The place is cool, several times was there. quiet and calm, and the most important thing is that Gandzasar is located in the territory of Artsakh (Armenia) and not Azerbadzhyan.

It is definitely a blessed place and a must visit but it is not in Azerbaijan. There is no way to reach it through Azerbaijan.
It is in the independent Armenian Nagorno Karabakh Republic. Hopefully TripAdvisor will correct the location info.

Gandzasar monastery is a 10th to 13th century Armenian monastery situated in the Mardakert district of Artsakh Republic (Armenia). The monastery holds relics believed to belong to St. John the Baptist and his father St Zechariah. Gandzasar is now the seat of the Archbishop of Artsakh.
Recently a branch of Yerevan Matenadaran has been located here and holds most of Artsakh manuscripts.
About 70km from Stepanakert. The road is ok for any sedan.
Once you are there, don't miss the well known loin-mountain located below. You need to drive left (while straight takes you to Monastery) to get there. Keep your eye on road marks...
Plan half day for your trip. Also check out the map, you may combine your trip to Dadivank as well.

Gandzasar is a beautiful and well-preserved monastery in the green mountains of Artsakh. The church itself is beautiful and ornate and the surrounding mountain scenery is unbeatable. Having a guide explain the history of the monastery and point out all the artistic and architectural features of the building made it all the more worthwhile. Don't miss Gandzasar if you visit Artsakh!

The most visited monastery in Artsakh, with remains of many unique rock carvings and arthitecture.
In the outer wall, there are still remains of helicopter rockets what was shoot on the monastery during the war. It survived many horrible events of histroy, and serves as a place where people gather to pray and ask for a better world.
Must see!

It was a short drive last week from Khankendi to see the Gandzasar Monastery near Vank in the Mardakert district. It’s a monastery that is almost 800 years old, wonderful architecture and claims to hold relics of St John the Baptist. The views of the surrounding area are magnificent as well and if you plan right you can do this and Dadivank in the same day and really be in awe.

This is a beautiful medieval monastery of importance in showing the presence of Armenians in this region back in the fifth century. The architecture is interesting and best appreciated by use of a good guide or at least guidebook. The drive from Stepanakert of over an hour is itself wonderful as the region is so lush with dense forested mountains.

"Gandzasar" means treasure mountain or hilltop treasure in Armenian. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Artsakh.
