This gallery consists of two floors in the dungeon-like basement of the castle in Cesky Krumlov. The modern art sculptures are unique, and they are accompanied by the artists interpretation of his own work, which expresses the years of communist repression. There are also three paintings, stark and expressive as well, and there is an exhibit of modern ceramic sculpture by other artists. Not for everyone, but for those interested in superb modern art expressing the repression of communist years, this is definitely worth the time and minimal cost.

Intellectually stimulating. Would like to have read a little more on the artist. There was a nice description on the exhibit with the long row of suitcases.

I pride myself on not being disturbed easily but this art installation truly disturbed me and two weeks on, I'm still thinking about it. I think that is probably the sign of a successful art installation! His work is unlike anything I've ever seen. Most pieces appeared to be for sale as well. The price of entry was inexpensive. If you are after something different, give this a try.

We spent a lot of time in this unusual gallery. Very interesting. Just being in the bowels of the castle was intriguing too!

The fact that this was in the lower level of the castle made it exciting. However the exhibits were a disappointment.

Surrealist exhibition of Miroslav Páral deep in the cellars of Cesky Krumlov castle. Quite a lot of exhibited pieces, for sale. Lots of steps up and down.

For anyone with a passion for art, architecture and mystery, you must not miss the Mirislav Paral Gallery! I was fortunate to stay in Český Krumlov for a month, and thought I had experienced all of Český’s highlights, but this gallery, situated in the deep, dark bowels of the castle, was an exquisite surprise.
Not only can you see the moving and expressive figurative sculptures and drawings of Czech artist Mirislav Paral, you can also explore the circuitous stone catacombs upon which the castle was built over the centuries. All this with a background of enchanting music!
Paral’s sculptures are beautifully placed throughout the many underground rooms, lit dimly, accentuating the messages and symbolism in his dark, yet whimsical work. Paral’s life has spanned the Communist occupation of the Czech Republic through the post-Velvet Revolution era, and his work speaks deeply of this pivotal transition.
So step off the crowded and beaten tourist path, and experience the raw, hidden underbelly of Český Krumlov!

En route to the castle we saw a sign for an “underground city.” Naturally we had to detour. It was actually an exhibit for a single, very angsty artist, Miroslav Pirál, who specialized in bronze sculptures. The creepy setting was perfect for his morbid art. But the descriptions, thankfully available in English, were very clear and meaningful. He spoke of learning about “empty suitcases” left behind from murdered Jews, of how Czech people turned inward to their TV’s, alcohol, and cabins in the woods to deny to themselves the oppression of Soviet rule. And he shared about the horrors of free reign, post-Communism including the advancement of the sex industry and loss of job security – among other things – when the Soviets left. It was truly moving.
