Totally in love with this place. So happy we got to see the horses. Guide Roberto was excellent. Great knowledge. Love how they care about the environment and work to protect nature and the wild horses. Would go back next time I visit Sardinia. Beautiful wild place.

The signs to find this place were not the best so stay alert while driving! There was a camper at the end of the gravel road with a gravel parking lot. Various types of bicycles were available to use for a donation. Our bikes worked surprisingly well. The first small herd of horses that we came upon had ropes around their necks. They also were very comfortable around us. I'm not saying that they were tame or trained but I question just how wild they really were. We biked to the pond and found several horses wading out there with some cows. We then biked a little further before turning around. It was a peaceful ride, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.

We spent 3 hours walking within Giara du Gesturi: very pleasant place, very relaxing; large paths across oak trees and these cute local horses. It’s a special place worth going, if you feel like relaxing in a sereine atmosphere...

Fabulous experience for our children and ourselves. It was amazing to see these horses in their natural habitat. The perfect way to discover Sardinia. We'll be back!

Amazing place only an hour away from Cagliari.. For modern tourists it will feel like a time-travel, and if you’re afraid of mosquitoes or don’t like to sweat, stay away in the summer. For those who like nature and authentic people, a must-do.
The road from Gesturi is easy and there’s a big parking place. Get to know Antonio who repairs the bicycles and you’re good to go.. you can stay on the trails but if you don’t, the map is not very detailed.. you’ll have to watch out.. we didn’t follow the trails and got lost only a little :) but found the right track back very quickly..

The park can be achieved from multiple directions. It seems less know from Gesturi: there is only a tourist information point (entrance is free but map is 2 euros..
So entrance is 2 euros in fact :)) and Antonio shop where you can rent bikes: system is interesting... you choose your bike (check speeds, tires! - old bikes!), do your tour and pay whathever you want (between 5 to 15 euros seems normal). Park is great with lots of horses! You can see them easily (even by foot) but come early because the sun can be hard and there are not a lot of shades.

Giara di Gesturi is a high plaeteau. From the small city you drive up a small road to the top, where the parking place is. There are different ways which you can walk, also as a circle. You ll see a lot of cork trees and the wild horses. They are around in families of 4-7 horses. Sometimes you can spot them behind the trees, the other time they are walking near the road. At some places they drink and eat. Depending on the family you can get about 5 - 15 meters near them. Not many people around and everything is quite. The small round course takes you around 2 hours with 7 - 8 km. Its worth seeing it!

Our trip to the Giara di Gesturi was an absolute highlight!

The whole plateau is divided into multiple parts - Gesturi is only one of the access points and communal owners of the land. We started out there and were glad we did due to the good pathways, maps and bikes (see below).

The whole Giara di Gesturi is home to wild horses, goats and cows, all of which we met on our 2-3 hr trip. Of course this is nature so no guarantee, but there were plenty of occasions.

The whole Gesturi area has good pathways and several signs - it wouldn't be easy to get lost here...We went to the Tuili area from there and pathways become more rough - possible for two untrainied office workers in their thirties, but I can imagine others may have trouble. But then again the area gets a little wilder as well (btw. if you hear a LOT of bells - don't run away scared - thats likely just a herd of goats)...

In that area you can get go to the botanic garden (door, but always open - due to wildlife) or head to one of the lakes.

The lakes may or may not be dried out end of summer/autumn, but in almost every of them theres a couple horses.

At the parking lot, coming from Gesturi there is a small hut with a ranger - he can give you a map in several languages for a couple of EUR.

The best thing though is the bike rental at the same parking lot - just ask the guy in the hut:
- You can take any bike (don't expect brand new ones, but the will work well. Make sure it is safe!)
- If theres something to be done - he'll fix it
- have fun
- return bike and make a donation (we gave ~5 bucks per hour, but thats up to everyone)

Again: totally worth the 3 hr ride (and 3hr back...)!!

We arrived at the entrance of the Giara near Gesturi and had to pay two euro's for entrance and a map - really cheap.

Since it was september and we started walking at noon, we had to bring some water and food to cope with the heat, but the cold winds and plenty of shades from the trees made it bearable.

We did the 5km walk and all the lakes (Pauli Oromea, Perdosu, Camisa) were dried up. But still, the nature is good with the cork trees, the dried lakes, lots of lizards and trying to spot the horses. Which we eventually did at the Serra a Argiolas.

You can also leave a donation and drive around on some mountain bikes.

I love the tranquility of this place. While we were walking we only spotted two other tourists on bike and a group of four walking.
