The Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca exhibits a permanent collection of 129 paintings and sculptures by Spanish artists of the Abstract Generation of the 1950s and 60s (Millares, Tàpies, Sempere, Torner, Rueda, Zóbel, Saura, among some thirty other artists), as well as other artists from the 1980s and 90s.In 1980, the founder of the Museum, Fernando Zóbel, donated its collection to the Fundación Juan March, which then incorporated it into its own collection. Situated in the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses) of the city of Cuenca, in a late-fifteenth-century medieval building, property of the city, the Museum has undergone various renovations and, in 1994, inaugurated its galleries for temporary exhibitions.

This is a free museum and houses a permanent collection as well as changing exhibits. It is fascinating to scramble up and down the stairs in the super modern interior and then look out from the ancient house it occupies. Highly recommended even if you...More

This beautiful museum of Spanish Abstract Art was founded by the Filipino-Spanish artist Fernando Zobel and is established in a "hanging" house in the charming historic town of Cuenca. The exterior blends in with the "old town" feel of Cuenca but the interior is contemporary...More

Driving from Valencia to Madrid, you have no idea of what you will soon experience in Cuenca. The Museo is literally "perched" on a cliff known as the "hanging houses." It is the former home of mid-15th century, canon Gonzalo Gonzalez de Canamares and is...More

The sleepy town of Cuenca reinvented itself as a destination of art. Numerous art museums and galleries are located in such a small and remote town. This cantilevered house, which is the symbol and image of Cuenca, is where the movement towards art started here....More

Towards the end of the route there is a timeline (in Spanish and English) describing the development of the art museum in the Hanging Houses, which was very helpful. The art was very interesting, but for me the buildings were the real stars!

Casas colgadas, or Hanging houses, built throughout 14th and 15th centuries are the emblematic buildings and symbols of Cuenca. In the middle ages and early modern era, almost all of the tall civil buildings (first European scyscrappers) were some sort of hanging houses, with wooden,...More
