The story of good and evil and the fight between them. The Barong is a mythical creature (good) and it fights the Rangda a mythological creature. All done by dance and the dancers.

It is a great experience and they provide a sheet that will explain the story and makes it easier to follow. It is colourful and the dancers are great. You have to watch their fingers, arms, and eyes as they provide so much more.

Absolutely appalled that we had to pay for an average performance that ends in killing a live baby chicken on the front of the stage. This is meant to be a theatrical play, not real but they feel they have to sacrifice a tiny baby chicken every performance and expect the audience to watch it wriggle after getting it's head cut off til it's death. Then discard the body on top of the rubbish on stage. I felt physically sick. If we had of known they do this we would not have seen the show. Very upsetting. Do not waste your money, to watch killing live animals.

Where to start.. a stoney amphitheater which is so outdated and rough looking. I don’t mean to harsh the buzz of Balinese culture or tradition, but that ‘show’ was beyond appalling.. some poor guys making racket in the corner for about 10 mins before anything happened, then some poor looking swamp monster in filthy costume came on stage and stood stonily still for around 5 mins.. at this point we sat looking at each other wondering what on earth we’d paid for.. when more of the ‘dancers’ graced the stage it got almost mortifyingly terrible. Seems like a tourist cull to get as much money for doing as little as they can.

100,000idk per ticket.. which is just over £5. There were around 80 guests and not even full, so the place must be absolutely raking it in! Mind you wouldn’t think so for the state of the toilet area... vile doesn’t cut it, I think I’d rather have soiled myself and walked around all day than use their unsanitary dungeons.

Wouldn’t waste your time/effort/money on going. It’s now second to ‘not getting methanol poisoned’ on my list of things never to do in Bali. Peace.

I really dislike leaving poor reviews because there are people's jobs at stake, but have to do so in this case. When we were driven into the parking lot, I was feeling like we were being sent into a tourist trap due to all the guided buses. Should have known better.

At a cost 200k Rhupess for two people, the show itself isn't good. Some men dressed in costumes grunting at the crowd (couldn't understand them except for "good morning, thanks for coming") gets old after a few minutes. The costumes are nice but that's about it.

No one in the crowd looked any happier than we did. We left 30 minutes early as we couldn't take it anymore.

The dancing was pretty poor also. And be prepared to sit on hard concrete steps for an hour.

Do yourself a favour and skip this place as there are so many cool things to see and do in Bali.

While in bali for 8 days we thought we needed to see something ethnic.
So we opted to go see the Barong dance. We sat through the entire time waiting for it to end. We didn't want to be rude and leave during the performance though we saw people getting up and leaving in the midst.
so honestly don't waste your time unless you want to be charitable.

Barong & Kris Dance is a story telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. A Barong (a mythological animal) represent good spirit and Rangda (a mythological monster) represent evil one. Balinese people also believe that the Barong is symbol of protector.

Many kinds of face are created for Barong: cat, Macan (tiger face) celeng (pig face). Somebody can die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance. The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items, and before they are brought out, a priest must be present to offer blessings.

Barong and Keris Dance is performed in many parts of Bali. Batubulan Village: everyday, 9:30 AM ; Puri Saren, Ubud: every Friday, 6:30 PM ; Catur Eka Budi, Kesiman: everyday, 9:30 AM.
The price is very high : about US$ 10 PP. You don't understand their language; so it is only the visuals you can enjoy.

Friendly Tip: Don't waste your money and time specially for these dances. You can see this for free as many hotels offer these dances with Dinner.

This dance show was well worth going to, so full of energy and a credit to all the characters. We loved the monkey!! whoever played that part, really has monkey antics down perfectly. Musicians were also good. Would recommend this show to everyone

Don't bother to go there. Paid 100.000 Rp. per person for a terrible performance. What a waste of time and money.

We have visited this on our guided tour of the area.

The dance is fairly long and if you are not into local culture you may get bored of it a little. We have stayed the entire show and have enjoyed taking some colourful photographs, they have posed with the production and the main mask at the end which was greatly appreciated by people wanting to capture the beauty of it while its still.

Is it worth a visit - yes, would you regret not visiting it -no.
