Fantastic crater lake -
Sep 2019 • Solo
I found this place just by looking at a map, decided to ride up and see what is it all about. The ride to the lake was fantastic and then the cobble stone road leading to the lake was interesting to say the least! Upon arrival there is a $1 us entrance fee and a loop that goes around the whole lake with different vantage points. There is a school at the crater lake and the day I was visiting they school was practicing band music.. super fun to hang out with them.

Take a picnic and spend a few hours up here... !

A hidden gem!

If you happen to be in El Salvador looking for a new place to visit, please go to La Laguna de Alegria. It’s amazing. The water is a spectacular turquoise blue. The mountains surrounding it provide a great backdrop and contrast. We did not swim in the water because when we went the water had evaporated quite a bit because it was peak summer! (Very hot) But I do believe you can swim. It costs $1 per person and you can bring your own food and drinks.

Very interesting sulphur volcanic lake

Just outside Alegria, very interesting location to visit as an old volcanic area with sulphur water. Great views of the mountains around it.

Beautiful views

Beautiful views when going up the mountain and down into the large caldera. The Lake is shrinking, but a worthwhile trip.

Volcano crater

If you're in El Salvadore go see the volcanic creator at Alegria....fascinating in a Jurassic Park kinda way.

Don't eat at Cartegena in town though....the chicken is the worst ever and probably the dead fighting clocks they keep on the property.

The Carne Asada was good....

A wonderful lake in a volcanic crater

Take a walk all around this crater lake. It is a small lake, but most enchanting. Youth and young adults that we have taken there just delight in the fact that they are down inside a volcano. Older folks like it too.

Do not expect a lake to swim in
Apr 2016 • Couples
Lagoon for the high presence of minerals and no hotel facilities surrounding it, it is not to swim. I visited in summer and it was small, how ever it is said that it gets bigger and smaller depending on raining.

My suggestion is to visit Alegría Town, which is 500 mts from the entrance of the Lagoon. It is a very cozy town, where most of local people sell flowers, plants, orchids and other outside their own houses. You can find there ornament plants cheaper than in San Salvador city.

One thing you can enjoy in Alegría town, Lagoon and nearby places is great weather, with cool wind and fog. You can also have lunch in any of the restaurants in Alegría town.

Very small lake

The lake it self is nothing special. Just a blue lagoon that's drying out. The benefit is the clay from there. Good for facials and body scrubs you can find the market ladies selling you this same clay for a lot of money.

I am traveling on a motorbike and for driving there and from,( there are 3 different ways) is nice the villige is nice. I was there during low sayson and there where only 2 resaurants open, and stayed in a hospedaje whitout a name on the plaza, a dreen hause with a wall and steel fence around it and that was ok. The lake is nice to visit and the views from thr road going there are nice , the lake is just a green sulver stincking hole.
If je have to go here special by bus I should say leave it. If it's on the route ok. The paople where really friendly.

The lake itself is nothing
Dec 2014 • Solo
Understand that the lake, or more accurately, the Laguna, is nothing special. It's just a small patch of water in a crater. It makes for a decent photo if taken from above. However, the reason to visit is the walk to and from Alegria. You pass through lovely countryside, consisting of great views and coffee plantations, and will be able to give and receive smiles from locals along the way. There's a good shop by the laguna's entrance where you can buy snacks and drinks. You don't need a guide. The area and walk is extremely safe, and the laguna is easy to find by simply staying on the main track/road.
