Marriner's Lookout is not quite as easy to find as most of the attractions along The Great Ocean Road. There is a sign on The Great Ocean Road but it's not a large one. I did see it as I was entering Apollo Bay heading westward but I continued past as I wanted to reach the Apollo Bay Visitor's Information Centre before it closed for the day. The road leading to the lookout is just before the Big 4 Apollo Bay Pisces Holiday Park if you are heading West, or, if you are travelling towards the East, immediately after.

The lady at the Visitor's Information Centre recommended going there to view the sunset. It was 4.25pm when I arrived at the Visitor's Centre but it was the Winter Solstice so I wouldn't have long to wait for the sunset. It's only a couple of minutes drive from the Apollo Bay town proper, and when I arrived at the Marriner's Lookout car park it was only 4.49pm.

The sign indicating the Marriner's Lookout car park is clearly marked as you drive up the hill. The car park is small but not tiny. There were two other cars there when I arrived and about half a dozen motorcycles. I'd seen those motorcyclists at a few of the places I'd visited that day, we were more or less keeping pace with each other.

Marriner's Lookout is on private land. There is no entrance fee but there are no amenities either. There is a sign pointing to the walking path to the lookout. It says it's a 10 minute walk and, although I didn't time it, it felt about right. There is a gate and a sign requesting visitors to close the gate behind them.

A gravelly path leads up to the lookout area. It is a little steep in places and requires moderate fitness. A wire fence on either side lined with trees, shrubs and other plants separates the public path from the private property.

The lookout itself consists of a small, fence bound paddock at the top of a hill. The view from there is fantastic. It overlooks the sea, Apollo Bay township, the beach, the harbour, hills to the left, smaller hills to the right, The Great Ocean Road, and some pastures.

I didn't have to wait long for the sunset but it was chilly and it was then that I decided I'd wear a warmer jacket the next day. I took a few photos while I was waiting.

The sunset was pretty without being spectacular, the clouds had a faint, pink hue. If I had been there for the sunrise the next morning I would have been treated to a real spectacle, but I wasn't (I was down below where it was spectacular, anyway). Fortunately I remembered that my camera has a panorama function and I got a good panoramic picture of the sunset over the bay, and another standard frame picture. Unfortunately I forgot that my camera also has a sunset setting so I missed out on getting enhanced colours in my photos.

As I mentioned earlier, Marriner's Lookout is very close to the Apollo Bay township and, after taking my pretty sunset pictures and walking 10 minutes back down to the car park, it was still only 5.25 when I arrived at my accommodation.

Mariners lookout is easily one of the best (if not the best) lookout location along the Great Ocean Road.

It’s a bit of a hike to get to this lookout, however the view is totally worth the effort!
I wouldn’t recommend large vehicles (like a bus) to head up this road as its extremely steep and theres limited space to turn around.

Keep an eye out for snakes and check out this spot for sunrise! The view would be epic!

Steep, short track leads to a fenced and grassy viewing area.
Odd that local council hasn’t landscaped or built the area into a feature. Perhaps it’s due to the grumpy local property adjacent to car park warning off trespassers. Dare you to knock on his door asking for lookout directions ... & I’ll shout you a curried scallop pie ;)

This place is a major tourist attraction in Apollo Bay and it is easy to see why.

My wife and I drove here during our holiday in Lorne for three nights. It was one of our many stops along The Great Ocean Road.

The Spring weather was excellent during our visit. Sunny with clear skies to enjoy the scenery.

We ventured to this place early in the morning before we left town. Great spot for a view of the entire area. Good for a walk (albeit a bit steep). Would love to see a handrail or proper footing installed although our inactive group managed to make it to the stop. I'd also add a park bench or some signage / history about the area... but I guess it just adds to the charm.

Wake up early, bring a warm jumper and picnic blanket and see the sunrise across the bay. A beautiful brisk walk up the steep hill is worth the amazing views. Great way to start the day.

We were feeling a little lazy on the day we visited. It was great to drive almost to the top of the mountain, and then just walk a short distance to enjoy the view of the area around Apollo Bay. This is really worth visiting at the beginning of your trip to Apollo Bay. You can see everything around. From this place we were able to see and decide what other places we wished to visit in Apollo Bay (e.g. the jetty and beaches).

Beautiful views of Apollo Bay and the coast. Pretty easy walk to the top, where there are some sheep and alpacas. There’s a little honesty gift shop with things made out of gum nuts and gum leaves at the carpark. I bought a lovely little gumleaf bookmark for $2.

from the carpark it's a short steep hike to the top but it's definitely worth the view at the end! I also jogged this from the main road one day. Took 28mins to get to the top and 13 mins back down to the main road. Looks like a few locals like to walk up it too! It's a great hill for the fitness fanatics!
