One of the most beautiful and worth visiting towns in this part of the Pyrenees. You must visit. By chance, I came across a male choir in the church. cool!

Another Historical Sight Not To Me Missed.....
Jun 2019 • Couples
My wife and I drove from Andorra to Perpignan, France and when we arrived at our hotel in Perpignan the first place we headed to was the historic district by the Castellet.. The tourism office was open and the lady who was helping us recommended the Village Medieval de Castelnou as being one of her favorite places for artisan type souvenirs to bring home....And she was right !

The Village is located in a historic fortress situated on a hillside about a half an hour from Perpignan. It was well worth the drive. The fortress itself is so photogenic with its cobblestone alleys, stone walls, flowers, and just what you would have hoped for...So have your digital camera or cell phone ready to take lots of photos.

There were so many shops located inside the fortress walls....Pottery, art galleries, cafes, pastry shops, fresh produce vendors, great fresh baked bread, and lots of local beer and wine choices....The Village Medieval de Castelnou was a great find indeed.

Hidden source of great talent

Something I could not find on line was information about an paper artist I met in a small workshop along the cobbled lanes in Castelnou. A talented and modest man who makes artefacts from junk mail, recycling the colours and textures from waste products. He doesn’t operate on line and sells his objects d’art from his workshop. I wasn’t there on a market day but maybe there also. His earrings were truly beautiful, light in weight and modestly priced €10. Pics are of two pairs I purchased. Little niche unexposed in today’s on line world.

Listed in the top 100 Beau Villages of France and I can understand why. It is picturesque and charming. It is situated on a hill, hence a lot of walking up and down cobbled streets but worth it.

Castle is permanently closed. Tuesday traditional market.

Lots of people suggest parking for free at the spot shown in Pic 1. I wouldn't like that climb down or up! €3 for parking was fine with me but the spot is well worth a stop for the view down to the castle and village.

We knew the castle was closed but went for the market and village and were not disappointed. Wonderful buildings, artisan shops and plenty of restaurants, though we bypassed the restaurants as prefer lunch with a more relaxed approach. Castelnou is well worth the trip if you know what you're going for.

We had lunch at a place just opposite the car park. Though simple it was fresh and very tasty. See pics for menu! Great system for ordering for people who don't speak French. The menu is reproduced on paper and you add the quantity of anything you want, add your first name and pass it back. Voilà. They also speak enough English to help you out :)

Couldn't find it in TripAdvisor to add the review there!

This charming medieval hilltop village has been my highlight of French villages! The cobbled streets, lack of tourists (midweek??) and the top floor apartments with the ‘bulge’ in the wall showing where the ovens were kept. Utterly unspoilt and quaint!

We went to visit this medieval village. As you approach it the views are amazing. You can park at the bottom and walk up the cobbled streets. There are a few small shops and restaurants. The views are stunning from here over the surrounding countryside.

Charming but careful if you have mobility issues!

A charming medieval village in an incredibly beautiful setting.
We always come to visit when we are in the area.
It can feel a little artificial, and there isn’t actually that much to see, but there’s enough to keep you entertained for an afternoon.
Be warned however, that the narrow streets are uneven and steep so if you have mobility issues like myself it can be a bit of a challenge to navigate around!

even if it is a business oriented museum, the place is worth a visit. Nicely rebuilt/maintained, the houses, lanes and stairs are amazing.

Beautiful from near and far

Get away from the beaches and step back in history with a visit up here. But plan carefully, as parking is a nightmare during special events, such as market days. Not a place for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
