Our driver took us to this Art Gallery. There was quite a selection, but much of the same. We found a painting that we much liked and were quoted USD$7000. We advised that our budget was firm at USD$1000 and were able to purchase the painting. On return to our homeland, we were disappointed to see that the same painting appeared in pictures of a Villa in Seminyak. Please note, prices are overinflated and you are not purchasing one-off pieces. Really disappointing 😒

This is a letter I wrote to the owner of this "gallery":
Dear Mr. Dewa Made Puja,
I was originally very excited to make purchases at your gallery, Dewa Putu Toris was the first one I went into in Ubud. The piece i was interested in was offered to me originally at asking price of $1100USD. I wasn't sure about it, so I decided to walk away. A very, very, dishonest and aggressive sales lady there kept pushing it on me. I decided to start the very long and time consuming inevitable task of "bargaining".
Finally, we "agreed" on $375, although I felt like I really didn't have a choice. I wanted to leave and everytime I walked away, I get pulled and harassed. (Note to travelers reading this: it's because they KNOW the next gallery is SO MUCH CHEAPER that they want to make sure you make the purchase before you go to the next gallery. OBVIOUSLY they don't care about you coming back or not.)
My experience at Dewa Putu Toris gets worse: after we rolled the painting, I was TOLD that I needed to tip the person who took 30 seconds to roll my painting up. Okay. Fine. But I bought 2 paintings-- one in Seminyak and one in Hanoi and no one ever asked me to tip the person rolling the canvas up for me. FINE. $2USD, not a big deal. Just being TOLD to do it, not cool.
Dewa Made Puja, while I believe art should be appreciated and a good piece should have the right commission, I am totally against people who just throws prices out just to cheat the nearest and dumbest person (me). I was floored when I walked into the next gallery, saw an almost EXACT (the sales rep at Dewa Putu Toris told me what I purchased was one of a kind and there isn't another one out there) painting by the same artist, same size, same coloring, same EVERYTHING, but the asking (which is the first first price; and in SE Asia means you should deduct 70% off of that), was $350!! The asking price at Dewa Putu Toris was $1100 and I paid $375! I think you should be ashamed of yourself and what you are selling. You should be selling ART, not the art of ripping off tourists. I felt so disgusted, and it left such a bad taste in my mouth that it ruined my trip.Getting ripped off on clothes, souvenirs, trinkets is a given. But art? It's just taboo.
You know, art should be appreciated, not used as a tool / outlet to cheat consumers. Had you been more honest with the pricing, I would've referred friends and tell my friends that write travel blogs about your gallery. But now, I have to, instead tell them about how dishonest this gallery is and what you're selling, is NOT originals or one of a kind. I will make sure all my friends and family and anyone I can reach out to, knows about the dishonest dealings in Dewa Putu Toris.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your review.
Firstly, we are so sorry about this situation. Yes, my staff asked you to bargain the price because some of our customers don't familiar with bargaining. However, our staff pushed you too much and we are sorry for that. We were gave her a punishment.
Secondly, the artist said that he only puts his paintings in our gallery. So, it's a new information for us and thank you for that. We will doublecheck about that.
Thirdly, about the tip. It's all about your sicenrity. If you don't mind you can give the a tip, but if you don't want, it doesn's matter. However, we may say thank you very much for gave our packer a tip, even it was only $2 but for them it was much money.
Thank you for your comment and it's good for evolution our service.
King regards,
Wedha Anggarayana

On a golfing tour to Bali, we were brought to this gallery by our tour guide. I thought I had struck a good deal when I bargained for 3 paintings at USD 1,100 for half the quoted priced, the salesperson rushed to charge my card. A few minutes later my friend got his paintings for a third of the quoted price. I felt cheated, but the deal was done.
My third friend liked a painting but left without buying - the next day the salesperson turned up at the hotel (through the tour guide) with the rolled and packed painting at sold it for a quater of the quoted price.
I was devastated by the fraud. I love art and have been to many galleries in Asia, but have never come across such cheats.

Visited this gallery when on 1 week holiday in Bali - it was among several that we visited and by far the best in terms of selection. Our local guide was hesitant bro bring us there as he said prices were higher than other places but it’s obvious that in Bali you get what you pay for. We arrived late at night but the place is apparently open 24/7 as owners stay in the same building. It was an ornate Balinese compound with many rooms of various types of paintings. Some looked reproduced and many were not to our liking but we managed to leave with 2 pieces that we liked. Will require some negotiation but owner was friendly.

Our driver took us to this wonderful art gallery on the way to Ubud and what was supposed to be a cursory look became an hour long visit that ended with the purchase of a beautiful painting by one of the old masters from Batuan. It is now hanging on my wall and bringing so much joy. Looking forward to visiting this gallery again on the next Bali trip!

I mean, Bali is all about haggling, if you can't do that, the place will charge you whatever they want on the day. I saw lots of comments about this - well, don't buy it if you can't get the price down or don't like the painting. If you like the painting, you will pay anything. In Europe, US for example, you definitely won't be able to buy anything like this for the price they ask. The paintings are authentic, turn around is big, so if you go there at different times, different paintings will be displayed, definitely not a mass production. The quality is great and the service is very welcoming, not pushy at all and is 5*. We bought a beautiful painting that was packed well. Will definitely be back for more when we manage to get to Bali again!

I wasn't prepared for the beautiful selection of work that the gallery has. It is very diverse in still and type. I also wasn't prepared for the cost. They have a lot of pricey work, but the guide that you meet when you walk in can help you find like work that can fit your pocket. Also, don't forget to negotiate. They also have a crew that does an excellent job of wrapping the art. I was totally impressed. Oh and it is open 24hours a day.

Bargain bargain bargain!!
You need not buy what they offer, you must bargain alot in Bali always!
Few artists are good and other paintings are okay, not that great. If you look into detail then you will understand the talent if the artist.
Enjoy watching paintings and the place.

There are some interesting pieces, but a lot of tripe, too. The "demonstration" of traditional Balinese painting consisted of only 2 artists. The pieces are all extremely large, and will not fit in suitcases.

I really liked some of the pieces , but I simply did not have the room to bring it home, it was too late in our visit. If you are American and have $, dont pay the marked price! Let them know you have cash and get it down. As for the home itself, it is the REAL jewel of the shop. its Stunning !!!
