The Australian Institute of Sport. The AIS. Australia's premier elite sports precinct. A place that cannot be found anywhere else in Australia. The AIS Campus in Canberra is an integrated and vibrant visitor, retail, sporting, business event and entertainment precinct. At this iconic sporting site, we welcome everyone to tour, shop, dine, be entertained, learn, train and experience the AIS, opening our doors to over 200,000 visitors annually from Australia and overseas. Only minutes from Canberra's CBD and set amongst 65 hectares of campus-like grounds with plenty of free parking, the AIS offers an insight into Australia's sporting past and a window into its' future. Tours operate daily (including weekends) at 10:00am, 11:30am, 1:00pm and 2:30pm.

Booked in for the 90min tour which was enjoyable only saw a fraction of the site as it is so large. Knowledgeable guide who is an up & coming athlete. Disappointing to see some sports like volleyball that don’t get virtually any Govt funding where as other sports such as basketball get a lot of money & athletes are fully subsidised. Worth the small fee.

Thanks Stephen P for your review and glad you enjoyed the tour and the discussion with our athlete. You are right, it is a large campus which includes hosting both the Basketball and Volleyball Centres of Excellence on site as well as the NBA Global Academy.

For anyone with an interest in sport it is well worth doing the tour. Hosted by AIS athletes, it provides a great insight into the training and facilities. As noted by some of the contributors the facilities are a little dated, but nothing too shabby. The commentary was definitely the best part - highlighting achievements, feats of human strength and endurance and inspiring pride in our Aussie athletes.

If you want a great gym in Canberra use this hidden gem, great Personal Trainers, not over crowded with gym junkies. I have been using for 5 years

We paid $16 for an adult and $9 for a child to go on this tour and were very disappointed.
The first part of the tour is a visit to Sportex (hands on sporting activities and Olympic memorabilia) which was mildly interesting where you are left to have a look for around 30 minutes.
The rest of the tour went for 1 hour where we saw a basketball stadium, pool, weights gym, volleyball training area and gymnastics training area. All were empty. The whole thing could have been covered in 20 minutes. Our tour guide was about as interested as my family were.
Don't waste your time or money. There are much better (and free) things to do and see in Canberra!

They make excellent coffee and not expensive then we did the tour and was worth it. The children enjoyed it also

Family of four did the tour. Cost $55 which I thought was a bit excessive considering it's me as a taxpayer who has funded this institute! Taken around by one of the gymnasts Luke who was very knowledgeable and a great guide. Spent first 30 minutes in the sportex area where you can try various sports on simulators. Our boys particularly liked the skeleton (like luge or bobsled). Don't know why they limit this area to tours and give you limited time only. Then tour of some of the training facilities. Impressive but you got the feeling it was an exclusive club that we weren't part of. Sething you should see if you are into sport.

How fantastic to see behind the scenes and be guided on the tour by someone actually training to be an elite athlete. Our guide was a long distance skier and lived full time at the centre. Fantastic that this support is offered and more appreciative of the effort that goes into training out elite representatives.

This was an opportunity to see where our future medal winners are training. It was an interesting and informative talk. There is an interactive room for kids and adults which is good fun. The five minute video is not needed, don't bother watching it. Stand outside and poke yourself in the eye instead.

We did a 90 minute tour of the complex which took us to an area where we went to an interactive room where we can shoot hoops, stand on the Sydney 2000 medals stand, and learn how to sprint, cycle, row and kick a footy. We then went and saw the gymnasium where we learnt about all the gymnastics equipment, we did a tour of the gym where there was a youth soccer team training on bikes, we saw the Volleyball, boxing and swimming training centres. The tour who is training with the AIS was very informative and was able to answer any question.

If you love any type of sport that is classified elite the AIS is the number one place to go. It is worth every cent the tour costs not only because you are getting to see the excellent facilities but your tour guide is a world class athlete. When I went there I was lucky enough to be given a tour guide by AIS scholarship holder for race walking Jared Tallent who went on to be a 3X olympic medalist. The best part of the tour at the time was in my opinion the interactive zone which is very well run, but upon a few years of getting older and looking back at the experience the highlight was being able to see where and how the athletes at the elite level train. Anyone who has even the slightest interest in sport should at least do a tour of the AIS to help support our Australian athletes, as well as to see them train and to see what the facilities that they train in are like.

Address is Leverrier St Bruce next to the Visitor centre.
Now for accomodation close by that's not an easy question. There are no motels in the complex and the closest place might be at Dickson, with the Dickson Tradies having the Quality Inn next door. It's a 10 minute drive to the pool.
There is also "the old Canberra" in at Lynham which is closer however away from shops. It would take 5 mins plus to drive to the pool.

I want to know how you book tour to AIS? Their website seems to be for groups (is schools).
Also if you do the tour do you have to pay extra to swim in the pool?

Hi Erin, you can call the team 02-6214 1010 to book an AIS Tour - they'd love to hear from you. There is a separate swim entry fee to the AIS Aquatic & Fitness Centre of $A6.20 adults & A$4.70 child/concession - paid on entry. Visit the website (ausport.gov.au/visit/swimfit/timetables)
to check pool and lane availability - it is updated weekly for the information of our regular and casual swimmers. Hope to see you at the AIS Campus.
