- pluto1820 contributionsDay trip FathalaWent with a local tour company Omi tours I found on internet . A great day out especially enjoyed the ferry crossing . You see the real West Africa on this trip . The park itself is very interesting though small .The guides are very keen to give you a good time . It may not be up to the standards or size of the big parks of eastern and southern Africa but you do get to see zebras giraffe and a rhinoceros as well as antelope and warthogs . The locals here are trying to do something with the limited resources that they have and they give the tourist an excellent day out . It's ideal for kids and I would urge anyone staying on the Gambian coast to take this trip and give the local tour guides a chance . It's a well known tourist trip so the whole area is set up for them you will not feel unsafe or intimidated in any way ..... that goes for the whole of GambiaVisited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 12, 2024
- ThijsVlissingen, The Netherlands1 contributionBeautiful park!It is a beautiful park, all the animals mentioned were spotted! Went on a day tour from Gambia Kololi. Local Algie (220-7692310) took us. He speaks good English and understandably knows a lot about the area, highly recommended! - Patty16 contributionsMy day @ Fathala ReserveIt was a very nice trip with Arch Tours. First we got on the ferry which was an adventure in itself. Our guide told knew a lot about the history and could tell us everything about the fort. At the wildpark we went on an open jeep and saw several antilopes, giraffes and even a rhinoceros. And monkey’s off course. Lot’s of monkeys.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten February 18, 2024
- Sheila A16 contributionsWorth staying! We did a 3 night stay at Fathala and had a great time. It is not really a wildlife park but a pretty amazing safari park. There are no enclosures so the animals are free to roam. The accommodation was in a glorified tent but it was really comfortable. Huge bed, air con, a bath inside and an outdoor shower. As the temperature was well into the 30's the outdoor shower was lovely! We had half board and found the food very good. There is a small swimming pool which was good to cool down in. The seating area all looks out onto a watering hole so you can see the animals coming in for a drink and at night time it is lit so great to watch. We went on a jeep tour and saw lots of animals including 'Kevin' the rhino and a number of giraffes. We also went on a walk which was very interesting, more of a stroll but still enjoyable. The guides try really hard and are very friendly. The bird life is pretty amazing too. This place is quite international so the standard is quite high compared to many Senegal places.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 21, 2024
- Sue HCrowthorne, United Kingdom22 contributionsChristmas at FathalaWe spent an amazing 3 days over Christmas here and can't recommend it enough. The safari tents are really luxurious complete with fridge, kettle, mossie net, seating and a fully plumbed bathroom with outside showers which were a novelty. It even had air conditioning. The staff and guides were fantastic, couldn't do enough for us and the food was lovely. We saw lots of wildlife on 3 different safaris in a jeep, on foot and on a pirogue boat down the river. There were also lots of wildlife visitors just outside our tent and at the lodge watering hole.Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 31, 2024
- Medoune D1 contributionAn unforgettable day in FathalaWe went to visit the reserve as a family in November 2024. We were able to walk with the lions for an hour in the company of very professional guides who are attentive to the smallest details, who take the precaution, before the visit, to brief you at length on the attitudes to avoid, before getting rid of prohibited fireworks. An unforgettable experience especially with family with majestic but well-trained felines. We then rented a 4x4 for a safari of about 1h30 to walk the tracks of the abundant forest at this time of year to find zebras, deer, giraffes, white rhinos and warthogs in their natural habitat. The safari is even more impressive especially when it is carried out in the company of qualified guides who give you strength details about the plant and animal species present on the reserve. An experiment to be done at least once in one’s life, the only downside being the very high rates that would benefit from being reviewed to allow better accessibility.Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 4, 2025

We had a day trip from Gambia to Fathala Reserve for £95 each and had very high expectations about this visit. However, if you want to see the animals you won't see many. We saw antelopes, zebras, giraffes, wild pigs, a crocodile and some huge turtles. I think a good European zoo for a fraction of price will give you the opportunity to enjoy much more animals. The only experience which was truly unique was a short walk with lions. Maybe if you go there with no expectations whatsoever you will be thrilled otherwise you are left disappointed.

