Häme Castle is one of Finland's medieval royal castles. It is believed to have been built at the end of the 13th century, following the crusade by Swedish Earl Birger to Häme region. During the Middle Ages the original fortified camp was built into a residential castle for its commandant. In the 18th century a third storey was built and curtain wall buildings partly replaced the original outer walls. The castle and its surroundings were in prison use from 1837 to 1972. The main castle is now presented as a historical monument. The Häme Castle and its redbrick barracks are on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. The promontary has been a meeting place for centuries, and the walls almost echo the voices from the Middle Ages.

We really enjoyed our visit here, also a lot of good experiences for kids. Nice selection of plate armor, beautiful landscape around the castle, good toilet facilities (also for small kids) and good cafeteria. We really appreciated the room where kids(and adults) could try on plate armor :) We half expected our two year old son to be bored halfway... More

I visited on a day trip from a large scout camp at Evo. It was a novelty using flushing toilets and a decent hot meal with fresh salad so definitely recommend the restaurant. It was a slightly disappointing that the armoury collection wasn't Finnish but interesting none the less.

You can also walk around there and feel atmosphere with no cost. Also you can buy a ticket and go see it from inside. Anyway, its interesting old castle in really good shape.

This castle was mainly the reason for my whole visit to the city of Hämeenlinna, and it was definitely worth it. It's a bit of a walk from the railway station/city centre, but still very doable (about 25 minutes or so from the station). In the summer of 2016 they have an armour exhibition called Heavy Metal at the castle,... More

Went to the Castle as part of the sports challenge, and especially enjoyed the heavy metal exhibition, about the armour and other weaponry from several centuries which was on display there.

This castle has a really nice history but unfortunately the museum doesn't brings that up. All the rooms were empty filled with nothing. And if there was anything else than white walls the the information was mostly in Finnish.

Hämeenlinna castle is a great landmark, historical site and beautiful stone and brick building next to Vanajavesi lake. They have restaurant on site, museum shop, changing exhibitions, guide service available and at the moment very good Heavy Metal armours and weapons exhibition in the 2nd floor museum. A must visit in Hämeenlinna. Good for children as well. I strongly recommend... More

We visited Hame Castle yesterday. The ticket cost 9 €. The visit takes around 2 hours if you enter in the museum. It is a medieval Castle. If you like history you will enjoy it. The staff is very helpful and friendly. It is a place that you can visit with kids.

This is a very nice stop if you are around the area! This place is great for kids, they have some nice activities and games! The entrance fee for adults is 9EUR and it takes from 1.5 to 2hrs to visit. The view from the castle is beautiful and is very near the city centre.
