Located on the western end of Culeenup (also known as Mill Island), the mill buildings were built in 1846 by Joseph Cooper. The building has not had the easiest of histories.
Unfortunately joseph died before the mill was completed whilst he was on a trip to Fremantle, and the building was completed by his son. The mill seemed to have gone through a series of further problems with the sails that powered the mill destroyed by a bush fire in 1850. The mill was then converted to steam operation but was flooded in 1862 and the buildings were abandoned in 1865.
Fires later destroyed the staircase and then bricks were removed (supposedly for ‘other buildings’ although I have heard they were used to build bbqs). In 1930 some restoration work was carried out by Joseph’s grandson, but this was destroyed by another bushfire. You get the picture.

Coopers Mill is on an island not accessible by road. House boats tie up at the landing where there is a good jetty, a playground, bbq, toilets and grassed area. A short walk of about 100 metres and your at The Mill which started construction in 1843. Info boards tell the story of the mill and the industries that went on there. Two rivers enter the Mandurah Estuary here. A canoe trip down The Serpentine river is also pleasant to the mill. A great place to overnight in a houseboat or a daytrip in your powerboat with a salad and a barbie pack.
