The view from here over Apollo Bay is great and well worth the 10 minute walk from the car park, although the path from the car park was steeper than I had expected As I completed the walk to the viewpoint I was surprised that a lot of people were standing around, seemingly detached from viewing the town and bay. It then became apparent why this was so as a hang glider took off! This was a most unexpected sight but it was fascinating to watch the pilot riding the thermals.

Steep, short track leads to a fenced and grassy viewing area.
Odd that local council hasn’t landscaped or built the area into a feature. Perhaps it’s due to the grumpy local property adjacent to car park warning off trespassers. Dare you to knock on his door asking for lookout directions ... & I’ll shout you a curried scallop pie ;)

Short steep trail to a great lookout (and some wildlife on the hillsides). Suitable to take a pram up, but it is a challenge. Would not take pram if they can't walk down on own because pushing pram down is more dangerous. We were able to push it up hill and have our son walk down while I pushed empty pram. Took only about 5-10 mins to walk each way. Overall short walk for very nice view, highly recommended and estimate spent about 10-15 mins on the top or a little more if you want to bring a picnic.

We ventured to this place early in the morning before we left town. Great spot for a view of the entire area. Good for a walk (albeit a bit steep). Would love to see a handrail or proper footing installed although our inactive group managed to make it to the stop. I'd also add a park bench or some signage / history about the area... but I guess it just adds to the charm.

This track and lookout are on private property, a farm. The track is fenced on both sides until you get close to the top. It then opens out to, I assume the lookout area. I say assume because we did not venture that far because there was a very large steer grazing on the path. The steer did not threaten us however we chose to not proceed, we did not assume/expect it to move out of our way.
Although we did not get to the top the view we did see was amazing and well worth the short walk.

the < 10 min walking path leading to mariner's lookout is on private land. there are also sheep grazing around the hills. parking lot at trailhead is small but should be non-issue since nobody will spend hours here.
after the visit, you can go to apollo bay harbor to see the bay at ground level.

This place is a major tourist attraction in Apollo Bay and it is easy to see why.
My wife and I drove here during our holiday in Lorne for three nights. It was one of our many stops along The Great Ocean Road.
The Spring weather was excellent during our visit. Sunny with clear skies to enjoy the scenery.

Wake up early, bring a warm jumper and picnic blanket and see the sunrise across the bay. A beautiful brisk walk up the steep hill is worth the amazing views. Great way to start the day.

We were feeling a little lazy on the day we visited. It was great to drive almost to the top of the mountain, and then just walk a short distance to enjoy the view of the area around Apollo Bay. This is really worth visiting at the beginning of your trip to Apollo Bay. You can see everything around. From this place we were able to see and decide what other places we wished to visit in Apollo Bay (e.g. the jetty and beaches).

It is a 10 minute walk (o/w much is uphill) to this lookout. It has a beautiful view of a lot of Great Ocean Road as well as to see Apollo Bay. Really nice and a must see.

Hi there,
I've never been to Australia before but I'll be doing an easy slow-paced cycling tour towards Apollo Bay from Lorne. Interested in visiting Mariners Lookout. Is it okay to cycle up or should I lock my bike somewhere before going for the climb? Anywhere else I can access by bicycle?
Written March 27, 2017
I would suggest locking it up when you get to the base but if you had a mountain bike you could easily do it

There are a few comments on the narrow, winding road up to the Mariners Lookout carpark. Is it possible to drive a 7-seater car there?
Written November 5, 2016
Yes : no problems
Enjoy
The road is an easy short drive .
The only issue is not to become distracted whilst driving & want to see view as well .
It's one of my favourite peaceful places .
Just take care as you reverse your way out of carpark : children