Dear Pippy,
Thank you for your review.
Fathala is a wildlife reserve, and not a zoo. Our animals are not in enclosures to been seen for your convenience – they roam freely on 2000 hectares of land.
The price you paid for your trip is through a 3rd party tour operator and we unfortunately have no control over the rate they charge. When booking directly through us we are able to offer any current specials.
We hope to welcome you back at Fathala again in the future.
Kind Regards
Fathala Management.

Ignoring the ethical hot potato surrounding animal encounters, purely as an experience, this was very enjoyable. It’s well organised and has good, clean, facilities including toilets and an eating area. We didn’t do the lion walk however the trip around the reserve took about 1.5 hours during which we saw all of the main animals that they have. We had two young children (5&8) and they coped easily with it. Its obviously not on the scale of the large southern African safari’s and those who consider themselves safari veterans might be underwhelmed however as a day out from The Gambia, it was very pleasant.

One of the best things about Fathala game reserve is the ferry trip where you see Gambia in the raw and not to be missed.
After leaving the ferry you go through passport control which is a nightmare and expect lots of form filling.
Then if a long drive to the game reserve.
It was our second visit from two years ago and nothing had changed one rhino few zebra, counted four giraffe , water buffalo ,wart hogs and lots of antelope type animals.
The guide did his best to make it interesting with what he had.
At time of writing you need your covid pass and passport
Oh Senegal is not the cleanest place
We paid £72 through the holiday rep but a am sure you can get it cheaper
For a day out it's enjoyable just don't expect to see too much
Walking with the lions is extra
We have been twice so it can't be too bad

We booked through Tui excursions this review has no reflection on them.
We arrived at the reserve where we had refreshments before boarding the 20 plus seater truck to take as on safari. We were warned that we might see lots or nothing plus the warnings about not getting off the truck.
We did see Antelopes,Rhino,Monkeys, Warthogs and Giraffes.
The driver seemed very keen we have a closer experience of the giraffes so we went off track it was very bumpy.
The truck hit a tree ripping a huge section of the roof off it just missed a lady sat on the offside. Many discussions then took place we were well and truly wedged in. We were told to get off and asked to stand in a grassland area. This is the point were we realise we are on the wrong side of a metal fence with wild safari animals wandering freely.
The driver and guide have no tranquilizer gun,no machete,no plan b and no radio control to base.We spent a terrified hour wandering what might turn the corner before being told as a group that we needed to walk back to the track area where a bus would be sent.
Many other buses would pass us part full that would have taken us to safety but there was no question of that happening.
It was the most terrifying hour of my entire life this place is an accident waiting to happen and needs to tighten its safety up.

The simple walk with the lions which could be very pleasant turns into a ridiculous tour where the objective is to take photos and films. They even force the lion to show his teeth by hitting him on the head and he actually has marks. Very reserved opinion.

Really saddened to see some of the negative reviews on here, so thought I’d pass on our thoughts following a visit from The Gambia. We spent a wonderful day with a hugely informative and knowledgable locally based guide.
We managed to see all of the animals bar the giraffes which we heard but kept missing (but nice excuse to return) and some amazing bird life including close up views of a Palm Vulture. After much soul searching and thoughts we did the lion walk and so glad we did, the rangers were superb, when asked about the use of the sticks they spent time explaining why and how they were used with the Cubs from an early age and for us the rangers appeared to love and respect the big cats like their own family and were very eager to impart their knowledge of them to visitors, the rangers were very strict with the visitors interactions in order to not stress the cars and at one point one cat just wanted a roll about and snooze so we had to wait till they were ready to move again. We left feeling like we had been given a very special insight into the lives of the lion and how important it is to ensure they’re place within the African environment. I’d also like to say a big well done to the venue for the education and promotion of young female guides too (one of which we had leading us) brilliant to see and I hope the reserve is able to continue its fantastic work

We saw antelopes (lots of), zebras, giraffes, wart hogs, buffaloes and Kevin the rhino. It’s important to Remember that reserve is 6000 acres (not that we covered all this space) and the animals are free to roam and will hide in the heat, so we were lucky to see what we did I think.
It is quite expensive for what it is but it’s worth doing. Would be nice if you could see the lions as part of the ticket price and only pay for the lion walk separately but this isn’t an option

