About
The Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca exhibits a permanent collection of 129 paintings and sculptures by Spanish artists of the Abstract Generation of the 1950s and 60s (Millares, Tàpies, Sempere, Torner, Rueda, Zóbel, Saura, among some thirty other artists), as well as other artists from the 1980s and 90s.In 1980, the founder of the Museum, Fernando Zóbel, donated its collection to the Fundación Juan March, which then incorporated it into its own collection. Situated in the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses) of the city of Cuenca, in a late-fifteenth-century medieval building, property of the city, the Museum has undergone various renovations and, in 1994, inaugurated its galleries for temporary exhibitions.

This is one of the best modern art galleries we have visited. The collection is not large but each piece shouts quality. It is very well laid out with plenty of space for each exhibit, and many very interesting pieces. The collection is housed in one of the hanging houses in the old town of Cuenca, which adds to its interest. There was no entry charge, but we would willingly have paid. It was such a treat.

Our admission was included with a tour, not something we would have done on our own. If you like abstract art, be sure to go. The most interesting part for us was the building itself. The museum is built in two of the last three houses that hang from the cliffs. Rooms in the museum on the cliff side have spectacular views of the bridge and gorge below.

Absolutely entranced by the exhibits in this wonderful gallery. Situated in the hanging houses which have been converted to exhibit a truly stunning collection of abstract art. Interior walls all painted white to enhance the display, even some of the windows, repositioned when the building was restored have been aligned to create a piece of art.
I am not usually a fan of abstract art and in fact some works on display here were not my cup of tea, but overall I very much enjoyed my visit. The building itself is interesting with wonderful views and the collection is well laid out in an easy to follow route. Entry is free.
Worth a stop in Cuenca just for this gallery and the Cathedral.

The museum has on display many items from contemporary abstract Spanish artists. A splendid collection if you like that type of art, which I do. It had all the names I recognised and liked from big booming museums around the world. These are reason to not miss on their own.

The museum is a display itself and is a fabulous bonus. It is one of the casa colgadas of Cuenca, meaning it has been stuck on the top of a cliff and it overhangs that cliff. An impressive site from the outside and the reason we visited Cuenca.
The house is late 15th century.
The house has been modernised to house it’s collection. It retains a confusing set of rooms and you walk a route up and down stairs and through disorientating room after room. An adventure by itself to view the collection.
Each room, well maybe half of the rooms, have ancient wooden windows that provide first class views over the Cuenca countryside.
The top floor has the ancient exposed supporting beams.
The crescendo is the top floor where there are three large adjacent windows. These create a triptych of views that are as much a work of art as the works of art.
A double bonus from visiting.

And here come the steak knives. It’s free. You would be a fool to miss it.

An easy day trip from Madrid leaving on the AVE at 8:40 am and returning on the AVE at 16:10. Enough time to see the museum before it takes its elongated lunch break and then go and see the rest of Cuenca. I cannot recommend more highly.

I really liked thus gallery even though I was not that impressed with the modern art. The art work is really well displayed in the casa congales. Walking around the house itself is a real pleasure and it makes one aware of the intricacies of the building with its twists and turns. There are parts where some of the original stonework has been retained. There views from the windows are also spectacular. We had expected to spend about 30mibs here but were there for an hour and a half. Entrance is free - an added bonus.

Be warned that the museum closes for a couple of hours for lunch. Really well organised gallery, completely painted white so not to distract from the artwork and has some stunning views when you look out of the window. Well worth a visit.

We loved the art and the architecture of the museum, located in one of the “casas colgadas”, a must see! The entrance was free.

This is a beautiful, small museum, inside an historic hanging house. The space is well-appointed and a good mixture of created visual art with preserved historic architecture.

This museum has a free entrance. The best part is that you are really inside the "Casas colgantes" from where yo have a spectacular view.
