About
Known as the "cook's market", Dandenong Market is a 150-year old traditional working market in Melbourne's South East. A mecca for fresh produce and hard-to-find ingredients, Dandenong Market attracts over 5 million visitors a year who seek out authentic, fresh produce. With over 200 market traders spread out over 8000 square metres, Dandenong Market offers everything from honeycomb fresh from the beehive, to flowers cut straight from the farm, to apples picked from the orchard. A busy and bustling market full of sights and delights, Dandenong Market offers a taste for every season and a treasure in every stall.

A huge market in the heart of Dandenong, my school held a day trip excursion here, we got to experience all the amazing food and explore 'The Bazaar' where over 300 stalls sell just about anything and everything. The market overall is a super multicultural space and would definitely recommend this as a day trip to anyone, whether they live in Melbourne or are new to the area. Not to mention, the market offers all of your fresh produce, meat, dairy, and bread for a fraction of the price that it's sold for at big-name supermarkets.

My last visit to this market was six years ago. This time round, the market remained largely unchanged and yet some what different.
Food court sections still house good coffee and plenty of affordable fares. A few new stalls to their addition brought about more mix to the potpourri of aroma gastronomy flavours.
The Vietnamese stall in the smaller north food court still serves the best pho and banh mi one can get for that price around town. There are two Viet stalls across from each other and my palate prefers the stall closer to the fresh producers, further from the enclosed poultry and seafood section. Most of the Vietnamese listing on their menu does not disappoint. Be prepared to wait though, their business is good, but they work very swiftly and are friendly. Their pho is my preference over the few in Boxhill and Mekong in city. For the price of $10, the soup was delightful and their noodles fresh. Might have to remind them if you prefer your beef undercooked.
Fresh produces section remained just as I recalled from six years ago. There's life and creativity abound with all the colourful freshness around me.
Poultry and seafood section seems quieter during my recent visit with most of the surrounding shops closed or not in operation. The variety of sausages here had reduced but with the supermarkets offering more gourmet sausages on their shelves, demands would have shifted elsewhere too.
Lastly, the marketplace section still offers some good souvenir options to consider.
Most items are priced more reasonably compared to malls and city shops.
The handmade Australian soaps were certainly a good buy for me. I've been into many other shops during my travel and saw the prices of the same soap with vast markups. So yeah, if you are into soaps, get more from here.
Much has changed in six years and yet there are still lots of good moments to reminisce for this tourist in me.
This place is no Queen V. Dandenong market is a suburb market with a colourfully delightful soul.

Such a shame I don’t like near a market like this. My friend lives down the road and she swears by it. Prices are so much lower than the leading supermarkets and the produce was much fresher and has lasted longer.

Good retailers. But the customer service by the Dandenong Market Management is abysmal. Their website quotes prices incorrectly and they do not honour these prices. Their updating of website is sloppy and they do not value their customers. Their communication is aloof and they do not value their loyal customer needs. As a frequently shopper of markets and a welfare worker I cannot not recommend this market All care no responsibility.

Abundant selection of fruit and vegetables at great prices. Meat, fish, bread, spices all available under one roof. Make sure you have cash as most places have a $10 Eftpos minimum and bring some spare coins to pay for car parking too. Look forward to returning.

This was the first time we had visited this particular market for many years. With my nearest and dearest being in a wheelchair, we hoped to find a spare disabled parking space. No such luck. As with many other car parks, they simply do not have enough disabled parking spaces. We had no other choice than to park in a parking space with no other vehicles close-by and for me to do the best I could with the wheelchair.
Once inside the market, we found that some of it was too awkward to push a wheelchair around. Especially the seafood and meat sections. They were not on one level, making it too difficult to see everything. This market is simply not designed for easy disabled access, especially on a busy Friday.

the Dandenong market was pretty big. once inside it didn't have much variety. the shops all sold the same cheap, fake clothes and the food was pretty average too. it was overpriced and perfect if you wanted to waste some money.
if you are after some fresh veggies this is the place to go. they have a massive variety and many produce stalls to choose from. this the only good thing about this market.

On the 24th of May, I went on a school excursion to the Dandenong Market for a Cultural task. The Market was a wonderful place to experience the different types of clothes, food, cultures and people. The food was amazing, especially the Dandy Donuts. There was a variety of things to look at which made it easy to chose what you wanted to buy. Overall, I had a great time looking around the Market and talking to different people.

If your on a budget and want fresh vegetables, this is the place in Dandenong. Fish, meat, cheese, spices, flowers and bread shops. Great for lunch with family and friends. Very loud and colourful lots of fun atmosphere. Sometimes there is buskers. You can wanders the isles for cheap toys, clothes, music and party supplies. You think of it, they probably have it cheap.
