This natural canyon is full of gorgeous views from both sides, the canyon is steep as will your hike be if you hike down to the bottom. The river itself is not that impressive, it is pretty small, but the canyon is something to be admired. Hiking down to the bottom and back will give you a true appreciation of land, and the hike up will give your legs a workout! You will pass through this canyon if hiking the Quilotoa Loop. We really enjoyed having a picnic at the bottom before the strenuous hike back up.

Canon de Rio Toachi is located on the road beween Zumbahau and Quilotoa Crater. If you are in a bus or drivng too fast you can easily miss this delightful spot. A small parking lot and a few pine trees greet you, then a few steps down, and "wow". The views are spectacular and even if you are not steady on your legs you can still get a good close up view. The river cuts through very far below and extremely steep cliffs and "hoodoos" jut out of this canyon. Reputed to be 2600m. deep, it is deep and a wonderful place just to savour your mortality. The site is free for visitors.

Canyon of Toachi river is a long area because start in the Zumbahua area and finished close to the tropical area, when I make the hike from Chugchilan to Isinlivi I have chance to walk in the border of Toachi river and on the bottom of Toachi Canyon there are a lot of information above hikes in this area but I recommend to use a guide because you have chance to enjoy and know more

The Toachi River Canyon is a stopping point before reaching the Quilotoa Lagoon. The viewpoint is on the same road and is easily accessible.

This canyon was produced by the eruptions of the Quilotoa volcano creating a spectacular view from the highest point of the canyon. In its interior it crosses the Toachi river that goes towards the Ecuadorian coast.

The views are impressive and I recommend stopping before continuing to Quilotoa, entrance is free and there are plenty of photo ops. I personally liked the contrast of the green of the nearby mountains with the semi-arid that presents the canyon. And yes, there is a river, however, we could only hear the flow, and not see it.

If you go to Quilotoa stop, it will not take you long to appreciate the beauty of this place.

We parked up in a small car park at the top for viewing and photographs when driving around the Quilotoa Loop. Right on the side of the road no detour required. Dramatic scenery and walking if you wish to partake.

Beware the little boy who collects the 1$ car park fee will appear from nowhere, have your money ready!

We did a nice and easy hike on a short trail to get a impression of the canon. The scenery is real amazing and the environment very quiet. We walked alone for half an hour enjoying the landscapes.

This was part of a full day tour with Gray Line. We stopped for a while to take in the view, walk around and take pictures. You can walk quite close to the steep drops and out on a narrow ledge. I would love to hike along the ridge and down the river if time permitted.
Definitely a must stop - and there is no entrance fee.
