The San Pablo Bridge saves a lot of time for those who decide to cross the Huecar River gorge in the direction of the former monastery of San Pablo. By itself, it does not represent a special architectural value, since it was built a little more than a century ago in 1902 according to the project of José Maria Fuster at Tomas on the site of the collapsed old bridge. However, the old bridge stood for three centuries, and a new 100-meter bridge was built on old supports, putting one 60-meter iron support in the middle. For reliability. The bridge offers excellent views of the Cuenca hanging houses, and this is perhaps the main motive to be on the bridge...

As we were staying in the “Parador de Cuenca”, we had a beautiful view over the bridge, and we needed to pass this bridge every time we went to visit the old town. The current bridge was preceded by another of the same name, built between the years 1533 and 1589 on the initiative of Canon Juan del Pozo, originally in stone, to cross the gorge of Huécar, connecting the convent of San Pablo and the city. This bridge has collapsed.
In the year 1902 the current iron and wood bridge was built. The project was carried out by the Valencian civil engineer José María Fuster y Tomás, and erected by George H. Bartle, whose foundry, also from Valencia, had great notoriety at the time, being inaugurated on April 19, from the year 1903. It is a straight bridge, 100 meters in length with two spans and a maximum height of 60 meters, supported by the masonry pillars starting from the previous bridge and, in the center, by an iron plumb. And so it is making Part of the city's heritage

Standing at the centre gives two fabulous vistas. One back towards the Hanging Houses and forward to the former Convent and Church of San Pablo.

Unveiled in 1903 it’s a replacement for a centuries earlier crossing that fell down.

A Parador Hotel now occupies the old Convent and its Church has been repurposed as an exhibition centre for works by the renowned artist Gustavo Torner.

Looking towards the Hanging Houses, in the early morning light the rock formations have an almost lifelike quality to them.

It is one of the essential places when visiting Cuenca. I recommend visiting it twice, during the day and at night. During the day it offers spectacular views of the hanging houses from the side of the parador. There is also a sign for the city: "Cuenca", an almost obligatory photo. At night the lighting on the bridge makes it magical. The bridge doesn't move at all. At least when I was there there was no wind.

Stunning views across the bridge to the hanging houses. Definitely dont try it if you have vertigo like myself or book in the parador! A few metres was enough as the the railings are surprisingly very low and it vibrates when someone walks past you. Take the car or walk around to the parador side so not to miss the amazing views.

Cuenca is one of those towns you must visit. Beautiful during the day, and better at night. Stayed in the monastery where parking the car was deep into the caves under the monastery, just the start of real feel living.
The old town built on a ravine with houses hanging over edges and living styles nearly unimaginable, and great... Just slightly touristy but not real bad.

As I said, gorgeous at night....

I am afraid of heights and worried a lot about crossing this bridge to the other side which my wife wanted to do. It was a heart pounding experience and not for the faint heart. The view on the other side of the hanging houses is great. That is me by the Cuenca sign to prove to others that I made it!

...for this pretty bridge to reopen soon. It gives easy access to the old town from the parador, quite apart from views far below of the Huecar River gorge. When built in the 16th century, it connected the old town to St Paul Convent [the present parador]. The original bridge collapsed, the present one dating from 1902. Locals thought it should reopen in late 2021.

Long uphill walk to get there but, good views once you get there. However, we think you get better views from underneath looking up rather than down. Not worth more than 15 minutes of your time but you can get some good photos .( Better from underneath )

Cuenca was a very pleasant surprise for us. We were travelling from Valencia to Madrid by car and decided to spend some time on the way. We selected Cuenca and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to Spain. The whole old town/historic area is fascinating and the walk over the bridge was superb with the views of the hanging houses and the prador on the orher side. Don't miss Cuenca if you are in this part of Spain.
