This charming small museum explains the very important part that Botwood played in the 1930s era of transatlantic flying boats like the famous Boeing 314 clipper aircraft. These giants were flying hotels that provided unique experiences for those lucky enough to travel across the Atlantic. Newfoundland has an extremely rich history in aviation and most Canadians know very little about it. Kudos to the museum for getting this all together.
As a side note we knew we would be driving near Botwood but the museum would be closed so I emailed ahead and a special personal tour was set up just for us. It was given by Mr. Ev Elliott, the archivist of the museum so a big thank you to Ev for taking the time to explain the exhibits to us.

The museum had unfortunately closed for the season when we paid Botwood a visit in September, but there were several outdoor elements that helped us get a sense of the history here. They are located right on the ramp where the flying boats could move from the water to the land. They have an example of the Catalina, one of WWII's truly important fighting aircraft. The best outdoor element is the gigantic mural on the side of the building which shows one of large flying boats that used to land here. Sad we didn't get to see the inside, but thanks to their outdoor displays, we got a real sense of the place.

I visited the museum with my boyfriend, who actually grew up in the town of Botwood. Surprisingly, he had never seen the museum himself.
We saw pictures of his relatives who were in the Navy and quite a bit more than anticipated regarding the small town.
Interesting to know that the first transatlantic flight was flown into Botwood!
The young girl who took our admission wasn't too eager to show us much and actually couldn't answer a simple question about the sea plane outside of the museum, but we did enjoy ourselves thoroughly. It took us about an hour to see all the exhibits in the old building, quite the history this place has! The very first time I have seen, in person, a real vintage hair perming machine (scary!) lol!
A must see for visitors...a real little gem!
Make sure you come on a decent day as to walk out on the island before or after your tour!

Our visit here seemed like a bonus being able to learn this very interesting piece of aviation history that is almost forgotten now. The young staff were keen and well informed (and perhaps a bit bored). Displays were very good and informative.

To discover that this small out of the way place is the first international airport of Canada was simply amazing. The museum is small but provides a 20 minute movie, probably filmed in the 30's, that tells the story of how the area was developed to service the large passenger boat planes that flew the Atlantic in the late 1930's. For $5 it is worth the knowledge gained.

This is across the parking lot from the Botwood Heritage Centre. Quite interesting display of the time when the flying boats made Botwood (apparently) a household name.
I had no idea they used Botwood as a trans-Atlantic stop, nor how luxurious flying was back then (sigh!). Well worth a visit

Stayed in Botwood for the night and visited the museum especially with the Catalinas on display and the information about them. Botwood also had a lot of murals on buildings.

We enjoy the visit of this small museum. We learned a lot on the first commercial Atlantic flights which were made with flyingboats from Botwood NL I wished they would have kept a replica of these giant Boeing aircraft. There is nothing left of this historical site except for the Bay.

nice place to visit and get some good history facts about the wars of the past and the Flying Boat Air Carrier.
