A pleasant surprise

Saw the museum while passing by and called for a visit. We arranged a visit for the next morning. An amazing collection of various artifacts covering all the history of the island. Also, there was a nautical collection and a collection of musical instruments on display. I didn't expect for such a museum to be found in Ayia Napa. It might not be widely knownin the area but it is definitely worth a visit.

A little culture in Ayia Napa

This museum is just 2 minutes walk from the end of "Bar Street" at No. 11 Gianni Ritsou. Walk pass Millie's apartments and it is on the left. We found it by accident one evening and found it very interesting. Mr. Sergios the owner, bought a closed down Super Market just over a year ago and has converted it into a lovely museum. His passion for collecting started 30 years ago when he was serving in the Merchant Navy. He retired as a Captain and has thrown himself into this really worthwhile task. He describes it "As a sign of respect and honour to previous generations who fought for the freedom of the Nation and to solicit the voluntary participation of Cyprus in all liberation struggles and wars". He showed us around the museum where he has pots from several thousand years ago, through more recent times-1800s, 1950's up to the present day.It reminded us that there were more than 30 thousand Cypriots who participated in WW11 in the British Army, fighting for freedom and justice in the world. There are weapons, costumes and vehicles.( He has 14 Land Rovers yet to be displayed!) Also there are musical instruments and even an American Juke Box from the 1950's. We had not seen enough on our first visit so went back the next day to enjoy some more. We will visit again on our next trip to Ayia Napa to see how the extension is progressing and see if the Land Rovers are on display.
