa falcilites next time.

I made the trek out to Karlovy Vary by myself while my husband was in meetings. By the way, you don't need to pay some overpriced tour company to take you out there. I took the RegioJet bus (6 euro each way), which was very punctual, clean, and convenient.
I booked the 3 hour "Wellness Superior" program through the concierge at my hotel in Prague. The only little thing was finding the spa after getting off the bus. It wasn't too hard but make sure you know the name in Czech so you can get pointed in the right direction (Zamecke Lazne) or perhaps take a taxi.
The spa was very clean and the staff was very sweet (typical of Czech people in my experience, they are reserved but as soon as you smile at them, they smile back and are super helpful and kind).
The place has a bit of a sterile, medical kind of feel to it. But I guess that's because lots of people come to Karlovy Vary for healing.
Overall I really enjoyed the experience. It was super relaxing.
The massage was excellent, albeit short and again, medical feeling.
I indulged in the 2 different saunas, getting into the large hot spring pool in between.
I loved the freezing cold foot bath and I got the mineral bath as well. I'm not sure what's the difference between the mineral bath (you sit in a bathtub in a little enclosed area for exactly 15 minutes) and the large pool. But I guess it doesn't really matter.
When I signed up for the 3-hour program I was wondering how I would kill 3 hours of time (typical stressed-out entrepreneur thinking I guess). But in the end, I became so relaxed I ended up just spacing out while soaking in the water or lounging on a chaise. I would go back!

Dear Jimibell,
thank you indeed for your positive feedback and valuable information for future visitors travelling from Prague. Your observation regarding the sterility of the spa is perfectly correct in that we cater for visitors requesting wellness/relaxation programs and medical treatment programs. The mineral bath contains a higher percentage of mineral water than the large pool and is of course presented in a private room and supervised by a professional.
It is a pleasure to read that you found our establishment relaxing and beneficial, as this is what we strive to achieve.
We look forward to welcoming you to Zamecke Lazne (Castle Spa) again to appreciate the benefits of original, thermal mineral water spa treatment and relaxation, from Karlovy Vary.
