Every evening after sunset, fairy penguins come ashore at the Twelve Apostles beach. You can't get down to beach level but you can watch from the lookouts.

We asked about this at the tourist info place at Port Campbell and they let us know about the equipment loan system, I think it runs for other tourist info sites along the G.O.R - you need to leave credit card details (the sheet is returned to you when you return what you borrow) and then you can borrow binoculars/GPS/digital camera/telescope...!

We borrowed binoculars to see the penguins and an anometer. What's an anometer? A handy gadget on a lanyard which measures wind speed, altitude, temperature etc and came with "windchaser" worksheets for the kids. We were bowled over at how good a service this was. The equipment looked brand new and the staff at the centre were absolutely lovely and helpful.

By the way, Port Campbell tourist info also has a display of items recovered from local shipwrecks that is well worth taking a look at.

The people here are truly passionate about their job and I would encourage people to drop by the place. I've read many positive reviews about the place and planned to drop by the place to borrow the Telescope and Binoculars. Nina was there to greet me and my small family, she took the time to patiently explain to us the attractions nearby Port Campbell area (Timboon, Petersborough) and even recommended places where we can have our lunch by the ocean. There is also a model of a Loch Ard ship which sank nearby the area and on of the ship's anchor is displayed near the entrance. If you have the time, you can stay and explore the PC area as the Visitor Info Center have lots of programs to cater for both the young and old. Oh by the way, the telescope is huge (we had to drop our luggage at the hotel first and came back to it can fit the car's bonnet. Also, both telescope and binoculars are free and you can borrow it for the night to explore the night sky!! (you have to give your credit card details as deposit). Very interesting Visitor Info Center indeed!!

During this road trip, this was my favourite Information Centre... because it's more than just pamphlet's and information... it's an immersive experience.

I have been to Flagstaff's light show in Warrnambool twice to watch the story about the Loch Ard and it's story. And ... little did I know exactly how far away from Warrnambool that actually occurred... the disaster occurred much closer to this little town. They have the anchor of the Loch Ard on display and other relics from the ship. It's a small, but inviting Centre. I bought another book here... the staff member was lovely and very helpful. She also had oodles of historical information to impart. I could have talked to her longer, but my Uncle was keen to keep moving.

If you are in town... I recommend a visit here not just to understand what's around to look at...but what else might be on offer that you would otherwise miss. The motor inn we were staying in had a faulty dryer so the lady who was working here on the day sent us to the Recreation Area to use their dryers. The Recreation Area offers an amazing area for campers.

Again... I can't force your hand, but if I was a traveller... this is where I would want to get information from. And ... a little bit of history to boot.

The Visitor Centre was a disaster, with the thousands of tourists daily they could have done a really good job for visitors and for themselves. We were hungry, but they had nothing worth buying but a couple of packs of biscuits and crisps plus a cup of tea for $38.

Has good information and helpful staff. If you have done your research you just need to check the information boards and maps. If you are just driving up, this place would be a must to get information, oriented and directions.

Thanks for the review and using our Information Centre Ned. Visitors can also jump onto our social accounts @visit12apostles pre-visit to get a sense of which places are best visited at what time of day and are welcome to borrow free binoculars (and even a telescope if staying overnight) to make the most of their visit :)

We stopped to get all the local info and Nina was very helpful. We were privileged to get some of her personal preferences, on some of the activities we wanted to do.
