Pub food and drinks
Jul 2017 • Friends
Cycled from Tunbridge Wells to Matfield to meet a friend at 3.0pm for a pint and a sandwich. unfortunately there was no food on at that time of day. Got charged 50p for the privilege of using a debit card as the bill was less than £10.

Trying too hard.

This is a lovely country pub, who we think are aiming for fine dining but never quite get it right. The menu is inventive and inviting but we're often disappointed. My lobster bisque recently looked so pretty and was I felt expensive. It's was thick and split, because the amount of cream in it had been allowed to boil. On top was a huge dollop of cold cream decorated with crayfish. The result of this made the soup under it cold as well. I wanted to tell the chef what he had done wrong, but you don't do you. The following week we had the same soup in T Wells in the fish market it was superb. Thin, full of depth of flavour, made the right way utterly delicious.
The staff are always reasonably welcoming, well the landlady is and it's popular as well being in a lovely setting by the village green. If it's just a drink then the ambience is nice, rustic, log fires hops etc. If you want reasonably priced pub food then it's not here.

too expensive
went here last weekend, we had two large white wines £17.90!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we don't mind paying for good wines but these were average and overpriced.
when you consider just down the road in the star public house the same drinks are £9.00 for two glasses of similar quality.

Dear Steve, We are sorry your visit on the weekend left you feeling dissatisfied, we are always receptive to any feedback. It is regrettable you did not discuss this with us at the time rather than resorting to Tripadvisor. We offer several wines by the glass with something to hopefully suit all tastes and budgets. Our prices are clearly displayed on the chalkboard above the bar with our house wine at £5.90 for a large glass. We are sorry to read you found it to be just "average" but our Sauvignon Blanc (Kim Krawford, Marlborough, NZ) has won several international awards and is consequently priced accordingly. Despite it being our most expensive wine by the glass, it remains our best selling white wine. Suffice to say it is just not economically possible to sell a comparable wine at £4.50 per glass. Please contact us if you wish to discuss further. Gemma.

Nice pint!!
Sep 2016 • Couples
Just driving back to London on a sunny Sunday afternoon, spotted The Wheelwrights Arms, nice looking country pub, with a good selection of ales. I had a great pint of Boondoggle Blonde Ale, wish I'd not been driving as I'd probably have had a few more than one! The cabsav was pretty good too, all in all it was a very nice pub friendly staff and a nice location.

Matfield Village Fete - Beer Tent
Very disappointed with the Wheelrights and the "beer tent" at this afternoons Matfield village fete. Three cask ales were available which is fantastic, vbut disappointingly, no effort had been made to keep the casks even remotely cool on what was arguably one of the warmest days of the summer. My biggest gripe however was the price paid for a a very diluted Pimms! An astonishing £4.50 for what was a pint of lemonade with some chopped fruit and one measured dash of PImms. No sign of mint nor cucumber, two essential ingredients for a quality Pimms. Great it is available of course, but please do it right and do not charge £4.50. This was a complete rip off and pure greed on the part of the landlord - very disappointing!

Good beer , food not good value.

Good selection of beers, good service, pleasant staff. Food is expensive and not good value for money. We need to return to the days when all 3 Matfield pubs supplied good quality food at reasonable prices. Other pubs in the surrounding area can offer a better deal.

Fantastic village pub
Great news that this pub is now a free house as the beer selection instantly improved. Lovely building and garden. Cosy real fire. Landlord and lady are very friendly and sociable with customers. Atmosphere of a proper village pub. Have not tried food recently so cannot comment but restaurant is always busy which is a good sign.
