Are you still thinking that if youโve seen one monastery youโve seen them all? Not true, go to all of them, enjoy each historical place as you walk through history and be amazed.

If you are in this region don't miss this monastery. The monastery was built in 936 AD by Princess Sephia of Syunik.
There is a drinkable water spring you should see/drink...
The only issue is the road that is in a bad shape. You can get there only with SUV. Or by walk... about 1.5km, but it really worth it to see. Monastery has some unique stones with specific writings/drawings...
Of the surviving wall paintings, one of Jesus Christ is on the altar wall. Another notable painting in the church is of Mother Mary on the northern annexed wall, which is said to be a masterpiece of the late Middle Ages in Armenia. The surfaces of the pendentives have carved images of the evangelists.

You will never think that after crossing the cliffs and gorges this magnificent 10th century monastery will rise up, which is not only standing but also functioning and has a modest spiritual shepherd you can convince once again, that faith and church will remain as long as there is an Armenian.

The way to the monastery is the old Vayk-Jermuk road, along the Arpa river. Gndevank was founded in the 10th century by the Syunik princess Sophia. He was destined for the ravens of the gorge and named after one of them, Supana Gndun. Monks still live there, we met Stephanos and felt like going back many years ago when life was simpler.

Gnevank Monastery has a very special atmosthere. Set in a deep canyon it can be reached either by road from the south (long and bumpy, but great scenery), by a steep footpath from the village above or by a hike on the blocked road from the Jermuk reservoir. If you have time, try the last approach, we loved the canyon and even saw wild ibax. Monks tend the gardens around around the church and along side are some beautiful gravestones. The church is small but features perfect proportions and some very fine chatchkars.

We stayed at Jermuk and from Jermuk it took us around an hour. We were driving on our own so we used google maps. At first the it took us through a military route which had no entry so we had to detour which then took us an hour because the road to get there was so bad. It had alot of pot holes and boulders fallen from the mountains. You wont find any people along the way. This could also probably be because we traveled during December and not many tourists around that time. Once we reached there it was quite dry and the trees leaves were shed and nobody was around. We couldn't go in the monastery as it was locked. The place is obviously beautiful but i wouldn't recommend going there during the winter.

I have been only once in this place, but it was enough to fall in love with this amazing place. This place is really mystical, not just officially religious place and you feel the energy of this place. Some nice people serve in this monastery or actually they came from close churches.

To get to this monastery goes through old road which is in very bad shape or through shortcut trough the canyon's narrow roads. Either way is dangerous however the destination's views are rewarding. It is worth seeing. A medieval monastery hidden in the mountains.
