We spent the Easter long weekend at Blue Shed Retreat @ Karrabool Olives, where David and Judy are welcoming hosts, and passionate about their olive grove. The accommodation is spacious and very comfortable - the bed in particular was excellent! Ample and delicious breakfast essentials were provided, including numerous different teas and a great little coffee machine. We joined the Farm Walk Tour on Sunday morning, to hear David's talk on the olives, and Judy made us a great tasting plate of various olives and the Karabool oils. The property is wonderfully peaceful, but within cycling distance of the many lovely wineries and restaurants, and a quick drive back to town if needed. We did a bush walk into Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve, which has strunning views, and were delighted to find that on out third visit to the Mudgee region, there is still so much more to discover. Luckily the evenings were clear, so a relaxing spa bath under a huge moon was an added bonus.

The owners are lovely and friendly. I really enjoyed the tasting and got to be the first taster of this season's olive oil! I bought a bottle of last year's oil and can't wait to use it in cooking and on salads. If you're visiting after June 2018 definitely have a taste of this year's batch!

Thanks Stephanie, we have just completed our 2018 harvest and while the crop was down the oil is fantastic. We had ideal conditions leading up to the harvest which has resulted in an oil which is rich and buttery with some bitterness and peppery aftertaste. We are really excited about it.

This is a really great attraction in the Mudgee District. It is really worth the drive out on the Ulan Road north of Mudgee, to find this award winning, Olive Oil Producer. I drove slowly, so as not to miss anything and easily found the well signposted turn offs. It took me only 20 minutes to arrive at the door. I arrived 30 minutes early and parked in the car-parking spaces provided. The proprietor, Judy, found me in my car and invited me inside, to wait for the shop opening and provided me with a bottle of cold water, a glass and a newspaper to read, while I waited. That is true country hospitality. Others arrived early and they were treated in the same way. The shop is filled with olive products and other local products from nearby businesses. I can see that the area's producers work cooperatively, selling each others produce, which is the latest retail trend, especially competing with big companies. On opening, Judy provided a talk about olive oil production on the property, explaining about the different processes and types of machinery used. There is a TV screen in the shop showing a well prepared, visual presentation highlighting farming machinery in action, as well as an aerial view of the property and the olive trees. When you arrive, ask to try the complimentary tasting plate which includes some slices of white bread, some light and dark coloured olives, Karrabool olive oil, hazelnut dukkah and olive pesto. A very nice start to your visit and you can find those items for sale in the shop. As I had not eaten breakfast and it was nearing lunch time, I chose to eat a Deli Platter ($15.00) consisting of Karrabool Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Olives, local Ham, High Valley Cheese, a large knob of fresh butter, very fresh Australian Gourmet Hazelnuts, Kiwi Fruit, Gourmet crackers and two slices of grain Bread. Addition condiments were provided, including additional olive oil and the really delicious John's Tomato Relish, that is irresistible. John is a neighbour who makes the relish as a hobby, has been encouraged to bottle some, for sale in this shop. Judy's husband, David, who also manages the property with Judy, is also a Barista and makes great coffee using a restaurant size coffee machine. It is like a coffee oasis, in the country and many of the locals head there for their morning coffee hit. I had a cappuccino and a latte over the course of my visit, delicious and impressive. Additionally, cakes and scones are baked daily for sale in the shop and are out on show to tempt you. After a recent visit to Olive Oil producers in Croatia, I have developed some interest in Olive Oil tasting, and using recently acquired skill, I found that the Australian certified, Karrabool Extra Virgin Olive Oil has the appropriate amount of bitterness that highlights a top quality oil. It also displays a fragrance of fruit during initial tasting which also shows the high quality of the oil. The oil is offered for sale in dark bottles which preserves the taste for longer. All important dates on the bottle show Pressing, the Batch and Best before. The oil won bronze medals at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show 2016 and also at the Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition in 2016. All of these observations attribute to a wonderful tasting olive oil and very worthy of a trip to Mudgee to meet Judy and David and to try some great tasting produce. A visit is highly recommended.
