About
Established by the Jesuits in 1851, Sevenhill Cellars is the oldest winery in South Australia's Clare Valley and the only Jesuit-owned winery in Australia. Originally established to produce altar wine, Sevenhill is now recognised for its premium table wines, which express the Clare Valley's distinctive varietal characteristics. The historic winery and cellar door, St Aloysius' Church, the College building, surrounding vineyards and spiritual sites give visitors an opportunity to combine appreciation of exceptional wines with an understanding of Sevenhill's religious and historic significance. You can discover this rich heritage by following our walking trail using a self-guided map, which are available at Cellar Door.

Sevenhill Cellars is an historical and very picturesque winery that could have been set in France or perhaps part of Spain. It is well worth the visit just for the ambience. But of course there we weren’t there for the architecture.
We took part in Campfire Conversations with Will (Winemaker) and Adele (Events Manager), set amongst a small pine tree grove above the winery. Adele is a very attentive host and made sure the event ran seamlessly. Will took us through their (his) premium range of wines and I learnt more about wine in those 2hrs than in the past half century or so. No pretensions, easy to follow answers to all of our questions. How unique to be able to see which block of vines a particular bottle came from. And what wines they are.
If you want a memorable experience and an upgrade on wine knowledge it is well worth it.

On a longer stay in the Clare Valley we ranked the cellar doors we visited mostly between 3 and 5 stars. Seven hills was amongst the top five star top ranked with highlights being an atmospheric old property (vines established by the Jesuits in 1849), simply the best cellar door staff, and of course, great wines. It is possibly the easiest accessible cellar door on the Clare reisling walking/cycling trail, and there is a fascinating walking track around this property which we highly recommend. If you can't visit all of the wineries in the Clare region, make sure you don't miss this one.

We dropped in here on a crisp Friday afternoon without a booking. Friendly service even mid-Carona virus restrictions. Father Bob’s story was inspiring and the Church is worth a visit (be mindful it’s an actual Jesuit spiritual retreat). Enjoy the cost old world cellar door and reasonably priced wines from some of the oldest vines in the Valley.

Four of us went for a wine tasting at Sevenhls. We agreed to pay the price for tasting premium wines. We were absolutely rushed through the tasting with the guy giving us standard spiels at double time. No water was provided & we felt completely overwhelmed by tastes & speed in which this was delivered. Like a mass consumer outfit. Very disappointing!

So sorry to hear of your experience Cathy, certainly not our normal feedback. We have been affected by staff shortages as have many hospitality businesses in our regional area, but this is not excuse for you having a rushed experience. Our sincere apologies and I do hope you come back to visit us again some day.

Clare Valley is a two hour drive north of Adelaide. Very picturesque and well worth the drive.
The winery has extensive ground that include a church and religious college as it belongs to the Catholic Church. Lots to see. You can even wander down to the cellar area,
Winery is run independently. Wine tastings are $10 pp but fee is waved if you buy a wine. Many whites and reds on offer. We liked the Shiraz.
Highly recommend.

Thanks Alex for sharing your experience. Driving around the Clare Valley is an experience in itself, so pretty especially when the green tinges come back in or the autumn leaves. We look forward to your next visit!

We started by doing the free, self guided walking tour. This, by itself, was worth the cost of admission. The pamphlet gave just the right amount of information. It was reasonably easy to follow the route and took us about a lazy hour. We did not take the side trip to the cemetery.
After tour we did a tasting. We were asked to choose 5 wines from a list of about 12 plus 3 fortified. We shared one “flight” being concerned that Mr Plod might be lurking with his RBT.
It was fantastic. The best tasting we have ever had. The wines were brilliant. The servings sufficiently generous that we could both get the full experience. To top it off, our hostess was charming.
There is a nominal charge for the tasting but if you buy some, it is waived. The wines were so good we bought a selection of six.

Lovely to hear you had such a fabulous time. Doing the walking tour is such a nice way to get a feel of Sevenhill Cellars through our extensive history. I hope you continue to enjoy Sevenhill with the wines you have taken home with you. See you next time!

This place is amazing. It’s what I’ve come to expect of SA wineries, but with such gorgeous grounds and a stunning cathedral in the middle, this cellar-door has something extra special. Also, they host an outdoor Shakespeare performance for a couple of nights this time of year and they cater for all demographics, providing a range of gorgeous wines. I recommend both the Riesling and the Granache. I had no problem consuming large amounts of both. You’ll have an amazing time visiting this one. I’ll certainly be back again. To all the staff and especially Adele, thanks for such a beautiful evening! Another excuse for me to get out of Adelaide more regularly, or being only a 2 hour trip. Much appreciated!! Xxx

We paid a quick visit here while on a trip with some new friends (Adelaide locals) who were showing us around the Adeliade Hills. We had been told several times by our friends about the significance of Sevenhill Winery. When we arrived it was clearly evident that the winery isn't just a winery, but a special one with a church. We arrived late in the afternoon (20mins before closing time). However, the staff were great & let us view the cellars, which were amazing. We were even able to make a few purchases prior to leaving (even though we were most likley past closing time).

Great to hear about your friends sharing Sevenhill with you while you were visiting our wonderful state of SA! I am glad you had a look around downstairs as it is really special and even better to hear you were able to take some bottles home to share later. We hope to see you again one day!

Average. The spectacular grounds and property let down by the cost and service. Despite paying over $60 for a tasting platter (which you select from a fridge and make yourself) and purchasing a bottle of wine to go with it, we were still charged for our other tasting fees x 3 ($10 per tasting), girl serving us rude. Not a vibe, spend your money elsewhere.

Had a wander around this historic site. The cellar under the well set up tasting area was really interesting. The jesuits established the site in the 1850s so it is full of history. Nice area for a walk and picnic adjacent to the tasting area

Thank you for sharing, Sevenhill Cellars is an easy place to lose yourself in the surroundings and a perfect picnic spot. Next time you are here, make sure you check out our Clare Valley/ South Australian only produce section. Its so easy to create your own gourmet platter.

Hello Cheryll,
Sorry for the late response. We offer cheese platters with tastings at our cellar door but that's the only food offering we have. There isn't a restaurant at Sevenhill. I hope you found what you were looking for in the Clare Valley though.
