Finally a sunny day, plenty of bird life. A longer walk than normal because Glenraphael drive has suffered a major landslide. Nat parks have created a good path 400m further along Cliff dr. Ruined Castle descent off Narrowneck is closed also.

12km trail. The first 2km should be driven in a 4WD though we did see some 2WD's make it. The next 10kms must be walked as the trail is gated. Fabulous views from either side of the trail including a view of the Three Sisters that you dont often get. Well worth the effort. Although I regret telling everyone as it may get crowded in the future. Coach parties or day trippers are unlikely to get to this one. Popular with bird watchers, abseilers and mountain bike riders etc but still doable by the less athletic. Not a place for bushfire season because only one way in and one way out. We are going again in winter.

We decided to go on and adventure to see what this road was all about, it was an easy drive and there are some nice views along the way.
We went after very heavy rain and the road was easy to drive along.

Narrow Neck has reopened, well worth the walk/run/cycle. The road to the locked gates is a bit rough, but take your time and it is a place to soak in the view.

A 12 km road to the end of this trail. A walking only trail for 7 km leads to the top/end of the trail. Popular spot.

Amazing views of Megalong Valley - very steep and narrow roads. We had a 4WD but could do in normal car slowly....well we went slow anyway as it was pretty hairy in some spots

We were pleasantly surprised to find a few days ago that the 2km long dirt road (Glenraphael Drive) turning off from Cliff Drive to the car park next to the Golden Stairs (on Narrow Neck Plateau Trail) has been repaired. It turned from a grade 1 (very very bad) to almost a grade 10 (highway like) dirt track. Good job! This section of road is presently suitable for all types of cars, even smaller ones...until the next major rain storm.

Walking down Golden Stairs brings you to the Federal Pass walking track. Turning right on Federal Pass Track will bring you to Ruined Castle (also a popular bush camping area) and further to Mount Solitary (climbing up this mountain is hard and only for experienced bush walkers!). Turning left on the bottom of Golden Stair leads to Scenic World (via "Landslide") and further to Furber Steps (closed until June 30, 2019) or Giant Stairways...or even further to Leura Falls area.

Narrow neck is just that -- a narrow neck of rock that sticks out between two valleys far below. Spectacular views on both sides, and on 3 sides at the end. DO NOT visit during high fire danger periods or total fire bans.

Not sure if I am the best person to rate this trail as this is the only mountain bike ride I have done in the Blue Mountains, so I have nothing to compare it to.
There are plenty of good web sites giving detailed descriptions of the trail.

We are 47 & 52 years old, and only dust off our mountain bikes 2 or 3 times a year.
We opted to go at a leisurely pace and enjoyed the trip, many great views, and we were quite surprised by the amount of birds we encountered.

The trail is 20 Klm long consisting of some very steep hills. One of the bike web sites I viewed beforehand said in their description “unless you are Lance Armstrong be prepared to push your bike up and possibly down the steeper sections” I found this to be an accurate statement.

We opted to start out ride from our hotel near Katoomba Train Station so this added about an extra 12 Klm to our trip. In total we took about 4 hours. This included, stops for photos & taking in the views, bird watching, lunch and pushing bikes on the steeper sections. If you are a bit younger and fitter you could easily do this in under 3 hours.

I would reccommend, but it is not a trip for a beginner.
Also a good walking track, but I would not attempt to walk it in summer.
