Lots of things to do here, from just staying near the lake at the restaurant, to going on hard trails to the mountain tops. Don't visit on weekends (includind Sunday) because it's extremely crowded. We arrived on Sunday at 3PM and there was a one hour traffic line to get here.

In July 2016 we drove the Transfagarasan from south to north and slept there for one night. Great views in all directions great summer hiking routes and great place to stop for few hours to have some lunch, photo session, open air rest in the summer.

We started our trip at Balea Lac from the Vidraru Dam. When you reach Capra waterfall, you really need to stop a moment to admire the beauty of the place and take a picture. After a couple of hours we reached Balea. Being in the middle of summer (July 16th) was full of vistors. I saw two brides who came... More

We visited yesterday with a tour from Smart Hostel in Sibiu. The Transfagaran Highway was the highlight of the trip for me, but the lake is beautiful well. There were still some patches of snow around the lake (July 7), so dress warm! There is good too eat by the lake: dried meats, cheese, pastries.

Great roads to and from the lake, very busy when we visited ( it was a National holiday ) and apparently, snow had only been cleared the previous week through the narrow mountain tunnel. Enjoyable.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. The lake is small and sits in a basin so there's not much of a view. I suppose in summer you could climb to a peak. But you get much better views from the Bucegi Plateau. The best part of Balea is the view of the mountains rising from the valley... More

We had a wonderful visit to Balea Lake on top of the mountain. WE got up the winding Mountain roads to the base of the Telecabina to the top to an elevation of 6000' Fully snow at the top and the view of the valley in the sunshine below was awesome. WE met a few Internationals on the ride up... More

We arrived to the location, to where the cable car station is. It started to snow and it was amazing The market was open. When we tried to go up the mountain, thy asked us for a minimum of 10 people. After half an hour, we reached with the cable car to the lake. However it was an amazing experience...!!!... More

Best mountains in Eastern Europe. 2500 m, glaciar cauldrons, they want to make a Yellowstone type of reservation there.

We visited during the spring. The lake was covered in snow but we enjoyed the stunning views! The bars/ hotels all seemed deserted but possibly because the main winter season is over? Good idea to take some food etc with you. We took the cable car on a Sunday (takes about 10 mins and costs 30Lei p/p each way). Watch... More