We visited Fathala as a day trip from The Gambia and we were not disappointed. On arrival at the reception area I was impressed with the facilities available including very clean toilets, a small shop and plenty of shaded seating. We had arrived in a 4 wheel drive, open topped jeep so just collected a guide at the entrance who accompanied us round the enclosed reserve. Our guide was Rama and she was absolutely fantastic. She directed our driver to all the best sites to try and spot the animals - including Kevin the rhino who proved a bit elusive at first. As well as being eagle eyed in spotting the animals Rama was also a font of all knowledge about Fathala. We spoke about breeding programmes, poachers, how the animals are cared for and fed and park maintenance. We were out in the park for nearly 2 hours and it was just a fantastic experience that I would happily recommend. We chose not to join a lion walk so can’t comment on that.

Too expensive 38 euros to walk 20 minutes behind 2 Lions bred by man since birth. That's the price for a misleading photo. Certainly very lucrative for its rich owner, but by no means for the Senegalese staff very low paid. It's a shame. I regret the visit. FYI also the donkeys of the entrance are the food of the lions, 2 per day, I just hope they are killed before 😱.

If you’ve never walked with lions before, then this could definitely be your thing! For me, this was my second time doing this activity (the first was in Zimbabwe) and this particular Lion Walk felt like more of a posed photoshoot than a wildlife experience — nothing like the one I’d done previously, which was far more “real”. We still enjoyed it, however!
Note there’s a discount if you do the safari plus the lion walk. And make sure to read the Dos and Donts on their website before heading in, as it’s super helpful and the lion guides don’t tell you everything until the last minute (eg don’t wear baggy clothes). Lockers are available for your valuables as you can’t take most things on the walk with you.
The safari was a tad boring and disappointing too — we saw giraffes, warthogs, an antelope, some birds, a monitor lizard, and a couple of monkeys. We also got absolutely covered in grasses during the safari and there were nasty bugs everywhere all over us.
For some reason I also started sneezing the second I got into the park and didn’t stop until we left — I noticed others were suffering also and I’ve never had my allergies flare up so quickly or so brutally!

Hi, I would like to visit park to see safari without walking the lions ,which I find totally disgusting (it isn't natural for lions to be me kept through the people, they must me given drugs snd this is nothing but animal abuse though). I suppose they are canned and beaten to be scared of humans.
Is it possibul to go on safari not supporting lion walks t the same time?

hi there,
I am planing to visit soon but was wondering if you have a breading program for the lions or are all cubs imported from South Africa? Is this the same for the other animals? What veterinary care do you have for the animals?
Thanks for your response,

Hallo.

Hi
I am in Senegal staying at Yoff in December and would like to visit the Fathala reserve for Game Drive and Lion Walk for one day. Does anyone know of any companies in Senegal who arrange this trip, with maybe staying in budget accommodation the night before? Alternatively any car hire companies that do not have the 100km limit on them!
Many thanks.

Hi booked through Arc tours in The Gambia, they handle all the logistics, I was picked up from fajara then we headed to Banjul to take the ferry, another vehicle was waiting to take us at the other end, we took that to Fathala reserve. Snacks and lunch was provided including entrance to fathala and the guide so we didn’t have to worry about that.Everything cost me about 85 pounds but if you want to do the lion walk it will cost you an additional amount, I think that was 25 pounds extra

hi can you tell me the cost of your trip from gambia to fathala park ,and your route plz
Written July 30, 2018
Hi,
Fathala is located pretty much right on the border, we had a rental car in Senegal and to us the biggest expense was getting a visa. But citizens of many countries don't need any visa at all, so it could be free for you. If you drive a rental car, you need to stop at the border and do some paper work on the Gambian side. It takes a few minutes and as far as I remember, we didn't have to pay any extra for that. But we've also seen a lot of buses and taxies taking tourists across the board, since the distance is minimal, it can't be expensive. Visiting Fathala - if you have your own (or rental) 4x4, you just pay entrance fee, something about $50 per person. If you don't have a car, you'll need to rent one, that's another $50. The highlight of the park is the lion walk.
So if you're thinking about a day trip for 2, it will likely cost you around $200.
