Just 12 km north of Clare this is a fantastic place for relaxing, immersing yourself in stunning surroundings and learning about SA history without it being dull!

Bungaree is like a small village from the 1840s and the accommodation is thoughtfully presented and restored while having the comfort and convenience of the 21st century.

Close to wineries, art galleries and shops but you could be self sufficient buying the great local produce and wine at the Station store (prices reasonable). You can get a good coffee her as well.

The self guided history trail is brilliant for adults and what you’d love your kids to learn! In fact you can book to come to do the tour even if not stating.

There is a range of accommodation, all private yet on a working station. We stayed in Stallion Box, perfect for couples, near the store and pool yet with a private verandas looking into a garden and horses and ponies. Electric bbq, convection job and full size fridge. The brekkie provisions were excellent and it’s nice to be given lots of tea, coffee, butters, jams not just a couple!

The pool is fantastic and you can walk around 4km on the property. At 9am you can even feed the chickens, deer, Roos and sheep.

Overall, this is a great option for a day or 2 or a base to explore Clare and further north.

The cost was very reasonable when compared to other places we stayed at that didn’t have the history or amenities.

Returning to Clare after many years away, I looked for something a little different. The Swaggies Hut on Bungaree, 15 minutes north of the town seemed a good choice. And it was. Excellent communications, easy check in and out, stocked up fridge, a restful spot in the vicinity of the woodshed. Everything needed was there, and Clare is on the doorstep. We were lucky to strike the valley at its greenest and lushest, and the weather was perfect.
Not sure about value for money, because you can’t put a price on experiences like this. All couples - from romantic young fools to foolish old romantics - should spend a day or several at Bungaree.
Many thanks to all who make such experiences possible.

We thought this visit was fantastic. We had a terrific welcome from the operator, and later her husband. Vicky explained aspects of the property and we enjoyed using the detailed map to do a self-guided tour, taking about 2 hours on a perfect, sunny morning to do so. This is a major sheep station, and it is very interesting to go into the various buildings, stroll around the garden of the beautiful homestead, and visit the very lovely church on the property. The graveyard is very interesting also. Highly recommended.

Disgusting rude man treated us very badly today. It was such a shame because many experiences here have been genuinely positive and for lovely occasions. It tarnished it a bit snd we can’t recommend it again, unfortunately.

Highly recommend this experience. Packed with history and has been run by the same family for 170 years. Take a liesurely walk around and don’t forget the church and shearing shed areas. Well worth the small fee. Finish off with an excellent cup of coffee.

Great trip through history understanding the way that the early settlers survived. Informative speakers through the various stations which is done at your own pace

Bungaree Station was perfect stop for a group of 13 friends travelling to the Flinders Ranges, with a tour of wineries and houses in the Clare Valley. Vicki and Mark were friendly and hospitable, the accommodation was comfortable and interesting, the food was beyond our expectations. The church and other buildings on the property were fascinating. We loved it.

We stayed here last year for my 60th birthday. Booked out most of the accommodation for all the family. Absolutely fabulous weekend. Nothing was too much trouble to provide for us from open fires to fabulous food for the barbeque. I have never had a steak so nice and we still talk about it today, a year on.

We came to Bungaree Station through a Luxury Escapes package. It included two nights accommodation with breakfast and a free tour and a bottle of wine which we were able to choose.

We arrived late after 6pm so called Sal who warmly welcomed us and showed us around our accommodation. The Stallion Box is a couples only retreat and has had an ingenious addition of a very large water tank made into a bathroom, making it a lovely and spacious accommodation for two. It was warm with very efficient aircon as well as a wood fire. It had a well provisioned kitchen and lots of bacon, eggs, milk, juice, bread, jam and butter for breakfast. The only thing missing was salt and pepper!

Bungaree is a 15 minute drive from Clare town so we decided to eat in and stay at the Station rather than travelling in and out to Clare for meals. We had a lovely bbq the second night on our Verandah and sat outside for pre-dinner drinks and for our lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of the station and they have a huge range of different accommodation for all sizes and configuration of groups.
The main reception area for guests and visitors is the old Store and it has a lovely display of all things sold in the old days. Sal also provided us with a great map for our walking tour, as well as providing a lovely cappuccino for our morning tea, also included in our package.

Our last morning, we had a late checkout so decided to go feed the animals, as one does on a working farm. Sal took us to the geese and hen enclosure, then to the deer and kangaroo enclosure where we were able to hand feed, a lovely end to our visit and one children would really enjoy.

This is a beautiful historic farm station, part of South Australia’s pioneer history and is a real must to visit.
A special thank you to Sal and George for making us feel very welcome and answering all our questions.

Highly recommended 5*
