About
A visit to Tenuta Castelbuono is a journey into the world of art and wine. The Carapace, the winery designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro, is the first sculpture in the world in which one lives and works simultaneously. This unique work of art is a shrine to hold the precious great wines of Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco, the true souls of Umbria.

We had reviewed this place on the internet prior to visiting and were very impressed with our wine tasting appointment. Our guide, Aurora, was well informed and did a good job of providing the background on the architectural significance and construction of this facility. The "Dart and Arrows" can only be fully understood when they are pointed out and defined in a live visit to the copper-domed building. And the above-ground structure is only half the story since the wine processing facilities and operations are all under ground. While most of the aging of the organic wines is currently carried out in stainless steel tanks and wooden casts, they are experimenting with aging in terra cotta containers to help reduce the acidity from the grape tannins.

The views of the surrounding countryside are beautiful as the facility sits on top of a hill. We sampled two wines; the Montefalco Rosso and the Montefalco Sagrantino. Both have a 15% alcohol content and the former is a blend of wines from four grapes and the latter is from 100% Sagrantino grapes. Sparkling water and lite nibbles were provided to help ensure the appropriate depth of the wines was realized.

We were well pleased with the visit and the tasting.

This winery, the Carapace, was designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro, and is a unique work of modern art. The building alone is worth the visit. But it would be a shame not to stay and taste the great wines of Sagrantino and Rosso de Montefalco, and guided tours take place in a variety of languages.

The owners of this vineyard had the fortune of having their facility designed by a master. The location splendid, as are many of the vineyards in the region. With no expectations for the visit, we were completely disappointed in the way in which we were greeted by the hostess. The hostess seemed not to be interested in us, more interested in the group that was to arrive shortly after we did. We found the shepherd meters from the vineyard entrance, herding his sheep to be more hospitable than the hostess.

As this winery can only be visited upon reservation (as their website clearly indicates) I made arrangements for a winetour including winetasting in English language some months before our visit in August. Aurora handled my request efficiently. When arriving we were welcomed warmly by Annalisa. The building is astonishing, as are the views. It is located on top of a hill and provides typical Umbrian views all around. Giorgia was our kind host. As it had rained the day before we did not go into the vineyard itself (which normally is included in the winetour). She explained us the filosophy of the architect Arnaldo Pomodori when designing the building which looks like a turtle. The shell is made of mainly bronze (and mixed with fibres) and changes colours with nature. It nicely blends in. The inside construction of the building is made of laminated wood. Also inside the colours used are special. The views are amazing as well (I already mentioned it but it is so special). Next to an explanation of the architecture, you will visit the cellar and the production floor. Giorgia explained everything quite well and we asked numerous questions. The wine tour ended with the wine tasting. There are 2 options to choose from when making your reservation. If you opt for tasting 2 wines, the price is 12 euro. If you would like to taste 4 wines, you pay 20 euro. During the tasting cheese, bread, olive oil and mineral water are offered as well. We had a very pleasant tour and left with some bottles, including Ferrari bubbles. Highly recommended.

A casual drive down a country road near our B&B in Bevagna brought a unique red "obelisk" on a hill into view, puzzling us. Further investigation brought us to the ultra modern dome the "Carapace" which contains the winery with a tasting room and the storage and aging cellar beneath. This was opened in 2012, is ultramodern, and a highly recommended destination. The wines are good examples of the local Sagratino grape, and other wines are available from other vineyards. The tasting room is large, casual and truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

This is a stunning piece of architecture on a hill outside Bevagna with glorious views of the surrounding area. The main building, designed by a sculptor and inspired by a turtle's shell is wonderful and houses the visitor area with the cellars and production areas below. The staff give tours in English and Italian and are friendly and knowledgeable. Needless to say the wine is also excellent and well worth buying.

We discovered this place through an exhibition of Steve McCurry, and we weren't disappointed. The "Carapace" is spectacular and so is the view. The kids enjoyed the space - and the grown-ups the wine tasting. Will definitively go back for more......

My friends and spend a wonderful afternoon at Castelbuono. We walked in without an appointment and they were very accommodating. We enjoyed seeing all of the amazing artwork as well as the inner workings of the winery. The tasting came with an excellent meat and cheese plate and a bottle of wine to take home. After the tasting we sat outside and took in the breathtaking views while enjoying a glass of their wine. Thank you for a great experience!
