The stairs to go on top of the Ruinas have been closed as they need to be repaired, but you can just go down from the ruins to a trail that follows a canyon for kilometres, which offers amazing views...

The remains of the castle do include the tower and arch over the main street, and are accessible to the public for free, with views across the town and the gorge.

On my first visit to Cuenca they did not catch my attention but on a later one I visited them at the insistence of my friends. Frankly I didn't think it was a big deal, not that they had any interest.

On the grand C. del Trabuco it was great to see the substantial remnants of the bastion.

In addition to its fortification purposes it was also a King's Palace. King Alfonso VIII lived here for ten years of his reign.

At the highest point of the city it’s a solid edifice with fine stone and stone craft.

Cuenca was an Arab fortress-town for more than four centuries and from those early days most important fortification in the city was one today known as Castillo ruins or Arco de Bezudo. Only northern section of the wall and the entrance arch which allows to enter/leave the old town have been left today. The arch is named after Gutierre Rodriguez Bezudo from Segovia, who fought the Arabs with King Alfonso VIII to conquer Cuenca in 1177. Area between Arco de Bezudo and Plaza mayor was meant for city nobles and clergy. Interesting story is behind nobles and how they attained their social status. Reconquista did not brought instant peace and security, just the contrary, it was deemed dangerous to work in agriculture so Catholic settlers preferred to dedicate themselves to livestock, much more easily defended in case of attack. All those in possession of war horses, named People’s Cavalry, charged with the ongoing defense of local land and of communal livestock. Little by little, the People’s Cavalry of Cuenca would see its privileges grow and would end up as the most powerful group in the city, with their dwellings occupying the best positions.

Old fortress ruins is a must see because it can give observer sense of how was to be medieval city guard, scaning the landscape in 360 degrees and to watch people aproaching the city gate. It is free of charge and takes 5-10 minutes. Also, just across Arco de Bezudo in Barrio del Castillo there are couple of coffe bars with great views on southern, sun oriented slopes which I recommend in winter time when visiting Cuenca.
