About
Moldavites are the only precious stones in the world created in a meteorite impact 15 million years ago. The meteorite fell into today's Germany, but the moldavites are to found in South Bohemian region only. The exhibition of the museum tells you the whole story of meteorites, their role in planet formation, influence they had on the evolution of life and the hazard they represent to human kind today. The exposition is build as futuristic and interactive environment, funny and educative at the same time - it is more a "thing to do", than a "thing to see"... The exhibition is made completely trilingual, incl. the movie (Czech, English, German). All texts are provided in 5 more languages. Open everyday from 10 to 18.

We stayed in the rooms above the museum, so got to visit for free. Fun and quirky! Found out something new. These stones are extra terrestrial, so cool! I ended up buying myself a ring, to commemorate our 40th wedding anniversary, as well as lovely pendants for our daughters. Worth the visit. Great interactive displays.

We didn't visit the museum but we were recommended to check the gift shop as we wanted to buy a Moldavite pendant to take home as a souvenir. There are quite a few jewellery shops in Cesky Krumlov and it can get a bit overwhelming and confusing if you are looking to purchase Moldavite.

The ladies in the gift shop were really friendly and showed us pendants and unmounted Moldavite stones. The prices were very reasonable compared to the jewellery shops and we even got signed and stamped certificates of authenticity so we were very happy with our purchase.

We discovered this small museum thanks to Geocaching! There is an "earthcache' based on information available inside. There was a discounted rate for students but the attendant helpfully pointed out that a family ticket was the most cost effective option for our group .
I was quite fascinated by the whole
Moldavite (Czech: Vltavín) thing.... basically it is a forest green, olive green or blue greenish vitreous silica projectile rock formed by a meteorite impact in southern Germany (Nördlinger Ries Crater) that occurred about 15 million years ago. A kind of naturally occurring glass in a very small area of the world .
If you are interested in rocks and geology then this is a must with lovely displays and an informative video in several languages . The interactive 'throw a meteorite' part was not working on our visit .If you are the family members tagging along then it is a reprieve from the heat , a sit down for the film and there is a free toilet inside ! 45 mins is adequate .

My boyfriend and I visited the Moldavite/Vltavin museum on a day trip to Cesky Krumlov. We were so surprised at how close the museum is in the city center, its a 1 min walk from the town square. I found the museum very informative, and interesting, as others have mentioned it is small, but packed with really important information! I enjoyed learning more about Moldavite because I didn't know much about the stone, whereas my boyfriend is a gemstone collector, and his favourite being moldavite, he knew alot of the information, as it was one of the main reasons he wanted to visit the Czech Republic. The museum has a great moldavite collection, especially the ones in glass cases, they are some wonderful pieces! When you go down the steps, its interesting because the decor and darkness makes you feel like your actually in a mine! Also there is a short 10 minute video they will play for you, and they offer it in different languages which is nice. Overall a nice attraction, especially if you are interested in gemstones, extractions and where they come from, and the history of Moldavite. P.S if you want to purchase uncut pieces, or even jewelry, shop around, there are much cheaper shops around the museum. The city center in Cesky Krumlov has alot more moldavite in their shops than shops in Prague, which mostly feature garnet in their jewelry shops.

We just loved it: a unique story of the moldavite mineral told in a modern and enjoyable exposition. We learned a lot, relaxed gazing at the green magical stones and had a lot of fun with the simulator and the kids game.

The museum is located close to main city square. The staff was friendly. The museum itself and moldavites are very interesting and nice. I would give 5 stars but one of the attraction didn't work. Everything ok, nice clean and for good price. You should definitely try a visit.

I read a lot about this place before going to cesky krumlov and actually invested lot of time to even visit the place, but sad to say that its not worth that much effort. This is a small museum which is showcasing variousc moldavites. It also had lot of moldavite jewelleries.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights in this museum hotel. The room # 3 we stayed in is quite spacious and clean, the bathroom is small. It has basic kitchen facilities and a microwave and small fridge. There’s no air conditioning but there is a fan provided. The gothic structure in the room is quite beautiful. The hotel provides breakfast to your room at a cost of 5 euros for continental and 7 euros for hot breakfast for each guest. We did sleep well apart from the church bell that run every hour until midnight but It added a feeling of being in a very especial place, which it is. Entrance to the museum is free for guests. The museum is very interesting and educative and I learned something I didn’t know. A must visit if you’re in Cesky Krumlov.
