Easy walk for people interested in Industrial technology
Sep 2016 • Couples
A pleasant, easy walk from the east end of Pontneathvaughan village through woodlands alongside the deep and dangerous river. You can easily visit the Dinas Rock here . You can make it a circular walk if you cross the footbridge on the west end of the old works emerging in the Dinas Rock car park. The ruins are on the North bank of the river spread out over half a mile and all water powered from sluices fed by the weir which is an impressive sight in heavy weather. (It is possible to press on east along the path which is usually very muddy and the further you go the harder it gets.) The works closed before World War II
and were thoroughly cleaned and ruined to prevent danger. Waterwheel pits, leats, abandoned roofless buildings and blast walls can be seen and an abandoned mine level. Gunpowder raw materials, (saltpetre, sulphur and carbon) were wet ground, dried, and stored for transport along the old tramway (now the footpath) A very hazardous and dangerous process. It is an easy and enjoyable walk even if you are not interested in Industrial Archaeology at any time of year with lots of plants birds and the occasional fish leaping up the rapids. Mind the kids near the river!.

A good walk for history buffs
Jul 2016
This is a lovely walk with plenty of information being found about the gunpowder factory at the beginning of the walk in Pont Nedd Fechan.
