Compared to Transfagarasn road the asphalt here is simply amazing. There are no holes, no dirt or oil. The view is incredible and if you go with the motorcycle as i did you will put the day as "one of your best day on the bike". A lot of curves and so many stops where you can enjoy the nature.

The "new" renovated road is one of the most side seeing roads in Romania even better than the last "king of the roads" aka Transfagarasan.
On the road you can have a local snack from some of the numerous places along the way, some traditionally dishes and fruit of the season sold by local farmers. The road is a long one and not so easy for drivers. Take breaks for pictures and snack it will help get rid of fatigue.

Yeah, I missed it. I've been trying to organize this trip for years and now I've succeeded. Made in mid-July, where everywhere was 40°, here I found only 15, wonderful route, now fully guardrail protected, fun and not easy. Yes, it was worth the pen! From Sebes to Obàrsia Lotrului, to Rànca, a beautiful journey.

Beautiful drive, spectacular scenery, excellent road. In my opinion, equally as good as the Transfagarasan...
We drove it on a Friday and left Sebes at about 0930. There was very little traffic in either direction which was quite surprising. A few groups of motorcyclists. We took about 5 hours to get to our Horezu where we were staying but that included a lot of stops for photographs and just looking.
The road is in excellent condition..there is about 200 metres of unsealed road at one point, but it is also in good condition. It's a very easy drive and the traffic we saw was all driving safely.
I'm glad we came all this way to do the drive of a lifetimes.

A wonderful travel on the King's Road which is another name for Transalpina, with 148 km through 4 counties, really so spectacular views. We stopped few times to take great photos on the top of mountains. The road was reabilitated few times, now looks great and safe to travel 3 hours. For us was a great and wonderful experience to see it and travel for first time here.

The Transalpina was one of the reasons that pushed the group of Harley riders to travel all the kilometers to get closer to Transylvania. Definitely unique with landscapes and views that would have deserved a photo after every hairpin bend.
Traveled from north to south starting from Sebes to arrive in Novaci.
Absolutely worth doing

Lets assume, you are in Sebes , in the morning of a bright sunshine summer morning ... clear skies and wondering what should you do? ...
Think no more , get in the car or get on your bike and drive the Transalpina road ... "the Road of the King" ... why?
I will not spoil it , just take a look at the pics attached to this review.
Road is in very good condition, safe to drive in the summer months , if you are getting there during the week and not on week-ends it will not be crowded.
You drive through woods , passing lakes and spots where you can stop for pics, beverages and food...
Breath in the fresh mountain air at above 2000 m altitude ... stop for a while here and there ... take a thousand pics ... and drive on.
Get some souvenirs , check out the grazing herds of sheep - get a sheep stew at the sheepfold with some "Mamaliga" ... and drive ...
Stop again ... and be amazed by the views ahead of you, behind you , above you and bellow you ... and drive on ....
The road is very good, turns are very frequent , don't speed ... enjoy the ride.
It is an amazing road and definitely a must do when you are in the area.

Note that at the time I am writing this review, TripAdvisor
is listing the Transalpina Road in the wrong location. It is listed
in the Poiana Brasov area but the Transalpina Road
(named DN 67C - meaning National Road 67C) is between
Novaci and Sebes, more than 200km west of Poiana Brasov.

Transalpina is an old road but has just recently been paved (2009)
so for the most part the quality of the asphalt is perfect. Of all the
roads in Romania it reaches the highest altitude (2145m - 7037ft) in
what is called "Pasul Urdele".

The views from the road are extremely nice and you will want to make
several stops to take in those views. Fortunately, when we visited
(a weekday around the end of June 2012) the road was quite empty.
When this happens you will have plenty of time to take pictures
from your car. The drive itself is not easy there are many switchbacks
many of which over ascending terrain.

An added bonus was encountering two groups of donkeys on the road.
The first group were friendly and inquisitive and had no problem sticking
their head through the open car window. An unexpected and amazing
experience :).

On the downside, the last part of the road driving North
(approaching Sebes) was quite bad in quality. This seems temporary, the
asphalt has been broken apart on purpose in quite a few places probably
as part of on-going work for improving the quality of the road. That
being said this last part makes you stop every 100m and will
significantly increase the time it takes you to finish the drive.
Also, there are very few signs on the road, even on the most beautiful part.
For example, we haven't seen any sign informing us of the highest point.
So we used our GPS to get a sense of the altitude we were at.

If you do decide to do this drive (and I encourage you to) you can consider
complementing it with stops at the historically important Alba Iulia town,
the venue of the 1918 declaration of Union (and another attempt in 1600)
which defined Romania as we know it today. Close to Alba Iulia an
interesting place is Turda which has an amazing Salt Mine.

I did the Transfagarasan yesterday and today it was the Transalpina. How to choose which is best ? Let's just say they are both fabulous ! The Transalpina has longer more sweeping turns as opposed to U-turns. There are more sweeping views on the Transfagarasan but the Transalpina is probably prettier.

Whichever you choose you will not be disappointed !

We drove the Transalpina from South to North as part of or Romanian road trip. It is a fantastic drive offering spectacular views without being too challenging.

There are ample places to stop to admire the view and take photographs.

Surprisingly quiet for the time of year with minimal traffic

Would recommend including this in your route if at all possible.
