The castle/fortification dominates the village of Aarburg and the river Aare. It is an impressive sight for everyone passing by car or train and well worth a visit! Be sure to take a guided tour to get the most of the history and anecdotes behind this construction, parts of which are almost a thousand year old. It is a historic buidling used today by the state and hence, it has little "original" historic decoration, it's really all about the construction and the stories behind it. For me as a Swiss, it was a revealing visit, which I enjoyed thoroughly! Impressed. Access is on foot via a steep stairway, and the visit involves climbing stairs. Guide is by a local, not necessarily speaking English. Cost 10 Chf. Access: Village of Aarburg by train, bus, or car, access to fortress on foot. Great view on the "Waage" a natural counter current phenomenon on the river Aare. Phantastic views from above!

Aarburg is a small city that is located on the border between cantons Aargau and Solothurn. it would have not been known to the tourists if there was no a huge castle on a rocky hill that dominates over the city and river Aare. If you go on the motorway number one that connects the official and financial capitals of Switzerland (Bern and Zurich), you will for sure should notice the eminent castle that was built in XII-XV centuries.

Super view! The splendid castle, the river, the ducks.. It wasn't a fully sunny day, but pretty enough for a walk along the river.

Medieval castle that is right next to the youngster prison! Walk up the little set of steps and enjoy the view from the hill next to the church.

We weren't able to take a tour inside, but walking uphill to the courtyard was still pretty cool. Great views as well.

Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to visit the castle (it’s open only on Saturdays from April to September), but we were able to walk up the stairs that lead to the church and enjoy the view over the river Aare. In addition, the walk alongside the river is also very enjoyable and offers the possibility to take a great picture of the medieval fort and the church.
