Views on a whole city worth climbing this tower! It may appear tiring at first glance but believe me when you get there, you wouldn't regret! Price is 40 czk for an adult and you pay on the top. You can also borrow binoculars for 10 czk and buy nice postcards!

If you like getting a bird's eye view, this is a great climb. My kids would have thought the tower interior was really cool Be warned that it's very steep in places and sometimes extremely narrow. The fee is a mere 30 crowns, but the good thing is if you start up and find it's too difficult, you can just turn around. You don't pay until you get to the top. On a clear day you'll have a overview of the town and the surrounding countryside. They also had the cheapest postcards (5 crowns) for sale at the top.

For a small fee one can climb the tower to enjoy the panorama over Klatovy, also a small museum of torture instruments is housed in the tower as it once had been used as prison and torture room (which we did not visit as such is not our cup of tea). “Cerna vez”is a dominant sight in the city: 81 meters high construction, finished in 1557 (Italian architect Antonio da Sola). On the top is copper dome-roof with mirradors. It houses one of the biggest bells in Bohemia, called “Vondra” and later Bárta. Six floors and no less than 256 steps lead up the gallery. First floor was the city torture-room. Untill 1962 a towerkeeper served at the tower. He resided in the tower top flat and one of his duties was to blow the signature tune at night-time in all directions. Due to several fires the tower got a dark coloration, hence it was named black. In 1559 a rennaisance city hall was built aside. The tower clock made 1855 by Czech constructor and inventor Josef Bozek in. (designer and manufacturer of the first steam-car and steam-boat in Czechia). In its vicinity is the baroque church of the Virgin‘s Immaculate Conception and St. Ignatius with unique catacombs.

The 220 steps I climbed non-stop made me feel young on the day I turned 80. Try it oldies, it helps.

My husband and I went for one night --- we were on our way to Prague from Saltzburg and took the LOCAL train by mistake! But- oh- what a great little town we stopped in for the night. A Budweiser Beer Festival was happening the next day- lucky to see that as well!

I visited a lot of towers all around the Czech Republic and sometimes it was really difficult to climb up the narrow and steep steps. Climb up stairs to Black Tower it was a piece of cake. They were not mostly narrow and nowhere were low ceilings. They sell tickets on the top of the tower (30,- CZK per adult). They offer there very nice postcards of ČB and other beautiful places from nearby area.

As I'm from České Budějovice I have to climb this tower at least 4 times in a year. I love taking my friends up to it and showing the town from above. The views are beautiful and my friends have many possibilities to learn about the town and surroundings.
It's a bit challenging to get up but it's worth it. You'll be surprised and pleased. But mainly, you'll see how the city was build. The 'aerial' view is really spectatular.

When we are in Europe we like to climb anything we can find. You get a little exercise and usually some awesome views. Cerna vez gave us both. We stumbled apon it while looking for something else. The small entry fee was well worth it. As with most towers in Europe, the stairs are often uneven and tricky, and the Black Tower falls under the “harder than most” category in this regard. But if you are up for it, it will be worth the climb.

It's worthy for the price (30 crown cz=1,20€) and the sight once you reach the top, but of course it takes you few minutes to do all the steps and only 5 bells can be seen on the route. On the other hand there's not much to visit in C. Budejovice

Should you visit Ceske Budejovice, this is really a must see (or should I say: must climb?) building! It's a 72 meters high 16th century tower, with five huge bells (weighing from 160kg to 3,5 tons) that were once used by the guard, who once lived in the tower with his family, to alarm the firefighters in case of a fire in town. Once you reach the top of it (I died a little on the way up), you will be rewarded with a beautiful 360 view on the city. And if you know where to look, you can even spot Hluboka Castle in the distance.
The entrance fee is only 30 CZK and you pay it when you reach the top of the tower.

Přeji příjemnou cestu i pobyt zde.
