My wife and I visited The Visitor Centre where this place is located, during our recent holiday in Lorne for three nights. We stayed across the road at The Mantra Lorne and walked here.

To learn the history of The Great Ocean Road is worthwhile. The men who built this magnificent road presented Australia with an Internationally Acclaimed Tourist Destination that has stood the test of time.

The story indicated that it was hard work and living conditions in tents made it a tough time to get through.

My husband & I had recommended to us "The Great Ocean Road Story" Exhibition during a recent trip to Lorne. It is located at the Lorne Visitor Information Centre & entry is free.

Talk about Amazing! We are both Victorian "born & bred" so the Great Ocean Road has always formed a part of our upbringing in one form or another but we are not ashamed to admit that up until now we had only ever thought of the road as a 'beautiful scenic drive". How wrong we were!

[ An Incredible Time in Victoria's History ]:
We were fascinated to learn that first conceived in 1918 as a Memorial to Returned Soldiers & Sailors the Great Ocean Road Project ultimately provided employment for thousands of workers whilst also assisting them with their physical recovery from the many & varied ailments they had suffered during the war.

Stunning storyboards & incredible photographs told us how the Road became a reality as a result of the combined efforts of many people. " From community donations, to the sale of land. From the meticulous planning of engineers & surveyors, to the sale of merchandise & the then 'revolutionary' idea in 1920 to deliver newspapers to towns by car in time for breakfast" - these are just some small snippets of the jaw dropping story that the installation imparts.

[More than just the Road]:
In addition to discovering about 'the Road', we were enthralled by the telling of the impact & changes brought upon the many small towns and villages that up until that point had only been accessible by boat.

Not just minimal, these included great innovation & progress in the areas of access to medical treatment, schools & even food supplies.

** [Summary]**
This Exhibition was so wonderful that I must admit to having some difficulty in ending this review before I give too much away! Overall we found it thoroughly entertaining, educational & an absolute eye opener to a part of Victoria's colourful history that to us had previously remained untold.

We highly recommend that a trip to this facility be added to your "to do list" as a priority. My favourite part was learning about the "Toll Gates", I wonder what yours will be?

Thank you for reading this review, I hope that it has been helpful.

I mentioned the archway in a previous review. And this story exhibit will really bring to life the hard work that was done to build the road. And with free entry, you really shoudnt ignore this little gem.

Before coming here I always assumed the Great Ocean Road was just another highway constructed for easier access along the Australian coast. I was wrong! This museum details the rich story of the great ocean road - from how it got started, to the stories of the workers and engineers who contributed to the building of the road. As a history buff I thoroughly enjoyed this small exhibition. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area, it opened my eyes to a new side of history.

It's similar to the California coastline... BUT, this is AUSTRALIA, with its beautiful, pristinely preserved wild nature! Must go!

We had already traveled most of the Great Ocean Road (having come from Adelaide) before reading the history of the road --- it did however help us confirm that we had seen everything on our journey (thankfully we had done our research before we left for Australia)

Well worth the time to schedule this road trip into your holiday. Easy drive with lots of pullovers and view points. Best if you go the direction that puts you in the outside view lane.

Really well done museum and display. It's worth stopping here to get a real idea of the background story of how the road was planned and developed. So much effort and complexity involved to create such a beautiful and scenic byway. This place does a great job of telling that story.
